We always celebrated Dad’s birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home . As years went on , these events took on a
1
meaning for me : A traditional birthday party for Dad , and thanking for all that he had been doing to me in my life . When we knew it might be his
2
birthday, the whole family decided to
3
together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home .
Dad was a good story-teller and here was the
4
he had had .During a quiet moment , I announced it was now Dad’s
5
to listen to stories for a change . I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him . The room became
6
. Then one after another , people told stories from their hearts , while Dad
7
with tears in eyes . People
8
kinds of stories — stories about when they were little , stories about when Dad was young , and stories that shared family treasures .
The stories
9
. Everyone seemed to have more than one story . Even the little grandchildren couldn’t
10
to tell Dad why they loved him . For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life , here was our
11
to celebrate him . A few months later , at Dad’s memorial service , we more fully realized what we had
12
Dad that night . Those are the stories people
13
tell at a funeral (葬礼)after a loved one is no longer
14
to hear the words . They tell stories , full of
15
. But we had given those memories to Dad in his
16
, and we had told them through laughter , accompanied by hugs and joys . He had them to
17
and roll over in his mind during his last days and months .
Words do
18
, and they are enough . We just need to say them or to speak them
19
to the ones we love . That’s the way to
20
love and our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life .

Whenever we hear about “the homeless”, most of us think of the Developing world. But the
1
is that homelessness is everywhere. For example, how many of us would expect to see people living on the streets of a
2
country like Germany?
Kurt Muller and his wife Rita have spent eleven years making
3
for the homeless of Berlin, Germany’s capital. They first
4
one long hot summer when most Germans were
5
on holiday. Kurt and his wife stayed at home, made sandwiches,
6
la table in the street and gave food to the homeless.
The Mullers soon realized that food and clothing weren’t
7
. “What these people also need is warmth and
8
,” says Rita. The Mullers didn’t
9
to give their phone number to the street people and told them to phone anytime. Rita
10
there was somebody at home to answer the phone and their home was always
11
to anyone who couldn’t face another night on the street.
The couple were soon
12
all their time and money, so Kurt visited food and clothing companies to
13
donations. Today, over thirty companies
14
donate food and other goods to the cause and volunteers help to
15
them to the homeless. The public also give clothes and money and a shoe producer
16
new shoes.
Kurt and Rita receive no
17
for their hard work. “ We feel like parents,” says Rita, “and parents shouldn’t
18
money for helping their children. The love we get on the streets is our salary.” Though Rita admits she often gets
19
. She says she will continue with her work because she likes the feeling of having made a

in the world.

Lose-Win is weak. It’s easy to get stepped on. It’s easy to be the nice guy. It’s easy to give in, all in the name of being a peacemaker.
A girl named Jenny once told me about her
1
in the world of Lose-Win during her eighth-grade year before she finally broke
2
:
My
3
with my mom all started one day
4
she said to me sarcastically (讽刺地) “Wow, you’re surely lively today.” I
5
it so literally (字面地) that then and there I decided to close off from her and never
6
back to her. So every time she would say something
7
I disagreed with her I would just say. “Okay,
8
you want, Mom.” But I really got cold quickly. And my
9
began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s
10
” and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever
11
?” I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She had no idea I was
12
upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I
13
her bow important it was to me.
At last I just blew up. “Mom, this has got to
14
. You tell me everything you want me to do and I just do it because it’s
15
than if fighting. Well, I’m sick of it.” This all came as a
16
to her.
After my blow up, we felt like we were
17
all over in our relationship. But it’s getting better all the lime. We discuss things now and I always
18
my feelings with her.
If you adopt Lose-Win as your basic
19
toward life, then people will wipe their dirty feet on you. You’11 also be
20
your true feelings deep inside. And that’s not healthy.

