Have you ever seen a movie in which a building was burnt down or a bridge was destroyed? Have you seen films in which a train crashed or a ship
1
into the ocean? If so, you may have wondered how these things could happen without
2
the people in the film.
The man who knows the
3
is the “special-effects” man. He has one of the most important jobs in the film
4
. He may be
5
to create a flood or to make a battlefield explode. But he may also be told to create a
6
effect which is much less exciting, though just as important to the success of the film. In a
7
for one movie there was a big glass bowl
8
with water in which small fish
9
swimming. The director of the movie
10
the fish to stop swimming suddenly
11
they seemed to stare at(盯着) an actor. Then the director wanted the fish to stop staring and swim away. But fish suddenly
12
be ordered to do anything. It was quite a
13
.
The special-effects man
14
about this problem for a long time. The result was an idea for
15
the fish with a harmless use of electricity.
16
he applied electricity to the fish bowl causing the fish to be totally still(静止的). Then he rapidly reduced the
17
of electricity allowing the fish to be free.
18
he got the humorous effect the director wanted.
19
in other parts of movie making there are those who have developed
20
skill in creating certain kinds of effects. Jim White, who has been a special-effects man for thirty-two years, is best known for work with ships and airplanes.

On a cold winter day, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the author of The Success Principles, who was going to deliver a speech on his new book.
During his talk, Jack
1
his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, ‘‘Who wants this?”
2
shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would
3
. But I jumped up, ran up the
4
to the stage, and grabbed the bill. As I was launching myself in the air,
5
raced through my mind — was I about to be humiliated(羞辱) in front of 800 people? Would they
6
security guards and take me from the stage?
7
my desire for bold (大胆的)action was louder than any
8
voice. As I got the bill from his hand, he said, “That’s it! We can’t wait for the
9
to come to us. We must take
10
to create what we want!’’
After his talk, I
11
to formally meet Jack and boldly asked for his personal e-mail address. Over the next months, I sent him emails
12
my points of view and dreams with him. He kindly e-mailed back lots of encouragement. But my life got busy
13
other things. I stopped e-mailing Jack.
A year later, my dreams had worn away. I thought Jack would inspire me into action, like a giant arrow that would show me the way.
I e-mailed him, and then again — but got no

15
my e-mails, I
16
woke up. What was I doing? I was waiting! Now I remembered the crowd, most likely
17
that hundred-dollar bill, while they sat glued to their chairs.
Usually we all have a “Jack” for whom we wait — whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. We
18
believe the gifts of life are just around the corner, and that everything will come in a(n)
19
way. So we don’t try. We
20
. But as Wayne Gretzky said,“You’11 always miss 100% of the opportunities you don’t take!” So I stopped waiting and started my writing career.
Now what are you waiting for?

Whenever I recall my childhood, there is one thing I remember clearly. My father used his
1
to let my mother
2
her parents who lived far away. There was just my younger brother and myself in the
3
. One evening, our father came home and there was no
4
, not even a piece of bread. My father had no money and he was as
5
as we were. My brother and I went to bed without having anything.
6
I knew from the expressions on my father’s face that he could not
7
us be hungry for long. He left the house, and about two hours later he
8
and woke us up. He had two small potato pies in his hands. I didn’t know where he got the money for the food but somehow he
9
to find a way. It was clear that he wanted to get his children
10
.
My father did not eat and had
11
all day but he sat there and felt
12
at seeing us eat. This has always stuck in my
13
. At that moment, I felt
14
knowing that he tried his best not to let us
15
, and he wanted us to know he was always there with us.
In
16
times, I think, it is important not to
17
weakness but strength.
18
the mother is the cement(黏合剂)that
19
a family together, then the father is the steel that strengthens that cement.
It is his values and
20
that have carried me forward and helped me deal with my own problems in life.

