We’ve found the simplest, most powerful steps you can take---without adding more jobs to your to-do list or expenses to your monthly budget---to protect your heart naturally.

It can be as simple as laughing at a bad situation rather than getting angry. It means going for walks after dinner, not watching game shows. It means giving an apple for dessert rather than apple pie, or spending 15 minutes sipping a cup of home-made cocoa curled up on the sofa with your family instead of watching the 11 o’clock news with a bag of chips. It’s doing a 5-minutes-a-day strength-training program while the coffee boils in the morning or taking a 3-second silent pause when the “you’ve got mail” alert sounds on your computer.

Here is the plan that lets you take them all on and win.

1. Focus on Small Changes for Big Results

Fast, simple diet can cut cholesterol (胆固醇) by 30 percent. A 5-minutes-a-day weight-training program can replace 10 years’ worth of lost muscle tissue.

2. Eat Fresh Foods

Fresh, whole foods don’t have to cost more or take more time to prepare than the packaged stuff. These wholesome, delicious foods --- fresh fruits and veggies, grains, fish, meats, dairy products, and even soy---not only taste good, they also protect your heart by greatly reducing blood fats, driving down raised blood sugar, fighting destructive free radicals(自由基).

3. Find Joy

Accumulated researches link impatience and complaints with poor heart health; in contrast, forgiveness, friends, and optimism are linked with healthier hearts. Do you have a heart- threatening personality type? Find out and learn how to live a more joyful life.

64. As is suggested in the passage, you will keep a healthy heart if you ___________.

A. often dine out with friends in restaurants

B. overlook unimportant bad happenings

C. watch late evening news eating a bag of chips

D. have packaged foods instead of wholesome foods

65. ___________ person is more likely to have a poor heart.

A. A bad-tempered                                                     B. A cold-hearted

C. An ill-mannered                                                     D. A broad-minded

66. The best title should be ___________.

A. Economical Ways of Keeping Fit

B. The Path to a Healthy Heart

C. Making a Difference --- Small Changes

D. Fresh Foods---Key to a Healthy Heart

As students across the country have their yearly flu shots(打流感疫苗), doctors across the world are preparing against a possible outbreak of bird flu that few current vaccines(疫苗)will guard against. The likelihood of a bird flu spreading among humans is very high, the World Health Organization warned recently. European countries worry about bird flu very much, since many migratory birds(候鸟)start to fly back from the North.

There are at least 15 different types of bird flu virus around the world. The possible outbreak may be caused by a virus known as H5N1. It was first found to have spread from a bird to a human in Hong Kong in 1997. In addition to Asia, this bird flu has been found among birds in Romania, Turkey, Russia and Kazakhstan.

The outbreak in 1997 in Hong Kong was quickly controlled at a cost of 18 people ill and six dead. About 1.5 million chickens were collected in an effort to remove the source of the virus. But scientists say that the virus can change itself rapidly. Also, if the virus mixes with the human flu virus, it could be spread through person-to-person contact in the same way as ordinary human flu is spread. Bird flu can cause fever, coughing, sore throats and muscle aches in humans. With the introduction of vaccines, flu is not as deadly as it used to be. But throughout history it was a huge cause of death around the world. The outbreak of Spanish flu in 1918-19 killed about 40 to 50 million people worldwide.

Currently there is no vaccine against bird flu that can be used on humans. Scientists are working to develop one. This will probably take several months to complete and may not be ready in time to stop a widespread outbreak of the disease.

68 The author mainly tells us _____ in the passage.

A. people all over the world are worried about the outbreak of bird flu

C. The Spanish flu in 1918-19 was deadly because it was spread from person to person.

D. People infected by bird flu suffer from fever, coughing, sore throats and muscle aches.

70 We can infer from the passage that _______.

A. in several months, a widespread outbreak of the disease can be stopped

B. the bird flu in 1997 in Hong Kong was soon stopped

C. as time goes on, bird flu is becoming more deadly

D. it takes scientists great effort to stop the possible outbreak

Golden Bridge joins the beautiful city of San Francisco with the suburbs to the north . Each day, about one hundred thousand cars cross the bridge, taking people to and from the city. More than half of them cross the bridge during the morning and evening rush hours , as a result, the trip is not pleasant.

Now, however , there is at least one group of happy commuters(经常往来市区的人). These are the people who travel under the bridge instead of on it. They go to work by boat and enjoy it so much that most of them say they will never go by car again.

The ferry they take is the large, quiet, comfortable “Golden Gate”. Commuters can enjoy the sun on the boat. In the morning, they can have breakfast in the coffee shop, and in the evening they can have a drink in the boat while they are looking at San Francisco’s famous scene and the nearby hills.

The trip takes only thirty minutes and is not expensive. But best of all, being on an boat seems to make people feel more friendly towards each other. Two commuters who met on the “Golden Bridge” have already got married.

Because the boat has been so successful, there are plans to use other still larger boats. There is also a plan for a high-speed boat that will make the trip in only fifteen minutes.  “The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful,” says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral(道德) freedom.

A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whoever the gods would destroy they first make them mad.” “Keep cool,” says Webster, “anger is not argument.” “Be calm in arguing,” says George Herbert, “for fierceness(狂怒) makes error a fault.”

To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger,” says Pythagoras, “brings with folly and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Self-control is man’s last and greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

WASHINGTON ,Jan. 21—“I want to be a builder. I want to build houses and buildings for the homeless,” said Aman Efrem ,a third-grade student from Hearst Elementary in Washington. D.C. Statistically, air travel is by far the safest way to tavel, and you can make flying even safer, just by following these simple rules. As your chances of being involved in an air accident are practically nil (零), many of these tips concern what you should and shouldn't do to make your journey safer when you are airborne (升空的).

