Job stress hits students

As the job-hunting season kicks off, many graduates are suffering from anxiety. Job interview  results are becoming the most common conversation topic in dormitories, Worried about not getting  satisfactory offers, some students have sleep problems, or lose their appetite. Some might even display symptoms of depression.

According to a survey across several universities in Wuhan conducted by Wuhan Yangtze Business University, over 72 percent of student participants were worried about finding a job.Students in the first one or two years were also uneasy about their job prospects, which contributed to spreading anxiety further.

Lang Lei.22, a business major from Renmin University in Beijing, admitted having mood swings when job hunting. The student hoped to get positions with large state-owned enterprises in  his hometown of Yantai, Shandong. But when it turned out that things wouldn't be so easy, Lang became concerned. After some struggling moments, he has now changed to more realistic goals.

Others feel tortured(受折磨)while waiting for interview results. Mo Tong, a senior software  engineering major at South China Normal University, would fall into a nervous state every time after  he attended a job interview.

“For a day or two I couldn't help but keep thinking about how l performed in front of the interviewers, how well I dealt with their questions, and whether they would consider giving me a  chance in the end,"   Mo was unable to focus on other things as his anxiety grew.

Media reports about rising unemployment rates and a difficult job market have touched  students' nerves.

‘‘I’m alarmed by articles saying how bachelor's degree holders are losing ground," said Wang Hongjuan,a sophomore English major from Putian University in Fujian province. "It suggests to me that good jobs are only available to graduate or doctoral students."

As Wang has no plans to further her education, she has to commit herself to all sorts of extracurricular activities to improve her prospects. This throws her into a packed schedule.

Wen Fang, a well-known education psychology expert and consultant in Beijing, advises students not to be misled by depressing surveys and reports about the job market. "Unemployment rates are not linked to an individual's chances of getting a job," he said. "An individual's chances are actually mainly determined by his or her capability."

According to Wen, a moderate degree of anxiety is normal-it can even be helpful. But if it constantly affects a student's normal life, one should pay more attention. "Focus on adapting yourself to the needs of society, and never ever overestimate your goals," Wen added.

When I was seven, my parents gave me a doll, a doll's house and a book. The Arabian Nights, came wrapped in red paper. I was just ready to read when my mother walked into my room.

"Isn't your doll just beautiful?" my mother asked. I looked at the doll, with fair hair in a pink dress-I'll have to call her "she" because I never gave her a name. I folded my lips and raised my eyebrows, not really knowing how to let my mother down easily.

"This doll is different." My mother explained, trying to talk me into playing with it.

Thinking the doll needed love, I hugged her tightly for a long time. Useless, I said to myself. Finally, I decided to play with the doll's house. But since rearranging the tiny furniture seemed to be the only active possible, I lost interest. I caught sight again of the third of my gift The Arabian Nights, and I began to read it. From that moment, the book was my constant companion.

Every day I climbed our garden tree, Nestled among its branches, I read the stories in The Arabian Nights to my heart's content. My mother became concerned as she noliced I wasn't playing with either the doll or the little house. She insisted that I take the doll up the tree with me.

Trying to read on a branch 15 feet off the ground while holding on to the silly doll was not easy. Alter nearly falling off twice, I tied one end of a long vine around the doll's neck and the opposite one -around the branch, letting the doll hang in mid air while I read. I always looked out for my mother, though. I sensed that my playing with the doll was of great importance to her. So every time I heard her coming, I lifted the doll up and hugged her. The smile in my mother's eyes told me my plan worked.

The inevitable happened one afternoon. Totally absorbed in the reading, I didn't hear my mother calling me. When I looked down, I saw my mother staring at the hanging doll. Fearing the worst of scolding, I climbcd down in a flash, reaching the ground just as my mother was untying the doll. To my surprise, she didn't scold. She kept on staring at the doll.

The next day, my father came home early and suggested he and I play with the doll's house.Soon I was bored, but my father seemed to be.having so much fun, I didn't have the heart to tell him.Quietly I slipped out, picking up my book on my way to the yard. So absorbed was he in arranging and rearranging the tiny furniture that he didn't notice my quick exit.

Almost 20 years passed before I found out why the hanging-doll incident had been so significant for my parents. By then I was a parent myself. After recalling the incident, my mother said all those years she had been afraid whether I would turn out to be a most loving and understanding mother to my son.

My mother often thanks God aloud for making me a good parent, pointing out that with education I might have been a rich dentist instead of a poor poet. I look back on that same childhood incident, recalling my third gift, the book in red- paper, and I take advantage of the experiences that have made me who and what I am. Sometimes I pause to wonder at life's wonderful ironies (讽刺) .

China-A senior business official has expressed the hope that stronger economic ties between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will not be affected by territorial rows in the South China Sea.

"China is not willing to see an impact on economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN by the South China Sea dispute, which would be harmful to both sides," said Xu Ningning, executive deputy secretary-general of the China-ASEAN Business Council. But he did express concern that rising bilateral investment between China and ASEAN members may suffer if the situation continues to get worse.

Speaking at an awards ceremony for Chinese and ASEAN enterprises, Xu warned that Chinese and Southeast Asian investors may be concerned about their investment return if the tension continues. He said that although governments will try to maintain bilateral investment growth between China and ASEAN, it's up to the enterprises to choose their investment destinations and make specific investment plans, especially under sensitive conditions. "A closer economic relationship and more comprehensive trading cooperation will promote political relations of mutual trust between China and ASF,AN," Xu said.