The Catherine family enjoyed the good things in life as much as anyone else. They
1
games, books, music, toys, good food and good times. But sometimes
2
seemed, especially to Mrs. Catherine who
3
the house, that they had too much stuff in the closets, in the drawers, in the basement, and almost
4
. It made Mrs. Catherine a little
5
.
One day, at breakfast, Mrs. Catherine made a(n)
6
. “This family,”she said firmly, “has too much stuff. It's time to get
7
of some of them. ”The three children all
8
with this idea and helped pile used things and unused things they were never going to use into the car.
Their first
9
was Home for the Aged where the older went to live. Nurses and doctors looked after them, but sometimes the older got a little lonely and
10
. They liked visitors and things to do. When the family arrived at Home for the Aged, they
11
out their games and puzzles to the older and then sat down to play games and do puzzles with them. They had a
12
time and they were sorry when it was time to leave.
Their next stop was the Young Cubs Hospital. The Catherine family dropped
13
their load of used toys which were very welcome. The hospital workers said the toys would be given out at the hospital
14
party.
Their last stop was People Who Care store. This was a store that sold things to
15
money for those who needed warm clothes and good food. The Catherine family lugged all their old clothes and furniture into the store.
After that, the Catherine family
16
home with warm feelings about what they had done.
17
they drove along, they passed the lighted
18
of supermarkets which were beautifully decorated for Christmas. There was window after window of the very latest things, but they were so filled with special thoughts about helping others that they
19
noticed the wonderful things in the windows except maybe out of the
20
of their eyes.

The cell door
1
and I hear Chief's keys clinking as other doors clang shut further down the row. I step into my little cell and sit down. I glance up at the window, covered in mesh(铁网),and think to myself, “This isn't a life, it's just a(n)
2
.”
Being
3
makes me feel as though I'm being buried alive. I am a puppet(木偶) with people
4
strings so that I eat, sleep and wake when they want me to.
I lie on my bed as night
5
and think the same thoughts
6
. I think about how it all went so wrong, and imagine how I will
7
for all the time I've lost.
Every day I live the same routine and nothing changes except the people. Prisoners depart for other prisons, or get
8
. Others
9
from different prisons, or fresh from custody. It's a
10
revolving(旋转) door.
When I committed my
11
, I was a lost young boy, but now I am
12
. Walking around the yard, I would notice my fellow prisoners reading books and writing letters to friends and family, which upset me as my
13
at school was limited.
I longed for the day when I'd be able to sit in the sun, enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a newspaper or book
14
my choice. I also longed to write letters to my friends and family, sharing my thoughts and feelings.
I decided not to waste my time inside and,
15
, make the most of all the resources available to me. I started to learn and was
16
to realize my dream.
Now, after five years' persistence, heartache and hard work, I have
17
my goal. Having
18
a course as a reading adviser, I can now help others to read and write. And I have even started a creative writing workshop at Junee Correctional Centre. Learning to read and write at a highter level has given me the inner strength to present myself in a more
19
manner.
And the day I've dreamed about has come true: I now enjoy my cup of coffee with a book in my other hand. Learning to read and write has changed my life and this article is my first piece of “proper” writing, and it won't be my

Ena was very pretty and kind.
1
, when she woke up and stretched(伸展) her arms above her head one day she felt a bald patch in her hair. Then she
2
lots of hair on her pillow. Over the next few months her hair continued to
3
. Ena felt shock and sad. And
4
she lost all her hair and she hated being
5
. She was angry with her body and she was
6
that people might laugh at her at school.
But then, Ena had a wonderful day on January 9
th
! It was her birthday and she got a(n)
7
present---- a wig(假发)!Trying on the wig made Ena feel very happy. She felt
8
again. The first Ena went to school, people asked why her
9
was different, and whether she had a wig on. Ena replied, “No.” She was worried because did notice the
10
and she was anxious that someone might try to
11
her wig off.
Then her classmates got used to it and stopped asking her questions. But as time went by, she began to feel that the
12
she kept about her hair was too big and making her feel
13
. She wanted to share it with her. So, one Friday, Ena went to the front of the classroom, and she told everyone
14
, “I have a wig on.” She told them about her
15
-----alopecia(秃头症) and
16
that all her hair had fallen out, including her eyelashes and eyebrows. Everybody’ eyes widened and some people put their hands up to their faces when Ena took her wig off. They listened to her story
17
, sitting very quietly, and when Ena finished, everybody clapped. And they started to say
18
things while Ena passed the wig around for everyone to touch. Finally, the whole class and the head teacher
19
Ena to do her lessons without her wig on.
It’s not
20
having no hair, and Ena has positive days as well as other days when it is hard. However, she always remembers what her teacher told her, “It doesn’t matter that you don’t have hair; you’re still the same person inside.”

