Scientists tell us so much about the moon, it is quite easy to tell what it is like. It’s certainly not a friendly place. As there is no air or water, there can be no life of any kind. Mile after mile there are only plains(平原) of dust with mountains around them above, the sun and the stars shine in the sky. If you step out of the mountains’ shadows(影子) it will mean moving from terrible cold into great heat. The moon is also a very silent world, for sound waves can only travel through air. But from the moon, you can see a friendly sight. Our earth is shining more brightly than the other stars. It looks like a very large ball, coloured blue and green and brown.

Traveling to the planets will be man's next step. It will be more difficult than traveling to the moon and
certainly more exciting.
In 1997, an American spaceship reached Mars, the second nearest planet from the earth. A wonderful robot slowly walked on the planet and worked hard. It sent a lot of information back to the earth. The
most exciting piece was that there used to be a lot of water on Mars. The American scientists asked, "Is
there any life on Mars?" Unluckily, no life was found there, but American scientists do not lose heart.
Russian spaceships have found that it is so hot on Venus that there must be no life there.
Spaceship of the future will be bigger and 'faster. They will be able to carry people for travels to the
moon or other planets.
Man may in the future find planets l ike the earth and make them home. But there is still a long, long
way to go. Man should learn to know that the earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and take good care of it.

If you go out sometimes at night, you'll see the moon high up in the sky. The moon is far away from the earth.
But it is our nearest neighbour in space. In 1969 two Americans visited it by spaceship. It was one of the most exciting moments of that year.
The sky looks black from the moon and you'll see the earth up in the sky. You will also see many, many stars.
You can't find any living things there. It's too hot in the day and too cold at night. And there's no air or water there. Nothing can live on it.
It is difficult for men to walk on the moon. Everything becomes much lighter. You can jump much higher on the moon than on the earth. If you throw a ball, it would fly very far. It's very interesting to walk on the moon!

Now people know quite a lot about the moon. There is no air or water on the moon, so there are not any trees or animals, or people on the moon. The moon gets its light from the sun, but some places on the moon are quite dark. The days on the moon get hotter than boiling(沸腾的) water. The nights get colder than the North Pole(北极) on the earth. The things are getting much lighter on the moon than on the earth. And you can jump higher on the moon than on the earth.
