61.__________ A wolf was almost dead with hunger. A housedog saw him, and asked, “Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you”. Why don't you work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly?" "I would have no objection," said the wolf, "if I could only get a place." "I will help you," said the dog. "Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work." So the wolf and the dog went to the town together. On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog's neck. He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that? "Oh, it is nothing," said the dog. "Every night my master puts a collar around my neck and chains me up. You will soon get used to it." "Is that the only reason?" said the wolf. "Then good-bye to you, my friend. I would rather be free."

62. __________ Two men were traveling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."

63. __________ A prince had some monkeys trained to dance. Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers. Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage. The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors. Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts. The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.

64. __________ A cock was once strutting(趾高气扬地走)up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he noticed something shining in the straw. "Ho! ho!" said he, "that’s for me," and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. It turned out to be a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard. “You may be a treasure,” sighed the cock, “to man, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn.”

65. __________ An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bunch of sticks, and said to his eldest son: "Break it." The son tried hard, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful. “Untie it,” said the father, “and each of you take a stick.” When they had done so, he called out to them: “Now, break,” and each stick was easily broken.

It was a cold night in December. Two beggars were sitting on a busy street corner in the downtown section of the city. The cold wind made them huddle (挤) together for heat and comfort. They watched helplessly as scores of people walked by, some ignoring them on purpose and others too caught up in their own cares to even notice their existence. Every so often, a kind-hearted woman or a small child would drop a few coins in the hats which lay in front of them on the icy sidewalk. Some people, feeling particularly generous, would even pull out a bill or two from their wallets and drop them into the beggars’ hats and then continued their walking.

Today was not a bad day for begging. The men were able to collect enough for a good meal at the coffee shop down the street and a few candles to light up their shelter in the alley (胡同) behind the train station. As the crowd began to die down, they started to pack up their bundles and head for their evening shelter.

Just as they were getting ready to leave the street corner, they noticed a man walking toward them. He was obviously a wealthy man — they could tell that from the finely tailored business suit he was wearing and the gold watch chain adorned (装饰) his left pocket.

The first beggar looked at the second and whispered with excitement, “He’s coming our way!

The two tried not to look directly at the man as he stepped closer to them, but they couldn’t help staring at him as he reached into his pocket and took something out.

“Thunk” was the only sound they heard as what looked like a piece of hard candy, wrapped carefully in tissue paper hit each of their waiting hats. The rich man turned and continued on his way, not making a backward glance.

“How insulting!” said the first beggar, as soon as the rich man was out of sight. “He could have easily left us a few coins or a spare bill, but he played a joke on us with a piece of rock candy.”

He looked at the wrapped offering with disgust. “Who does he think we are — children? There’s no way we can even eat this — we have no teeth.”

The beggar picked up the object with the very tips of his fingers and threw it into the gutter (排水沟). He watched as it floated a few yards in the stream of muddy water and disappeared into the gutter at the end of the street. Then, he gathered up his things and walked away.

The second beggar looked down at the morsel in his hat, then at his departing friend. His first thought was to toss the donation in the trash can under the street light. But his second thought made him change his mind.

“I haven’t had anything like this for ages,” he thought. “I can’t chew it, but I can suck on it for a while, and the sweet juice will stay in my mouth for a long time. How nice of that man to offer me something so sweet!”

He opened the paper eagerly, then paused as his hands touched the inside. “Maybe I should save it for another time,” he thought. “It won’t spoil, and I could eat it later when I’m really hungry.”

The beggar paused for a moment, then he said aloud, “He wanted me to have it anyway. I might as well enjoy it now.”

With that, he unfolded the paper, but to his surprise, there was no hard rock candy inside. Instead, into his fingers fell a shiny white pearl worth thousands of dollars.

A cyclic(周期的) drop in the sun’s radiation can cause unusually cold winters in parts of North America and Europe, scientists say, a finding that could improve long-range forecasts and help countries prepare for snowstorms.

Scientists have known for a long time that the sun has an 11-year cycle during which radiation measured by sunspots on the surface reaches a peak then falls. But explaining a clear link to weather has proved harder.