I was going hunting along the motorway the other day when there was a sudden bang and I almost fell off my motorbike. It had a hole in the front tyre and it’s not easy to
1
a bike without any air in the tyre.
I
2
stop without falling off luckily, but I still had the problem of what to do with the hole. A motorbike isn’t like a car; you can’t just change a wheel and go on your way. Now, you have to take the wheel off, find the hole, cover it with a piece of rubber, and then put the wheel back together again. Usually it costs you a lot of time and you get very dirty. As I didn’t have any
3
, I set to work. It didn’t
4
long to get the wheel off and it wasn’t hard to
5
the tyre from the wheel. The fun really began when I had to put the wheel back on the bike. You have no
6
how easy it is to
7
small pieces of motorbike in the dark.
In the
8
the bike was all together again but then I realized I hadn’t got a pump, so how was I going to blow up the tyre? Fortunately, a
9
motorist saw me and pulled up. He lent me his pump and I was soon ready to start off again. Next time I am in the motorbike shop I really must remember to buy myself a small pump though I don’t know
10
I am going to carry it on the motorbike.

Anger Management
Throughout the school day, students often go
1
many different emotions. One common emotion is
2
. How we
3
anger usually shows what kind of temper we have.
4
, one of my best friends had a really bad
5
. Whenever she
6
angry, she would pass out because she didn’t know how to
7
her anger in a healthy way. Lately, however, she has been
8
“ anger management.” She has been learning
9
to express her anger in a way that is healthy and constructive.
Students can improve their bad temper
10
learning anger management. There are
11
anger management strategies to
12
temper. The goal is to
13
the one that works best for you and to use it again and again
14
your anger management strategy becomes a habit. A common strategy students can begin to
15
are things like self-talk where you say
16
phrases to yourself such as “keep cool,” “don’t worry about it,” and “ it will be all right.” Other anger management
17
include counting backwards from ten
18
a steady pace and, as always, walking away from the situation that is making you mad. No matter
19
kind of anger management strategy you choose, it should help
20
your bad temper into one that helps you deal with anger in a healthy way!

When I was growing up, I always gave my mom an apron (围裙)on her birthday.I wanted my own mom —
1
that apron I'd just given her, of course —to
2
me at the end of each afternoon bearing a plate of home-baked
3
as she waited breathlessly to hear about my
4
day at school.
Mom loved her family without question, but as an elementary-school teacher she had her own exciting days to
5
.She had hardly any extra time and
6
, and home-baked treats were rare in our house except
7
very special occasions.Since Mom didn't make cookies very often, the
8
of her baking were not always the same.Sometimes the cookies were browned a little more than planned or
9
together and other times the cookies weren't smooth.
10
, none of that bothered anyone in the family. All we
11
was swallowing whatever we were having for dinner that night so we could get to the cookies
12
us on the kitchen counter.
Now that I'm a mom myself, I can
13
all too well why my mother didn't always have the time to wear the apron. As was true with my mother, the list of things I need to do is often
14
than the day itself. But I also understand the desire to
15
the same yellow mixing bowl my mother used and make something special for my family every so often.Whatever I bake is met with approval, appreciation and good
16
by my husband and children. At some level, I believe they're
17
that I was thinking about them as I
18
the brown sugar into the butter or frosted the cake with their favorite kind of icing. They always know I love them.I
19
they know it a little better when I'm in a baking mood.
I'm sure my mother felt
20
the same way whenever she made cookies for us.Those cookies will always, in my mind, be the best treat.

I have eyes that are said to be “cow brown,” and my long fair hair is my best feature .Iam not overweight, but I’m not too
1
either.
I’m relatively happy with my
2
,but where did I get it? Do I share the same features as some unknown stranger?
3
, while walking down the street, I tried to
4
that stranger, imagining that one of the women I passed
5
possibly be my biological mother.
For a long time I wondered what life would be like with
6
. I was never
7
with my life. I just never
8
wondering what it would be like to have been raised by my biological mother. And then one day, I
9
a poem which compared adoption
10
a seed that was planted by one person and then taken care of by another. The second person had
11
the seed and made it grow to be tall and beautiful. I found that it compared perfectly to my
12
.
Gradually I
13
that my mom had made me who I am today. She did my hair for my first dance. She was there for my first hearbreak… She’d been there for
14
that ever mattered. And I started to notice that we had the same silly
15
, the same attitude to life, and the same way of treating people.
Sometimes when we’re out somewhere, people comment on
16
we look alike, and we turn to each other and laugh,
17
until that moment that she wasn’t the one who gave birth to me.
18
I may not know why I look the way I do, I know why I am who I am. The mom I have now is the
19
one I ever could have hoped for, not only because she holds a huge amount of unconditional(无条件的)love, but because she has

who I am today.

