After Jon Corzine suffered serious injuries in a car accident on April 12, many of the reports focused on his
failure to wear a seat belt. It's reported that seatbelt use has gone up by 10 percent since 2000, hitting a record
81 percent nationwide in 2006. And the agency reports that safety belts saved about 15,434 lives in 2004. But
for some groups, particularly teens and young adults, usage still lags. Sixty-two percent of the 5,135 young
people ages 16 to 20 killed when riding in passenger vehicles (交通工具) in 2004 were not wearing safety belts.
So if you're the parent of a teen, remind them to fasten up every time they get into a car. Yes, even it's just for
a short ride and even if they're in the back seat. And for kids under 13, be sure to follow these safety guidelines
(准则).
     ● Children from birth until age 1 or under 20 pounds should ride in the back seat in a rear-facing (向后)
child safety seat.
     ● Children over 1 year old and weighing more than 20 pounds can ride in a forward-facing child safety seat
in the back seat.
     ● All children who have outgrown child safety seats should be properly put in booster seats (幼儿加高座位)
until they are at least 8 years old or 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
     ● Once children outgrow their booster seats, they can use an adult seat belt in the back seat as long as it fits
properly.
     ● New rules require manufacturers(制造商 )to start using"smart" air bags for all 2007 cars. The new air
bags are constructed so that they don't injure smaller passengers in the front seat.
1. In 2000 about ______ percent people use seat belts nationwide.
A. 10
B. 71
C. 81
D. 91
2. The underlined word "lags" in Paragraph 1 means ___.
A. develops slowly
B. moves very quickly
C. holds still
D. slows down
3. According to the safety guidelines, we can learn that ______.
A. children can never use an adult seat belt in the back seat
B. when the children are in the back seat of the car, they needn't wear a seat belt
C. a 2-year-old child can ride in a forward-facing child safety seat in the back seat
D. the smaller passengers in the cars with new air bags won't have danger
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Jon Corzine was putting the seat belt on when the accident happened.
B. You don't have to wear a seat belt when you are just going for a short ride.
C. 62% of the young people were killed when riding in passenger vehicles in 2004.
D. Teens and young adults should always remember to wear seat belts.

Dorothea Shaw is 71 years old and nearly blind, and she chose to live alone far away from people. She lives in Belize — a county the size of Wales with a population only that of Swansea. Her home is at Gales Point, a tiny village which can be reached only by sea or air; after a 10-mile walk into the hills one finally reaches a piece of land and two small houses so hidden in the thick over-grown forest that only a handful of people know Dorothea is there.
She lives happily and totally alone – growing her vegetables, looking after her trees and dogs, cats and chickens. Once a month or so an old friend passes by with her food supplies and letters-usually including a letter from her sister in Scunthorpe and some bits of clothing from friends in Canada. Sometimes a local man will come and cut wood for her and a group of British soldiers will come across her and be greeted with the offer of a cup of coffee.
At night she lies in her tiny sleeping room with the dogs on the floor, the cats on the table near the typewriter and one of the hens settled down in a corner of the bookshelf, and listens for hours to any Spanish, English, German or French broadcasts she can find on her radio. Sometimes she gets lonely but most of the time the animals and the radio are company enough.
But recently the very things that she had tried to get free from so well have begun to catch up with her. The peace of the forest has been destroyed by the noise of earth-moving machines not many miles away. What she once only heard of distantly on the radio is now on her doorstep. Things began to change three years ago. The new main north-south road in Belize was cut through the forest only four or five miles away. “Now more people know I’m here.” She says. “I feel more and more uneasy each day.”

Nowadays, it is possible to travel to distant parts of the globe in several hours. This can result in the traveler ending up in a part of the world where time is different from his or her own “body clock” ,which control our sleep patterns.

If we travel east or west by more than four time zones (hours) then we will usually be affected.

In the past when people traveled by sea, there was enough time for the body to adjust to the local time, but with the advent of modern high speed aircraft the body does not have time to adjust. Therefore, there is the term “jet lag(时差反应)”. It normally takes one day per time zone (hour) for the body to adjust to its new surroundings.

The effects of jet lag are usually tiredness and insomnia (失眠) but can also include: poor concentration, nausea (恶心) ,vomiting (呕吐), constipation (便秘) and general malaise (不舒服). The effects are made worse by alcohol.

Sleeping while flying may help to reduce the symptoms (症状) of jet lag, but long periods of immobility aboard aircraft can make the traveler feel numb(麻木的) in the legs. The following are some other tips of reducing the symptoms of jet lag:

①Avoid traveling when you are already tired and rest before departure.

②Stopovers on long flights may be helpful.

③A relaxed flight is important.

④Sleeping tablets will help you to sleep and be correspondingly alert (相对警惕的) during the next day, but they do not speed up adjustment to the new time zone.

⑤Remember the actual traveling time will usually be at least twice the actual time spent in the air since it will include traveling to and from and hanging around in airports.

⑥Avoid heavy commitments on the first day after arrival.

72. The following are the effects of jet lag EXCEPT _____.

        A. tiredness          B. coughing           C. insomnia           D. vomiting

73. The word “immobility” in the fifth paragraph means “_____”.

        A. stillness           B. movement         C. activity             D. happiness

74. We can reduce the symptoms of jet lag by _____.

        A. drinking some alcohol           B. keeping ourselves awake

        C. taking some medicine            D. sleeping while flying

75. What is the main purpose of the passage?

        A. To suggest people travel by sea instead of by air.

B. To tell people the effects of jet lag.

        C. To give people some advice about reducing the symptoms of jet lag.

        D. To tell people about their body clock.

For hundreds of years, Japan has been hit, from time to time, by tsunamis(海啸), which are caused by earthquakes or underwater volcanoes. The story of the boy Yuuki is the story of such a disaster.
Yuuki lived with his family in a seaside village, below a small mountain. One day, as he played on top of the mountain, Yuuki felt a small earthquake but it was not strong enough to frighten anybody. Soon after, however, Yuuki noticed the sea darken and begin running away from the shore very fast, leaving behind wide areas of beach that had never been seen before.
Yuuki remembered reading that just before a terrible tsunami, the sea suddenly and quickly rolls backward. He ran to the beach, warning the villagers who had gathered to admire the new beach land.
But no one listened. They laughed at him and continued playing in the new sand.
Desperate, Yuuki could think of only one thing to do. He lit a tree branch, raced to the rice fields and began burning the harvested rice. Then he called out, “Fire! Fire! Everyone run to the mountain! Now!”
When everyone reached the mountain top, a villager cried out, “Yuuki is mad! I saw him set the fire.” Yuuki hung his head in shame, but said nothing as the villagers screamed at him.
Just then, someone shouted, “Look!”
In the distance a huge dark wave of water was speeding towards the shore. When it hit the shore, it destroyed everything.
On the mountain everyone stared at the village ruins in terror.
“I'm sorry I burned the fields,” said Yuuki, his voice trembling.