Fly on non-stop routes

Most accidents occur during the takeoff, climb, descent and landing phases of a flight, so flying non-stop reduces your exposure to these complex procedures.

Choose larger aircarft.

Although small aircraft have very good safety records, those with more than 30 passenger seats are designed to comply (遵守) with much stricter regulations and are tested more regularly to make sure they still comply. Also, in the unlikely event of a serious accident, larger aircraft provide a better opportunity for passenger survival.

Pay attention to the pre-flight safety briefing

The information may seem repetitious (重复的), but it's worth listening to the flight attendants. And even if you've flown before, it doesn't mean you know everything about the aircraft you're on, such as the location of the closest emergency exit.

Store things safely

Never put very heavy articles in the overhead storage bins. They may fall out when someone opens the bin and cause injury. Also, the bin may not be able to hold heavier objects during turbulence (气流).

Keep our seat belt fastened while you are seated

Cabin crew always tell you this, but it's important. You would be seriously injured if the plane hits unexpected turbulence. Always fasten your seat belt if you are told to. The general rule of flying is this: If you are told to do something, do it first and ask questions later.

Let the flight attendant pour your hot drinks

Flight attendants are trained to handle hot drinks like coffee or tea in a crowded aisle on a moving aircraft, so allow them to pour the drink and hand it to you. Never ask to take a coffee pot from one of them.

61. What is the overall reason for these air safety tips?

A. What to do in the event of a crash.

B. How to avoid turbulence.

C. How to improve safety while you are flying.

D. How to avoid injury.

62. The underlined word "those" in the second tip refers to _______.

A.smaller planes B. passengers C. larger aircraft D. safety records

B. general safety advice

C. walking around the plane

D. pouring hot drinks

64. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Larger planes have more safety checks and are safe in an accident.

B. Take-offs are safer on non-stop flights than landings.

C. Every aircraft is different, so the safety procedures may be different.

D. Seat belts should be worn to protect against turbulence.

65. The best title of the passage should be _______.

A. The Safest Way to Travel

B. Air Safety Tips

C. Non-stop Routes

D. How to Fly a Plane

Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets. The tickets cost only $ 0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot (积累奖金) in history.

More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80. The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million. But that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.

Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have.

But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized (合法化的) gambling. Some critics (批评家) note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts (成瘾者) who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.

Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice (恶习), under the name of social progress.

No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.

C. win the Pennsylvania D. save every cent

58. All the following opinions correspond with those of the critics EXCEPT _________.

A. lotteries are as bad as legalized gambling

B. some poor people spend money unreasonably on lotteries

C. lotteries cause problems like addiction and unwise investment

D. the profits from lotteries used for senior-citizen education is social progress

59. The main idea of the passage is that __________.

A. lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys them

B. playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock market

C. popularity of the lottery in America causes disagreement

D. lotteries are just legalized vice

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

45. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by _______.

A. road conditions                   B. the speed of modern life

C. the behavior of the drivers         D. the large number of cars

46. In the writer’s opinion, ________.

A. drivers should avoid traffic jams

B. strict traffic rules are badly needed

C. unskillful drivers should be punished

D. drivers should show road politeness properly

47. The underlined word “give-and-take” in the last paragraph means “______”.

A. politeness and impoliteness

B. good manners and bad manners

C. offering help to others as much as possible

D. willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes

48. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Road politeness                       B. Traffic problems

C. Bad manners on the road              D. Good divers and bad drivers

Online games, social-networking Web sites, and chat rooms are empowering and motivating(刺激) for teens and help with their development. When adults look at teens today, they think what they are doing is different and seem to be wasting a lot of time. And those activities seem quite foreign. But when we look closely at what kids are doing, it’s not much more different than what their parents did. They are hanging out with their friends, finding romantic partners, and trying to identify themselves.

Today’s teens are being raised with technologies that allow them to have self-directed learning on their own terms, on their own time, and without the restrictions of a classroom setting. This gives the teens a feeling of freedom. This is very different from how kids learn in school when they are handed a set body of knowledge required to master by their teachers.

Teens were motivated to engage online because they were either driven by interest or friendship. And there are some specific findings according to a research:

One major finding is that there is a generation gap in how parents and teens view the teen's online activities. Adults think the activities draw their attention from school work and are left in the dark about what their teens are doing online. Teens, on the other hand, understand the value of the Internet and are motivated to participate.

Another finding shows that teens are not taking full advantage of the Internet. They are using the social networks to chat and post photos and make friends, which are important to their development, but they are not making use of other existing opportunities to learn about astronomy, foreign languages, and other subjects only a few clicks away.

Teens are also improving their social skills online by learning the basic social and technical skills needed to interact in today's digital world.

Pressure from those of the same age also takes on a new role online. Teens are reporting that they are more motivated by those of their age online with public spaces that allow the teens to interact and provide feedback(反馈) to one another.

While teens are using the Internet for both social and intellectual development, they are also facing significant challenges on how to manage their relationships online.

53. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Teen’s on line activities.                 B. Making use of Internet.

C. The power of online activities.           D. Technology and teens.

54. Which of the following best describes how the writer thinks about teens’ online activities?

A. Supportive.         B. Objective.        C. Understandable.    D. Concerned.

55. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?

A. Internet is a source of learning not as important as classrooms for teens.

B. Teens have no trouble dealing with online relationship.

C. Teens need to learn more effectively online.

D. Parents should also learn to use Internet.

56. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “restriction”?

A. freedom.     B. limitation.         C. provision.     D. inconvenience.
