Long long ago, there was a small village. This village had a
1
tradition. At the beginning of every year, any boy who had reached the age of majority (成年) was given land and money to build a home. The boy had to
2
his home before winter. If his home failed to endure the cold weather in winter, the villagers could not
3
him in any way.
One
4
, Paul and Marc reached their majority. They
5
their land and money and decided to search nearby villages for ideas on building their homes. In each village, they found the nicest
6
and talked to the owners. Each owner gladly offered
7
.
After Marc saw several homes, he
8
the best ideas and went back to his own land. Paul,
9
, continued collecting more ideas. Soon he had so many great ideas that he began to
10
some of them. But he always believed he could find even better ideas in the next village.
Marc began building his home. He had several false starts,
11
his home gradually rose from his land. By fall, Marc had finished his home. It wasn't perfect, but it was strong and he could
12
it later. Paul enjoyed all the beautiful homes and
13
with home owners. The first snow came and Paul, realizing he was running out of time,
14
back to his land. He built the best home he could in the time he had, but it was
15
.The first winter storm destroyed his home and he froze to
16
.The villagers mourned for him.
Marc
17
the winter. Each year, Marc searched for other good ideas he could use to make his own home look better. He became a leader in the village,
18
a family, and lived a happy, content life.
We all build and improve our own mental homes. It’s
19
and fun for us to search for ideas from other mental home owners, but we only improve our own mental home if we actually
20
the best ideas.

Last night I wrote an article for the school newspaper that described how I feel right now in honest terms. I emailed it to our wonderful
1
, and after she
2
it, she asked a very good question: "Do you want the
3
school body, including our senior class and the teaching
4
to read this?"
That question pretty much
5
my thoughts. I'm not a very
6
person; I tend to let only a few friends know
7
what' s going on in my life. I suppose that's
8
my personality says the opposite to itself, because I'm also an honest person.
Being honest is
9
.It involves taking risks—huge risks—and putting
10
on the edge.
11
to someone can be the hardest thing for you in the world and either lead to the hurt of feelings or
12
friendships. During the course of my life, I' ve experienced

In positive ways, being honest can be a

.Pretending is not only difficult,
15
it' s very tiring. Last year,

I discovered that I could be open with two people whom I was already good friends with, the load on my shoulders felt much
17
.Telling someone your

feelings is scary; trusting someone
19
your heart and soul is hard. Of course, putting one's feelings into
20
for the general population to read is also rather frightening.

One Monday morning, the class were excited about the rumor(流言)that the science room was on fire over the weekend.Mr. Johnson, my fifth grade teacher
1
it and explained that science class would be cancelled
2
the fire. He also
3
us not to go near the room because it could be dangerous.
During the morning break, Kim and I

the science room.We stood on tiptoes(脚尖)looking hard through the door window, trying to see what was like inside
6
suddenly a firm hold on our shoulders stopped us.
"Where do you belong? Certainly not here!"
I turned around to find a teacher staring
7
at us, shouting. In those frozen seconds millions of
8
flashed through my mind.My father would kill me for disobeying teachers.Worse than that, my mother might be so mad that she might not
9
him.My heart
10
even lower when I thought of how angry Mr.Johnson would be.Soon the teacher led Kim and me back to the classroom, leaving us
11
before Mr.Johnson.
But to our
12
, there was no yelling and no anger from Mr.Johnson.
13
, he bent slowly to look me in the eye.I was met with a look of
14
rather than anger. He spoke softly and carefully as he explained why he was
15
in my decision to go where I might have got

.As I looked into the eyes of the man who could send me to unimagined

at home, tears welled up in my eyes. The thought of disappointing Mr.Johnson
18
me while I felt a gentle touch of Mr.Johnson's hand on my shoulder.I glanced up and he smiled. My

for Mr.Johnson grew greatly the moment I discovered that he still liked me even after I'd disappointed him.I could see that he cared more about my

than the fact that I'd broken a rule.It was the first time I felt the power of forgiveness.

A successful business man was growing old and wanted to choose a successor to take over the business. He called all the young executives together and said, "I have to
1
and choose the next CEO from you."
They were
2
, but the boss continued. "I am going to give you a very
3
seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back one year from today with
4
you have grown from the seed. I will then
5
the plants, and choose the next CEO."
Jim went home
6
. Everyday, he would water the seed and see
7
it had grown. Although he kept
8
his seed, nothing ever grew. Many weeks went
9
, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a
10
.
A year later, they brought their plants to the CEO for
11
. When Jim arrived, he was
12
at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful.
The CEO greeted them. "What great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be
13
the next CEO!"
All of a sudden, the CEO
14
Jim at the back with his empty pot. The CEO asked him what had happened - Jim told him the story. He looked at Jim, and then
15
, "The next CEO is Jim!"
Jim couldn't believe
16
. Jim couldn't even grow his seed. "How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.
Then the CEO said, "The seeds I gave you were boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not
17
for them to grow. Jim was the only one with the courage and
18
to bring me a pot with my seed in it.
19
, he is the one who will be the new CEO!"
If you plant honesty, you will reap
20
. So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.

