There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外部的) result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language – all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they go through new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to be faced with the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow.

These feelings of insecurity and self – doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

A.face difficulties and take up challenges

A.a new way of taking risks

B.a new system of adapting to change

C.a new method of finding ourselves

D.a new approach to experiencing the world

71.For personal growth, the author may not support __________. .

A.curiosity and more chances

B.being quick in self – adaptation

C.avoidance of internal fears and doubts

D.open – minded to new experiences

Discover World Heritage(遗产)

Heritage is treasure from the past—what we live with today and what we pass on to future generations. To preserve it, UNESCO safeguards hundreds of natural and cultural World Heritage sites around the world.

Here are 5 World Heritage sites:

Historic Centre of Rome

Founded, according to legend(传说), by Romulus and Remus in 753 BC, Rome was first the centre of the Roman Republic, then of the Roman Empire, and it became the capital of the Christian world in the 4th century.

Ancient City of Damascus

Founded in 3,000 B.C., Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. In the Middle Ages, it was the centre of a splendid craft industry, specializing in swords . The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history.

Old Havana

Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a modern city, its old centre remains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical(新古典主义的) monuments.

Ancient City of Ping Yao

Ping Yao, founded in the 14th century, shows the evolution(演变) of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries. Of special interest are the splendid buildings associated with banking, for which Ping Yao was the major centre for the whole of China in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Rainforests of the Atsinanana

The Rainforests of the Atsinanana are extremely important for keeping ongoing ecological processes necessary for the survival of Madagascar’s unique biodiversity(生物多样性), which reflects the island’s geological history. Having completed its separation from all other land masses more than 60 million years ago, Madagascar’s plant and animal life evolved in isolation(孤立).

As we know, the earth’s climate has changed over time. The present rate of climate change depends, in large part, on human activities. Today, people all over the world are making everyday choices that help the environment. Small actions matter and they all make a difference. In other words, climate change is your business.

A woman in Nicaragua buys fluorescent(荧光的) light bulbs that are 80 percent more energy-saving than traditional ones. Many governments are now subsidizing energy-saving lights to encourage people to turn to them. Consumers are discovering that the new-generation bulbs help them save money in the long run.

Agriculture accounts for about 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions(排放), and transporting the food around adds to the environmental cost. There is a team of young vegetable growers in the United Kingdom who want to encourage kids to start planting their own fruit and vegetables.

A young lawyer wearing business clothes rides her bicycle to work in a large U.S. city. She’s been biking to work every day for the past two years and says it’s a lot easier than many people think. A recent study found that more Americans bike or walk to work today than before.

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. One should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

Men often discover their similarity to each other by the common love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond(纽带)of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

A good book is often the best container of a life preserving the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which become our steady companions and comforters.

Books are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay(腐朽), but good books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago.

The great and good do not die, even in this world. Preserved in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect(智者)to which one still listens.
