This was not going to be a Mother’s Day as before. A lot of things had changed in the last few months. Usually we would give Mom flowers and take her out for a big meal. We couldn’t afford it this year.
Since I was born, Mom had been able to stay at home with me. We always had enough money to go out to eat two or three times a week if I had behaved well.
All that changed in January.
I could tell that Dad was getting a little angry. Mom would tell me to be quiet and let him rest at night. He’d work later and later.
Beginning in February, Dad tried hard to find another job. But it wasn’t easy for him to find something at the level he used to. He could not bring in as much money. That’s when he asked my mom to go back to work.
After a couple of weeks, Mom found a full-time job at a bank. The pay would be a big help to the family, but now Mom would not be around as much. I didn’t like it. I now had to stay in the after-school care program instead of going home and playing in my neighborhood. Too bad was, as soon as I did get home, I had to help get dinner ready, because Mom wouldn’t get home until after 6:00. I really missed the past time.
a) This was not going to be a Mother’s Day as before because the writer’s father wasn’t in
b) The writer’s home used to be rich.
c) His family changed because his father was mad.
d) In February, the writer’s mother started to work at a bank.

I hate being overweight. My husband said he didn’t mind, but I knew he still hoped I had a beautiful body. Everything from my waist(腰部) to my legs was overweight. Finally, just after Christmas last year, I decided that some
thing had to be done.
I met Dr. Wallace, and she told me I had to stop eating fast foods. It was very hard for me because I was eating them three of four times a week:pizza, hamburgers, whatever I could get. But I said to myself at the start that I would try my best to do it—and I did. I even gave up the booze—something I used to have two glasses of it with dinner.
My best friend, Rachel Waterman, said I had to walk 10,000 steps every day. That was very hard for me at the beginning. I was used to driving everywhere, but I started to walk everywhere instead. I walked in the morning before work, and I usually took a walk in the park with my husband after work. Now I never go to bed until I’ve done my 10,000 steps.
Six months has passed, and I made it. Last week, my husband bought me an MP4 as a gift. the weight is wonderful—I feel like a different person now, and I can buy my favorite clothes in the shops. I am so proud of myself because everyone thought I wouldn’
t be able to make it including myself.
I love my new body, and I’ll never let myself go back into my old ways.

查看习题详情和答案>>Most children don’t enjoy doing housework. They like playing computer games instead of cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has good and right ways to get their children to do housework. Here is an example.
“Mom,have you worked out next week’s housework? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun.” When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others, Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the week day task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card“clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up“wash vegetables” and Robert chose“feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
To help the children do housework, their mother thought hard and came up with this idea. Of course, the parents did the housework on weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.