College is a big deal for American students as well as for Chinese students. During the college
1
, some parents become extremely worried. This may only
2
the pressure.
Before I applied to the college, I told my parents I would get everything
3
out. If I needed any help, I promised that I would ask them.
As it
4
out, I had no problem putting everything together on my
5
, including my resume(履历) and a basic outline of my activities in high school. The
6
part where I asked for my parents' advice was the essays. In writing and revising the essays, I needed feedback(反馈) from an audience. As my parents know me better than
7
else, they were
8
for the job.
The essays are extremely important in college admissions. In a competitive pool of applicants, the test scores and activities, as well as the recommendations are all going to be very
9
. The essays are the one area in which students can make themselves stand
10
. Essays don't have to be big and complicated. I wrote three essays, all
11
on small matters and using simple sentences. The admission officers have to read hundreds of essays a day; they are already
12
of SAT vocabularies and long sentences.
13
, a straightforward writing style is refreshing to their eyes as well as their minds. Essays were the key to my success in the admission game. I just wrote about what I wanted to say, not what I thought the admission officers
14
to hear.
In my main narrative-style
15
, I told the story of my American journey at the age of 14. During that time, I was not bogged down(陷入) by trying to fit into a new
16
; instead, I looked up to Mother Teresa for guidance and strength. I found my new
17
and grew to love the name Teresa and the memories it held.
In my two minor essays, I
18
the major events of my life, why I loved writing and why my dad is the person who has the greatest influence on me. Both provided details of my character. The essay about writing, which is titled, “I Shall Not Live in Vain” (
19
by an Emily Dickinson poem), earned a lot of praise.
It is
20
I really looked into my heart and thought deeply in order to reach my answers.

I can honestly say it was the best of times and the worst of times. I was joyfully expecting my first child at the same time that my mother was
1
her battle with a brain tumor(瘤). For ten years, my fiercely independent and
2
mother had fought, but none of the treatments had been successful.
3
, she never lost her ability to smile. But now, finally, she became totally
4
—unable to speak, walk, eat or dress on her own.
As she grew closer and closer to death, my
5
grew closer and closer to life inside me. My biggest
6
was that their lives would never connect. I was sad not only at the
7
loss of my mother, but that she and my baby would never know each other. Her doctor did not
8
any hope; they told us her time was up.
We brought Mother
9
to her own bed in her own house. As
10
as I could, I sat beside her and talked to her about the baby moving inside me.
On February 3, 1989, at about the same time my labor(分娩)
11
, Mother opened her eyes. When they told me this at the
12
, I called her home, “Mom, listen. The baby is coming! You’re going to have a new grandchild!”
“Yes! Yes! I know!”
Four beautiful words! The first
13
words she’d spoken in months!
When I
14
again an hour later, the nurse at her house told the
15
message: Mom sat up, smiling, with her oxygen tubes removed. When I brought Jacob home. Mom was sitting in her chair and
16
to welcome him. Tears of joy blocked my vision(视野) as I
17
my son in her arms and she clucked (发出咯咯声) at him. They
18
.
Then she quietly clipped back into a coma (昏迷) and
19
peacefully. Memories of my son’s birth will always be bittersweet(甜中带苦的) for me, but it was then that I learned love has the
20
to overcome any worries and any sorrow. And love can last forever.

A year ago I paid no attention to English idioms,
1
my teacher said again and again that it was important.
One day, I happened to

6
change the topic. So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall?
7

11
.” Soon I was interrupted again by his words, “
12
!” I couldn’t
13
asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do
14
”, he answered, gently surprised.
I said, “Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say’?”
Hearing this, the Englishman

to tears.He began to