At the East Asian summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, last week, ASEAN members, together with China and five other Asia-Pacific countries, announced the launch of talks on what could be the world's largest Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Guan Dengming, China's former ambassador to the Philippines, said that bilateral interests in terms of trade cooperation, are much bigger than the effects of territorial disputes and that the cooperative development between China and ASEAN would not be affected by the dispute.

In 2011, China-ASEAN trade reached $362.85 billion, an increase of 23.9 percent, compared with last year. By 2015, bilateral trade is set to reach $500 billion. According to the council, Chinese enterprises had invested $18.5 billion in ASEAN countries by the end of October of this year.

A pill costing little more than &1 a day could save the lives of thousands suffering from a common heart disease. British doctors have decided to use the drug, ivabradine, to treat patients with heart failure straight away, even though it has not yet been licensed for the disease in the UK.

More than 700,000 people live with heart failure, which occurs when the organ becomes too weak to pump blcod efficiently round the body. This can lead to fatigue, breathlessness, increased heart rate and other serious complications. Around 100,000 people a year are thought to die from heart failure and many patients are repeatedly admitted to hospital because of their symptoms.

The dramatic results from the trial of 6,500 patients-the biggest of its kind-found a 26 per cent cut in heart failure deaths, suggesting the lives of around 10,000 British patients could be saved each year. The research also found ivabradine will help reduce the number of hospital admissions by 26 per cent, which would cut costs.

The trial, carried out in 37 countries including the UK, showed particular benefits for patients who cannot take beta blockers (阻滞药). Beta blockers reduce the heart rate, giving it more time to fill with blood before the next beat. But in as many as 50 percent of patients beta blockers do not work or have unpleasant side effects.

All the patients in the trial had high heart rates of around 77 beats per minute on average.lvabradine lowers the number of beats to around 60 per minute without reducing blood pressure, which means the damaged heart is pumping more efficiently at a slower rate.

Professor Cowie, consultant cardiologist (心脏病学家) at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, said, "This is a very clean way of dropping the heart rate Patients on beta blockers complain of tiredness and many stop taking it." At a very conservative estimate, prescribing ivabradine to eligible patients could save between 5,000 and 10,000 lives a year, he said.

    A. ivabradine can remove all the symptoms

Everyone knows what it feels like to be hungry, though few of us

can imagine the pain of starvation. But the new movie Back to 1942,

directed by Feng Xiaogang, who is perhaps China's most clever

commercial movie director, brings this pain to life. For some, Feng may

be too commercial at timcs. But with his new movie Back to1942, Feng

might avoid such criticism. The film, based on a novel by Liu Zhenyun,

makes the audiences aware of China's history and the difficult times our

ancestors faced when more than 3 million people lost their lives in 1942,

a time when China was engaged in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937—1945) .

This historic background provides the perfect material to create a wonderful movie. And Feng is no stranger to using exciting elements, such as destructive natural disasters as seen in Aftershock(《唐山大地震》) and thrilling battle scenes as seen in Assembly(《集结号》). Combined with a strong cast, which includes Xu Fan, Zhang Guoli, Chen Daoming and Zhang Hanyu, it is almost certain that these elements will ensure the movie becomes a major box office hit, at least in China.

But this time, Feng seems to have set his eyes on the international market as well.Joininng the strong Chinese cast are two big names from Hollywood: Tim Robbins who plays a Catholic priest and Adrien Brody who plays American journalist Theodore White. Many of the movie's scenes, like the ones showing the bombing attacks by the Japanese army, are very Hollywood-style, both in terms of their scale and technical level.

But somehow, the movie, like many of its kind, such as White Deer Plain(《白鹿原》), falls short on generating an emotional impact. It seems to conflrm the old saying "one man dying is a tragedy, but a million deaths is a statistic figure".

In the end, the movie pictures a legend that will undoubtedly be treasured at home and; most likely, be filed abroad as another lesson in modern Chinese history-but one well worth remembering and learning from.

Feng, famous for directing comedies, has spent 10 years preparing for his latest work. When asked why he had been so determined to make the movie, Feng told, "China has gone through numerous disasters, but the whole nation Jacks introspection(反省) on the sufferings, so I hope that audiences, especially young people, can learn more about the troubled history of the country."

A Priceless Gift

My son is a crazy hockey fan. Several years ago, we watched a game together and he was very  excited because we had only been able to attend a game   36   twice before. When the Rangers 37_   ,the crowd shouted wildly and it seemed as if the building would  38  from noise.

For my son, the victory was  46 than exciting. The goalie(守门员)picked the hockey puck(球)and threw it into the crowd. One of the three young men sitting in front of us 47  the puck and, as if in one motion after catching it, threw it back to my son.

My son looked at the puck as if he had been given a precious  48  .And then, obviously    49 ,he asked in a trembling voice, "Why did that man give me the puck?"

I 50  to my son that the man had given him the puck because he knew how happy it would make him to have a souvenir from the game, which had been the winning goal in a shootout.

Still in  51 ,my son said: "He should have 52  it for himself. Why should he give it away ?I really write and thank him."

I told my son that there was probably no way he would be able to find the man so that he could write to him. But I did say that there was something he could do-that when he was a grown-up attending a hockey game, he could look  53  for a boy or girl about his age now, and make sure that  54  he caught a puck coming off the rink(对场),he would pass it along to them. My son nodded, and I knew he  55