This is a real life story of the engineers building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. In 1869, a creative engineer named John Roebling was
1
by an idea to build a spectacular bridge
2
New York with the Long Island.
3
, bridge-building experts throughout the world thought that this was impossible and told Roebling to forget the idea.
Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he
4
to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge
5
could be built. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway, a tragic accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which
6
him not being able to talk or walk.
7
his handicap, Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning
8
to complete the bridge and his mind was still as
9
as ever. He didn’t want to
10
. Suddenly an idea
11
him. All he could do was move one
12
and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he
13
developed a code of communication with his wife.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his
14
with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands for his determination not to be
15
by circumstances. It stands too as a monument to the love and
16
of his wife who for 13 years long

decoded(解码)the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves a(n)
18
goal. Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles(障碍) seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that
19
that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence(坚持), no matter what the

are.

A few years ago, when I was about
1
,I went out for a walk
2
a rainy summer day. I saw a man
3
small, dirty colthes. He had
4
umbrella, and he was picking bottles out of bushes. When he found
5
,he smiled and put it in his big bag. I thought,“I wish there
6
some way to help him. Well, I could give him my umbrella.” Then I walked to him
7
gave the umbrella to him.“You need this more than I
8
.” The man took it with
9
big smile on his face and said,“Thank you! Thank you!” And then I walked away
10
good, I turned around and saw him
11
a lot more, even though he was still picking bottles from bushes. “It was just an umbrella.” I thought, not
12
that it was the kindness
13
made him happy.
A few weeks later I was walking on a sunny day, and
14
the same man with the same clothes,
15
the same big bag
16
of bottles. The only
17
was that my umbrella was right in the corner, looking
18
he cherished(爱护) it. It was so clean.
It didn’t
19
that I couldn’t give the man a house and a job and I only did I was able to do. But
20
0made someone else happier, so that was enough.

Think you can’t be happy? You’11 think again after reading this story.
Barbara Ann Kipfer hated her feet. They were too big and she always seemed to
1
over them when someone was
2
—usually a smart guy. Come to think of it, her teeth were too big, too. The other kids teased her because of the way she
3
and because she wanted to be a sportswriter some day. No matter what she did, she was teased for being “
4
.”
That’s
5
she started writing down things that she liked in a notebook. “It was like a friend, and it
6
me that there are good things,
7
everything around me is unpleasant,” she says. She copied the list over and over,
8
new things every day.
One day, she decided to
9
her list with some of the girls in her class, hoping they would think it was as much fun as she did. But
10
, they made her feel stupid again. “They laughed at me,” she remembers, “I was ashamed, and I
11
doing it.” Here comes the
12
part. When she was in 10th grade, Kipfer found her old notebook and decided to
13
where she left off. “It was like a diary, like a photograph of my life,” she says. She started writing to publishers, asking them if they’d be interested in printing her list as a book.
She kept writing to one company
14
, because she liked the types of books it printed. “He kept saying, ‘It’s just a list, what am I supposed to do with it?’” “You’re not
15
to do anything with it. It’s
16
supposed to remind people of something they did that was really
17
.”
Finally, the publisher
18
to turn Kipfer’s list into a book, which sold more than million copies! 14,000 Things to Be Happy About even
19
it to be New York Times Best Sellers list.
20
being a best-selling author, Kipfer also went to realize her dream of becoming a sports editor at the Chicago Tribune.