Secondhand smoke clearly kills people and the only way to control it is to ban smoking in all workplaces, US Surgeon-General Dr Richard Carmona said.
In 1964Surgeon General’s report first laid out the
1
of smoking. Years later, in another report Dr Richard Carmona
2
the effects of secondhand smoke and said no one should be forced to inhale it.
“Secondhand smoke causes early death and disease in children and in
3
who do not smoke,” the report reads. “Children
4
to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome(综合症), acute respiratory(呼吸道) infections, and ear problems,” it adds.
Smoking by
5
causes respiratory symptoms and slows lung growth in their children. A 2005 report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that
6
26 died every year in the United States from sudden infant death syndrome-all
7
by secondhand smoke.
States,
8
and other local authorities have battled over instituting(制定)smoking bans. Some
9
, especially bars and restaurants, have said they will lose business if smoking is completely banned. But the report said it is impossible to protect non-smokers even with designated smoking areas, and at least one report from California, which has strict bans, has shown no

on businesses.

Around 5:30 p.m., I was on the bus one day and everybody on the bus was quiet. People had just
1
from work, students had just finished their

class and everybody was a little
3
from a long day. It wasn't a particularly good day for me as I was feeling quite tired too. I was just looking outside of the

I had seen many times before, people hurrying home.
In front of me, there was a man sitting in the seat who didn't look too clean.
6
he was looking out of the window, the man suddenly

have everyday. In my daily life, many things had

their color and movement. But he

The moment I knew my mother had incurable lung cancer, I realized for the first time that time will one day run out for us all.
I have determined to be with my mother as much as I possibly can. This is not out of a sense of
1
, but because I really want to be near her. But making the time to
2
with my mother has been my greatest
3
. I have a husband, a four-year-old son and a home to nm. I also hold down a(n)
4
job as a radio announcer at the BBC.
I arrived at work one day to be told we would be doing a radio series exploring “time poverty”. I’ve
5
been taken with the idea that we are time-poor. How can I - who have so many labor-saving machines and an only child – have
6
time than my mother who had six children and no
7
?
I put this
8
a professor. He pointed out that it is because I try to keep my home much cleaner than my mother did. I admit I like to
9
to my friends. My husband says
10
that I remove all traces (痕迹) of human life
11
anyone arrives.
The professor said
12
has become the new religion. We expect work to provide us with a sense of identity and a means to secure our future. And because we
13
so much time in our working lives, we like to reward ourselves with material things. Frequently, we spend our money before it’s earned.
14
is an annoying worry, keeping us
15
to the work treadmill (跑步机).
The same professor suggested we
16
a Buddhist concept -- to enjoy each moment and activity for its own sake,
17
try to do lots of things at once. Since then I have been
18
the art of “living in the moment” whenever I get the chance. I have cleared my schedule of nonessential tasks,
19
house and garden plans, and turned down some extra work.
It is my mother’s illness, a once-in-a-lifetime event, that sets me
20
on the fact that we forget that time is a limited resource.

Mr. West wanted to buy his wife a Christmas present, but he was always very
1
, so he was never able to find time to go to the shops. At last, when it was the week
2
Christmas, and the shops were very crowded, he decided that he could not
3
any longer. He worked in an office, and usually
4
lunch in a restaurant, but one day he bought some sandwiches, ate
5
quickly and went out to a big shop near his
6
during his lunch hour.
The shop was full of women, who were also buying
7
during their lunch hour. Mr. West stood
8
at the edge of a crowd of
9
who were pushing forward to try to get to the people who were
10
necklaces and earrings. He tried to move forwards slowly, taking his turn with the others, but more and more women were
11
into the shop the whole time and pushing selfishly (自私地)
12
him. After half an hour, he was just as
13
from the people who were selling the necklaces as he had been when he came in, and his lunch hour was coming to
14
, so he decided to change his
15
of doing things: he put his head down, gave a sudden loud shout and started to
16
his way towards the
17
of the crowd as hard as he could.
The women around him became very
18
when they saw what he was doing, and began to scold (责备) him. “Why can’t you behave (做事) like a
19
?”, they shouted.
“Ladies,” he answered them, “I have been behaving like a gentleman for the past half hour, and it has got me
20
, so now I am starting to behave like a lady!”
