The benefits of telling a bedtime story should never be neglected by any parent. It is important to your child’s overall development.
Telling bedtime stories helps your child expand his vocabulary, improves his listening skills, and develops his ability to understand events and characters. His oral communication skills will improve. Storytelling is a great way to make your child interested in reading and also in expressing their thoughts through writing.
There are various thinking skills that are mastered by your little one as he listens to a story. He learns to recall the information and use it in real life. As your child listens to different ideas, he will be more open to accept new ideas. He learns to be more flexible in his thinking but, at the same time, have his own points of view.
Your child also learns to solve problems through stories. For instance, he may behave appropriately in various situations. Your child will learn a lot from the story and pay attention to his behavior.
Some tales tell us of moral values, which are important for your child’s moral development. Knowing that other kids also learn basic manners and respect for elders in stories, he will son develop a set of moral values for his own.
The last but not least benefit would be the quality time you spend together with your child. This close and personal time between the parent and the child is not easily copied in other situations. Your child will have a good relationship with you.

Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding the speeches made by native speakers. The following ways might help improve your listening skills.
First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something
beyond your level.
Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Don’t go on to the second book until you are sure you understand the first one.
Secondly, keep studying one course. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more popular.
Thirdly, listen to the English news over the radio from time to time. Better look through the news stories in Chinese-language newspapers first. That will make it easier for you to understand the English news on the radio.
Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in Special English from the V.O.A or other listening materials of the same level as those of your textbook.

We arrived in Spain for the first time a few weeks ago. I decided to

2
home. Yesterday the sales office rang us to say the car was
3
. I had tried out a model like it before, but as I was not yet

driving in this city, my wife did not want me to collect it
5
so we went together to

the papers. They told us that there was
8
petrol(汽油)to take us to a garage, where we could fill up. The
9
garage to the office was about 100 yards away and we got there
10
.But when I turned into the main road I suddenly saw a lot of cars racing
11
me. I got out of
12
as fast as I could by backing into the garage

and the man behind
14
me.
"It’s such a problem to

All children in the United States have to receive an education, but not all children go to school. A number of parents
1
not to send their children to school. Such children are known
2
“home-schoolers”. Some parents prefer teaching their children at home
3
they do not believe schools teach the correct religious (宗教的)
4
; others believe they can provide a better educational
5
for their children by doing so.
6
, results show home-schooled children often do better than
7
on national tests in reading and math.
David teaches his three children at home. He
8
that his children learn very differently from children in school. Learning starts with the children’s
9
and questions. For example, when there is snowfall on a winter day, it may
10
a discussion about climate, snow removal
11
, Alaska, etc. Or a spring evening when the family is out
12
the stars is a good time to ask questions about the sky. If the Brazilian rain forests are on TV, it
13
be a perfect time to talk about how rain forests influence the climate, how deserts are
14
and how the polar ice caps
15
ocean levels.
Home schooling is often more interesting than
16
schools, but critics (批评家) say home-schoolers might be uncomfortable
17
with other people in adult life. Critics also say that most parents are not
18
to teach their children. However, most parents don’t have the time or the
19
to teach their children at home, so schools will continue to be
20
most children get their formal education.

For most of the day construction worker Sidney Smith and his brother – in – law Joseph Chambers had been
1
along the banks of Lake Waco with little
2
. Chambers suggested they go home, but Smith
3
that there were still several hours of daylight
4
and there was one other place they might try a bit longer before
5
.
Smith drove his pickup(小货车)a couple of miles along the
6
road to get to the other side of the lake. This road, in the truest sense, was a path wagging in the heavy
7
area. Even with the sun still high in the cloudless sky, the
8
of trees formed a leafy
9
over the road and it suddenly seemed
10
in the evening.
“A guy could get lost and nobody would ever find him,” said Chambers.
Smith smiled, “We’re
11
there.” He said. A few seconds later, the smile was
12
from his face.
“What the hell is that?”
He braked to a stop. Less than twenty feet away was what appeared to be a
13
.
For several minutes the two men sat in the pickup
14
to decide whether they had happened to
15
someone’s bad practical joke or something far more serious. Smith with his brother-in-law got out of the pickup and
16
walked towards that thing some distance before them.
It was a young man who was already dead. They had got to tell
17
. Back into the pickup, Smith backed the pickup down the road
18
he could turn around, then
19
back. With the dead young man still on his mind, Smith felt as if he was going to be sick. God, how he
20
they had given up fishing and gone home early.

Job stress has been known to cause heart problems in people who already have cardiovascular(心血管) disease. Now Finnish scientists have shown that
1
in healthy people the pressure of work can cause damage.
High blood pressure, lack of
2
, smoking and being overweight
3
to heart disease—a
4
killer in many industrialized countries.
But Mika Kivimaki, of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and his colleagues, who studied the
5
histories of 812 healthy Finnish men and women in a metal industry company over 25 years, said job stress also plays an important role.
Workers who had the highest job-related stress levels at the start of the study were more than twice as
6
to die of heart disease,
7
the study published in The British Medical Journal.
Work stress
8
too much work as well as a lack of satisfaction and feeling undervalued and
9
.
Many people work long hours but if the effort is
10
the stress is minimized. Kivimaki said job pressure is damaging when being overworked is
11
with little or no control, unfair supervision and few career opportunities.
The British Heart Foundation said the results
12
earlier research showing that people in jobs with low control, such as manual workers, could be at greater
13
of heart disease than other employees.
“It is
14
for people to try to minimize levels of stress at work and for employers to
15
people to have more control at work and to be rewarded for their success,” the foundation said in a statement.

The best way of learning a language is using it. The best way of learning English is talking in English as much as possible. Sometimes you'll get your words mixed up (混合) and people will not understand you. Sometimes people will say things too quickly and you can't understand them. But if you keep your sense of humor, you can always have a good laugh at the mistakes you make. Don't be unhappy if people seem to be laughing at your mistakes. It's better for people to laugh at your mistakes than to be angry with you, because they don't understand what you are saying. Robert Frost was at heart a mean-spirited human being, not the kind of man one would expect to write poetry. He was born in San Francisco. Frost entered Dartmouth University in 1893, but dropped out, and switched to Harvard, which he attended for two years. He started a brief teaching career, where he was inspired to become a poet by some of his students’ work. Frost stopped teaching and became a farmer. During this time he wrote numerous poems, and a couple of short stories. While he was a farmer he started to think seriously about becoming a famous poet.
In almost all of his poems, Frost wrote in the first person. The first widely-read poem that he published was called My Butterfly. At first his audience was very small, but with his Collected Poems he became famous. Robert Frost received almost all the awards that there were for poetry. His poetry describes the forces of nature, and the violence and deep emotional(情感的) needs of human beings, which reflect the experiences of his childhood.
Robert Frost will always be known as one of the best poets in history. His way of putting emotion and violence into words is remarkable(非同寻常的). His talent for poetry is natural-born and he had discovered this when he started to farm. Even though he treated his wife and children terribly, he still became one of the best-known poets of his and our day.
