Instroduction to Letters to Sam
Dear Reader,
Please allow me to tell you something before you read this book. When my1 ,Sam, was born, my heart was filled with joy. I had been sitting in a wheelchair for 20 years before then, and I have been2ill many times. So I wonderfuled if would have the3to tell Sam what I had4.
For years I have been hosting a program on the5and writing articles for a magazine.Being6to move freely,I have learned to sit still and keep my heart7, exchanging thoughts with thousands of listeners and8. So when Sam was born ,I 9to tell him about school and friendship,Romance and work,Love and everything else. That’s how I started to write these10. I hoped that Sam would11them sooner or later.
However, that expedition12when Sam showed signs of autism(自闭症)at the age of two.He had actually stopped talking before the discovery of the signs.He13to communicate with others, even the family members. That was 14for me but didn’t stop me writing on.I realized that I had even 15now to tell him.I wanted him to16what it means to be “different ”from others, and learn how to fight against the misfortune he’11 17as I myself, his grandfather, did. I just18 if I could write all that I wanted to say in the rest of my life.
Now,19the book has been published,I have been given the chance.Every chapter in the book is a letter to Sam:some about my life, and all about what it means to be a 20.

It was the last day of the final examination in a large eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of students were talking about the exam that was going to begin in a few1.On their faces was confidence(信心).This was their 2exam—then they would graduate and begin to work.
Some talked of jobs they already had, others talked of jobs they 3get. With the certainty of four years of college, they felt4and able to take control(控制)of the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be a(n) 5task, as the professor had said they could bring6books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not7each other during the test.
8they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles9on the students’ faces as they found there were only five questions.
Three hours had passed10the professor began to collect papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor faced the class.
He looked at the11faces before him, and then asked: “How many completed all five questions?” 12
“How many answered four?” Still no hand.
“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished13.” But the class remained silent.
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I 14,” he said. “I just want you to know that, although you have completed four years of study, there are15many things about the 16you don’t know. These questions you could not answer are relatively common(普遍)in everyday17.” Then, smiling, he added, “You will all18this course, but remember—even though you are now college graduates, your education had just19.”
The years have weakened the name of the professor, but not the 20he taught.

“They’re all spy books. We were just surprised and5that he has returned the books, 6after so many years,” Mrs. Young said.
The books were7on June 18, 1985 and would have to be paid almost $5,800 in overdue
8. But, because of the sweet letter and $50 note, Mrs. Young said all was9.
She said, “We thank him for returning the books and hope his conscience(良心)is 10. I’d like to think he can come back into the library one day to borrow more material11he returns it.”
To whom it may concern,
About 20 years ago I12to return the three books to your library. In fact I13them.During that time, one of the books was damaged by my dog. I have enclosed all three books and a sum of money that will go some way toward 14the damaged book.
My 15were unforgivable; a thief is a thief. Please 16my apology for stealing the books and for not having the courage to return them17.
I want you to know that for the last few years this theft has18my conscience and I am sorry I was so selfish to steal them in the first19. I hope this goes some small way to20my actions.

The Arhat Who Bares His Heart (开心罗汉)
Here is a story about one of the 18 arhats (阿罗汉) in the Buddhist temple.
Shubo Jia (戌博迦) was a crown prince. He did not really want to become the 1 of his small state. Instead, he wanted to leave the world of red dust and follow the Buddha and find enlightenment. But he 2 he had responsibilities to his kingdom.
His younger brother, however, wanted very much to become king, and was 3 to mount (发动) an armed rebellion against Shubo Jia in order to claim the throne.
And so, to calm his brother and to prevent a war, and above all to pursue the path he had decided he must follow to find enlightenment, he called his 4 to him, and explained that there was no desire in his heart 5 the land. All that was in his 6 was the Buddha nature.
His brother did not believe any of this, for, in his mind, whatever the Buddha nature might be, it could not 7 with the joy of running a kingdom, even a small kingdom and having everyone obey one’s every command. And so his brother suspected that Shubo Jia was 8 trying to fool him with some unworthy ruse.
SHubo Jia protested that he was completely 9. And with that, he pulled 10 his gown, and the face of a Buddha was seen peering out from the middle of his chest, for indeed in his heart there was only the Buddha nature.
So that is how he is represented in art today. And it is why he is called “The Arhat Who Bares His Heart.”

