　　Look at your watch for just one minute. During that time in 1981, 239 babies were born in the world. Perhaps you think that isn’t much. 　　The population problem may be the greatest one of the world today. Two thousand years ago, there were only 250 million people on the earth. Four hundred years ago, the number was over 500 million. The population may be 8,000 million by the year 2000.

　　In China, the population problem is quite great, too. The Party’s leaders are paying much attention to it, but lots of people don’t think so. They like to do what they want. Some love more children. Some wish to have both son and daughter. Other would like to have not only daughters but also sons. Haven’t they ever thought the population problem? Perhaps　the　only　test　score　that　I　remember　is　the　55　when　I　was　in　high　school.

    I　walked　home　alone　that　day　with　the　low　but　high　score.　My　father　knew　that　I　had　a　big　test　that　day　and　asked　me　as　soon　as　I　got　home,　“How　did　you　do　in　your　test？”“I　made　a　55,”I　said.
