Housing policies differ from school to school.Students might be able to choose whatever housing they can find.Or they might have to live in a dormitory(寝室),at least for the first year.

Dorms come in all sizes.A building may house a small number of students or many hundreds. Some have suites. Each suite has several bedrooms,a common living area and a bathroom.Six or more students may live in one suite.Other dorms have many rooms along a common hallway, usually with two students in each room.

Many students say dormitories provide the best chance to get to know other students. Also, dorms generally cost less than apartments or other housing not owned by the school.

Most colleges and universities offer singlesex dorms, but usually males and females live in the same building. They might live on the same floors and share the same common bathrooms. But,in most cases, they may live in the same room only if they are married.

At many schools, male students can join fraternities (联谊会,兄弟会) and females can join sororities (女生联谊会,姊妹会).These are mainly social organizations but members may also be able to live in their fraternity or sorority house.

Edward Spencer is the associate vicepresident(副主席) for student affairs at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. He says it is important to understand the rules of the building in which you will live.

He advises students to ask questions before they decide about their housing. For example:If a student requires a special diet, will the school provide for it?

Virginia Tech, for example, had a ban against candles in dorms. But it changed that policy to let students light candles for religious purposes.

Society is a web of relationships, requiring all parties(群体) to work together to create something good. What makes society work best are effective(有效的) relationships that are based on mutual(相互的) understanding. If you understand what people want and why they want it, you can usually find a way to make progress together.

High-quality relationships make people happy. Some people living in the poorest communities have almost nothing but turn out to be the happiest because they share a life together. If effective relationships are working, happiness is always possible.[ http://wx.jtyjy.com/]

Here are some simple tips for building effective relationships.

Listen to and try to understand others’ positions and feelings. Listening in itself can lead to understanding, and if you understand someone else fully, then you know how to work better with him or her.

Openly express your needs and feelings. Sometimes we expect people—particularly those close to us at home or work—to understand what we want and to give us what we need intuitively(凭直觉地). However, people are so complicated and so different that even when they have lived together for 60 years, they can still surprise each other. So we need to say what we need and to express how we feel.

In order to make our relationships more effective, we should treat ourselves and other people with respect. Respect is one of the most important elements of any good relationship.

Finally, learn to face differences correctly. Learning this takes time and can be uncomfortable. However, if we can try to remove differences in an effective way, we are more likely to build exciting and satisfying relationships with others.

By doing these things you may discover that the happiness you long for is much closer than you thought.

Born in a fishing village in Japan,Fujiyama, 25,recalls a childhood dominated(受控的) by health concerns.Doctors told his parents that he had a hole in his heart and “they didn’t think I had a lot longer to live”.But during a later visit to the doctor, his family learned the hole had closed.“Somehow I was cured and I became a normal kid,” Fujiyama says.“And I had a second chance.”

During his second year at the University of Mary Washington,he volunteered in Honduras with a campus group and was struck by the extreme poverty he saw—barefoot children collecting cans and sleeping in the streets.Fujiyama realized he could help give other children their own second chance.

Today, his organization,Students Helping Honduras, brings education and community projects to children and families in need.

He started by telling his friends about his experience and collecting spare change at his two campus jobs.“When I had my very first meeting, only two people showed up,”he says.“I knew I had to keep fighting.”He persuaded his younger sister,Cosmo,to join the cause.“She’s dynamite(会引起轰动的人),”he says.“When she talks in front of a crowd, she can move mountains.Knowing that she was behind it,I knew I could do anything.”Since 2006,the siblings organization has grown to 25 campuses(大学校园) and raised more than $750,000 to fund projects, including the construction of two schools and the establishment of scholarships to help young women attend college.

Fujiyama says students are deeply committed to the organization. They raise money and then travel to Honduras to help build houses. While Fujiyama spends his summers in Honduras working alongside volunteers,he spends a large portion(一部分) of the year on the road visiting colleges to raise funds.Cosmo Fujiyama,23,lives in Honduras full time to coordinate (协调) the group’s building efforts on the ground.

Students Helping Honduras is working with community members of Siete de Abril to build a new village. Many of the families lost their belongings in Hurricane Mitch in 1998.A lot of them didn’t have access to clean water or health care, and they didn’t have a school.Fujiyama’s group helped build 44 homes in the village named “Sunshine Village”.The organization is also raising funds to build a water tower,an ecofriendly sanitation system and a library.

Is it necessary for a young man to have an apartment as a prerequisite(先决条件) for marriage? Housing has become a major obstacle(障碍) for Chinese young men hoping to start a family. China may breed a new group of bachelors, men caught in the trap of unaffordable houses.

Since early 2009, the housing market has once again become a hot pot at boiling point. Even with allowance(津贴) and special government policies, home prices in China's first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are riding the crest(波峰)of a rising wave. According to the "2010 China Marital Status Report" released on Dec 15, 2010, about 70 percent of women interviewed said that housing, a stable income and some savings were the main requirements for marriage.

From the report, we can see that housing is given top priority(优先权) and that women see an apartment as essential(必不可少的) to show that the man is responsible and can provide for his family.

Personality and morals lay outside the top three matrimonial (婚姻的)requirements. Some women and their families hold the traditional position and take it for granted that the home issue should be the man's responsibility, which doesn’t agree with the contemporary independent spirit of women and gender equality. These marriage values reflect the fact that many women consider marriage another form of "social welfare".

Things may be different overseas. Social housing, provided by European authorities, offer the less wealthy people their own piece of real estate. Such housing is usually apartments in tall buildings with 10 or more floors on the outskirts of town, whose main advantage is the low rents.

For many Americans, houses don't pose an obstacle to getting married. They often buy a house after the wedding, because more and more people are reconsidering their real estate worship, and going back to a more rational(理性的) mode of consumption.

In Japan, renting is the custom for newly married young couples. Few young couples can afford to purchase property. Up to 67.1 percent of young couples choose to rent. Generally speaking, renters account for most people younger than 40 in Japan.

Young people should be free to enjoy being young, without the huge pressure of trying to buy property. Society should help create an environment for them to grow up. Don't let the poor bachelor group become a suffering layer(层) of our society.

   A. urban areas       B. rural areas(乡下)       C. suburbs                 D. downtown areas

63. Why do many women take housing as one of the main requirements for marriage?

   A. Because they can’t afford a house.

   B. Because they enjoy their social welfare.

   C. Because their families want them to marry men with houses.

   D. Because they think it’s a symbol of the men’s sense of responsibility.

64. The author uses the examples of European countries, America and Japan to show that __________?

One day, Jack threw some papers on my desk. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said, and left. I had made just one small change. But it’s not that I hadn’t been warned. My colleagues had said he was responsible for the resignations(辞职) of the two previous sectaries. As the weeks went by, I came to look down on Jack.

After another of his episodes(片段) had left me in tears I stormed into his office. “what?” he said suddenly. “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong for me to allow it to continue,” I said. Jack smiled nervously, “Susan, I make you a promise that I will be a friend. I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness.”

Jack avoided me the rest of the week, and never questioned my work again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left some on his desk. One day, however, Jack visited me in the hospital and silently handed me a bundle with several bulbs inside. “Tulips(郁金香),” he said. I smiled, not understanding. “If you plant them when you get home, they’ll come up next spring. I think you will be there to see them when they come up. Next spring you will see the colours I picked out for you.” Tears clouded my eyes and he left. I have seen those red and white striped(有条纹的) tulips push through the soil every spring for over ten years now. This past September the doctor declared me cured.