“Our research confirms the observed link between solar change and regional winter climate,” lead author Sarah Ineson of the UK Met Office told the reporters in an email. The study was published in the journal Nature Geoscience on Monday.

Her team focused on data from the recent solar minimum during 2008-2010, a period of unusual calm for the sun and extreme winters in the United States and parts of Europe that shut down air travel and disrupted(使混乱) business.

The researchers found that a reduction in ultraviolet(UV, 紫外线) radiation from the sun can affect high-altitude wind patterns in the Northern Hemisphere(半球),causing cold winters.

“While UV levels won’t tell us what the day-to-day weather will do, they provide the exciting prospect of improved forecasts for winter conditions for months and even years ahead. These forecasts play an important role in long-term possibility planning,” Ineson, a climate scientist, said.

Ineson and colleagues from Imperial College London and the University of Oxford used satellite data that more accurately measures UV radiation from the sun and found a much greater change than previously thought.

They found that in years of low activity, unusually cold air forms high in the atmosphere over the tropics(回归线). This causes a redistribution(重新分配) of heat in the atmosphere, making easterly winds that bring freezing weather and snow storms to northern Europe and the United States and milder weather to Canada and the Mediterranean.

When solar UV radiation is stronger, the opposite occurs.

Ineson’s team used the data in a complex computer model that simulates (模拟) long-term weather patterns. The model successfully reproduced what scientists have observed happening in the upper atmosphere during changes in solar radiation.

More study was needed, though. A key uncertainly in the experiment lay in the satellite data used, because it covers only a few years. “So questions remain concerning both accuracy and also applicability to other solar cycles,” she said.

50. The new finding claims cold winters in the North Hemisphere can be caused by________.

A. a sharp rise in the amount of sunspot

B. the new finding could improve long-term weather prediction

C. the years 2008-2010 were a period when the sun’s radiation fell

D. extreme winters affected air travel and business in parts of Europe

53. What will happen if the sun turns into years of high activity according to the finding?

A. Canada and the Mediterranean will have milder weather.

B. Burning hot weather will appear in northern Europe and the United States.

Women are friends, I once would have said, when they totally love and support and trust each other, and tell each other the secrets of their souls, and run no questions asked to help each other, and tell unpleasant truths to each other (no, you can't wear that dress unless you lose ten pounds first) when unpleasant truths must be told.

A woman friend is a friend all the way, I once would have said, but now I believe that’s a narrow point of view. For the friendships I have and the friendships I see are conducted at many levels of closeness, serve many different functions, meet different needs and range from the soul sisters to the most casual playmates.

Consider these varieties of friendship:

Convenience friends  They’ll lend us their cups for a party. They’ll drive our kids to school when we’re sick…As we will do for them. But we don’t, with convenience friends, ever come too close or tell too much; we maintain our public face and emotional distance.

Special-interest friends  These friendships aren’t close, and they needn’t involve kids or cups. Their value lies in some interest commonly shared. And so we may have an office friend or a yoga friend or a tennis friend. “I’d say that what we’re doing is doing together, not being together.

Historical friends  We all have a friend who knew us when maybe way back in Miss Meltzer’s second grade, when our family lived in that three-room flat. The years have gone by and we’ve gone separate ways and we’ve little in common now, but we’re still a close part of each other’s past.

Crossroads friends  Crossroads friends form powerful links, links strong enough to last with just communication of a once-a-year letter at Christmas. And out of respect for those crossroads years, for those dreams and dreams we once shared, we will always be friends.

Cross-generational friends  The friendship exists across generations in what one woman calls her daughter–mother and her mother-daughter relationships.

There are medium(中等的), pretty good, and such good friends indeed, and these friendships are decided by their level of closeness. For example, we might tell a medium friend that yesterday we had a fight with our husband. And we might tell a pretty good friend that this fight with our husband made us so mad that we slept on the sofa. And we might tell a such good friend that the reason why we got so mad in that fight that we slept on the sofa — he had a love affair with that girl who works in his office. But it’s only to our very best friends that we’re willing to tell all, to tell what’s going on with that girl in his office.

The best of friends, I still believe, totally love and support and trust each other, and tell each other the secrets of their souls, and tell unpleasant truths to each other when they must be told.