Thomas Edison tried two thousand different materials to make the light bulb. When none worked successfully, his assistant 1, “All our work is in vain. We have learned nothing.”
Thomas Edison replied very 2, “Oh, we have come a long way and we have 3 a lot. We now know that there are two thousand materials which we cannot 4 to make a good light bulb.”
If you learn from your mistakes, then you are 5. If you learn from someone else’s mistakes, then you are a genius. Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines 6 daily and failure is nothing more than a few small 7 repeated daily.
How 8 the above lines are! Success takes 9. We’11 make mistakes 10 we do things in too much of a hurry. When we do not practice disciplines in life, we don’t build enough confidence to 11 new and challenging tasks which are important and matter in life. Our confidence 12 what we think of ourselves and whether we believe in ourselves. We are all born with exceptional 13, but only a few really 14 their true potentials and make efforts in life and the others just lead a(n) 15 life. Do you want to be exceptional?
Success is a fruit which everyone wants to 16, but it is not found everywhere and no one can 17 it without serious efforts.
Those who want to succeed will find a way; those who don’t will find a(n) 18!
Success depends on previous 19, and without it we will end in failure.
When you are 20, please enjoy it and give your hand to others who want to accomplish something.

It was an afternoon in the winter. Some friends and I were talking at a restaurant. We talked and talked and soon swimming became the 1. Suddenly I hit upon an idea. “Wouldn’t it be 2 if we went swimming? Others went swimming in winter, and 3 couldn’t we? Besides, we could be 4 if we did. ” I told them about this and they all said it was a good idea indeed.
Early in the morning, three days 5, we four were standing at the bus stop, with bags in our hands, 6 for a bus to take us to the 7. The sky was clear, the sun was shining, but all the same, it was very cold, 8 our heavy overcoats were not enough to keep us 9. We all felt that we should go back, but no one wanted to 10.
We soon reached the sands. There was nobody there, but we were not to be discouraged. 11 we were proud that we were the 12 ones that dared to challenge the weather. Besides, the sun could keep us warm. So we 13 ourselves quickly.
But things were not going to be so nice as we thought. The sea wind was blowing, we felt 14 cold and we shook from head to feet. At last we decided to 15 the sea water. We put our feet in first, only to take them back16. The water was unbelievably cold. 17 I suggested that we should all jump in at the same time. We all went back ten steps. I gave the order and we all rushed forward. We jumped. That feeling I had when I was in the water I shall never 18. I was up and rushed again to the seaside. So 19 my friends. We put on our clothes as quickly as possible and went home.
We four did not go to school the next three days, for we all 20 a bad cold. We missed the lessons, but we had this unforgettable experience.

Although in 1947 we were still very new to the atomic age, we knew about mushroom clouds. A huge crack (裂缝) spread across the library wall upstairs, sending teachers and 1 screaming down the hall.
Had a new world war started? Palefaced, our young science teacher quickly2us for a fire drill. We huddled (卷缩) in little groups on the beach side of the school grounds and3the spreading cloud darken the bright spring sky.
Rumors flew every which way,4two hours would pass before we got the full story. One rumor we heard was that the Texas City Monsanto Chemical plant had5; children whose parents6there began to cry.
I7—that was where my father was working that day.
The school bell called us back inside, and we were dismissed (解散) to8our way home the best way we could. I'd walked a quarter of the threemile trip to my home9a car horn frightened me to10. My Uncle Barney11alongside me in his old Ford. The instant I saw him, I knew my father12. Otherwise, Papa would have13for me himself.
As if in slow motion from a great distance, Uncle Barney motioned for me to14. Numb with grief, I crawled into the back15. I barely took notice of the man sitting there, and didn't recognize him until he16me. When Papa put his strong arms around me, I forgot for a moment that Cherokees aren't supposed to17.
Many of my fellow students lost their18in the explosion. Tragedy would one day come to our19, as it inevitably (不可避免地) comes to all, but one day Texas City blew up, it miraculously (奇迹般地) passed us by. Because he lost his keys on that April morning, as he explained, my father lived for2032 years—we were to have a second lifetime forever.
