If people work to meet their needs,it would be good to know what these needs are. They are very simple.Dr.Maslow has suggested that people have only five needs.Every one has them, and everyone spends his or her life trying to satisfy them.Although we may try to satisfy our needs in different ways,we all are trying to satisfy the same needs. In a way,it is these needs, which are common to all people, that make us human. They seem to be a basic part of human nature.

The needs, which occur in the order shown below, can briefly be described as follows:

1.The Physiological Needs—Our needs for the things that keep our bodies alivefood, water, rest, air, elimination, etc. These needs come first. We must meet them or we will die.

2.The Safety Needs—First we need to stay alive, and then we need to be safe. There are two kinds of safety needs:the need to be physically safe and the need to be psychologically safe or secure.

3.The Belongingness Needs—Once we are alive and safe,we then try to satisfy our social need,a need to be with and accepted by other people. We discover our need for love.

4.The Esteem Needs—After our first three needs are fairly well met,we try to satisfy a fourth need. This is a need for recognition, respect, reputation. The need has two parts:self esteem (thinking well of ourselves) and the esteem of others.

5.The selfactualization (自我实现) Needs—The highest need of man is to actualize himself,to achieve his full potential,to become all that he might be.This need is one that no one ever satisfies completely, partly because we are too busy trying to satisfy our lower needs.

If Dr.Maslow is correct, those are the things we are after. Our work, rest, playwhatever we do—is done in an effort to meet one or more of those needs.

My mom is always at work and my sisters are never around,so I have nothing to do.My house is boring. The train lets me escape and explore.

I have been taking the train for five years.I’ve learned that it’s fast and convenient.I live about two miles from the Blue Line Imperial station.I like taking the train because it gives me freedom.

My favorite place to go is downtown.I take the train to Macy’s Plaza in front of the 7th Street Station to do some shopping at Borders or Victoria’s Secret,or to get something to eat at the food court. With 25 cents, you can take the DASH bus from the station to get to the Fashion District.Since I like making accessories (首饰) like earrings,I love going there  because of all me deals on jewelry supplies.I also go to the American Apparel factory because the clothes there are cheaper and the store is huge.

I take the train to the Museum of Contemporary Art with friends on the first Sunday of every month since we can get in for free.We tour around the museum and get to do an art project at the end.I like going to the museum because there are a lot of wonderful things.

The cool thing about the train is that it connects to other train lines, which lets you see different parts of the city. The Gold Line runs from Union Station northeast to Pasadena and now east to East L.A.The Red Line goes from downtown to Hollywood. The Purple Line goes from Union Station to Koreatown and the Green Line goes from Norwalk to several beaches. When I don’t know how to get somewhere,I go to mta.net,type in my starting point and end point and get times and routes.I hardly ever get lost.

Officials in South Africa are trying to make sure they can solve an unusual problem in the 2010 World Cup Finals—baboonjacking (狒狒打劫).

For those who don’t know what this is,just ask any person from Cape Town. They will tell you that the local baboons like to enter cars and houses in search of food and drink. One special monkey,Fred, has become quite famous.Mark Duffy, leader of a group tracking Fred and his 26 strong partners, said,“Every day,it happens. He’ll hit four or five cars in about five minutes. The way Fred operates is to open car doors looking for food and drink. He also normally takes a handbag.” Mr Duffy had a warning for anyone who meets with Fred:“Don’t try to get the bag back.” This is good advice for the thousands of soccer supporters.

The Cape Town government is taking the baboon problem very seriously. They want to make sure the World Cup is a wonderful event for everyone. They are worried about more obvious problems like pickpockets  (小偷)  or rude people. The last thing they need is for soccer fans to be attacked or bitten by baboons. They have already spent over US $650,000 trying to protect the city from the baboons. Many soccer fans may not know how dangerous the baboons can be.They have a powerful bite that would mean hospital treatment.

When writer Nicholas Carr began researching his book on whether the Internet is bad for our minds,he restricted (限制) his online access.

His new book “The Shallows:What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains”  suggests the latest technology makes us less able to think deeply.Cart found he couldn’t concentrate and that he couldn’t work on the book while staying online.

“So,I was only checking my email a couple of times a day rather than every 45 seconds.I found those types of things really did make a difference,” he said.

After at first feeling uncomfortable with his sudden loss of online connection, within a couple of weeks,Carr was able to stay concentrated on one task for a longer period.

Carr wrote a 2008 Atlantic magazine piece that asked a question  “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”  and wanted to dig deeper into how the Internet changes our minds. His book examines the history of reading and the science of how using different media (媒体) changes our brains.Exploring how society changed from an oral tradition to the printed word and to the Internet,he explains how the brain adjusts itself to new information sources.

Reading on the Internet has greatly changed how we use our brains,he writes.Facing a lot of text, photos, videos, music, text messages, emails and blogs, our minds have become used to skimming (略读) and scanning (跳读) information. As a result,we have developed sharper skills at making fast decisions,Carr says. But now most of us infrequently read books, long essays or articles that would help us concentrate,Carr writes.

Carr says for centuries books helped focus our minds on one topic at a time.He has a suggestion for those who feel web surfing has left them unable to concentrate—slow down, turn off the Internet and practice the skills of being deep in thought.

Every child should have a solid science education whether they want to be the next Albert Einstein or Michael Jordan.Science is all around us,it is everywhere, reaching everything that we do.The  “we”  in that last statement includes children.Children that understand how science plays a role in our everyday lives have a wonderful foundation (基础) for success in life.

Children can learn science at any age really. The earlier they start the better. The best way for kids to learn is through play and repetition. There are wonderful science toys for preschool science activities. With play being the best way kids learn,it only makes sense then to introduce toys to them that encourage understanding science.Children love to use their imagination to have fun and to help them understand the world around them.So play is a wonderful time to be introducing science to them.Think of the games that we used to play:Don’t Spill the Beans,Don’t Break the Ice,the Telephone Game,Lincoln Logs, each of these games has science behind it.

Children are by nature curious (好奇的) as they feel out the world, trying to make sense of what is around them.Science feeds that curiosity that they have.It is a hunger that needs to be encouraged and satisfied.Finding these toys is not as hard as one would think. To make sure that you get good quality toys, visit science toy shops online. These are the best places to find unique (独特的) science toys such as 3D space projectors,or Hydro Greenhouses.

Help your children appreciate the world around them by understanding the world around them. This way, they understand how we are all connected together.Children will not only question the world, but be able to come up with answers to those questions on their own.Science is life.

After suffering through many months of unemployment  (失业),my wife and I moved this week from Colorado to Ohio, where she was starting a new job.Not knowing anybody there,we were pretty concerned about how we’d get our entire home unloaded (卸下) without killing ourselves.

We made a phone call to hire (临时雇用) a couple of college students to help with all the heavy lifting once we got there. But one neighbor after another stopped by to help us.WhatHave_we_moved_to_some_other_countryMaybe_we’ve_died_and_gone_to_heaven!

Unloading actually became fun and joy because there were so many wonderful new friends to help when we worked. The more people helped, the easier the work became. We were afraid the job might take days for the two of us alone, but it was finished in a few hours. Many total strangers would either walk by the sidewalk or drive by to ask us if we were moving in.Many were happy that this old house that had sat empty for so long was coming to life again. We were invited to an outdoor meal yesterday by neighbors on the same street.

All the time,my brain was resting on this new sense of hope that people can be so friendly to strangers.Among all the conversation were lots of offers to help each other in all kinds of ways. It’s wonderful to live in such a kind little town.I feel so grateful to be here, and wish the rest of the world could see how an entire community can model  (做榜样) what it’s like to help each other.
