12.FORMER French president Charles de Gaulle once famously said that he couldn't possibly govern a country that had 246 different kinds of cheese.
As it turns out,he had it easy.
The variety of French cheeses,in fact,cannot compare to that of pastries (糕点) in the US.The country has always embraced (欢迎) foreign bread-the Danish pastry,the French croissant (羊角面包) and Viennese whirls,for example.But it has now become home to many new flour and butter creations.
It all started with the"cronut".Four years ago,New York baker Dominique Ansel mixed two pastries-a French croissant and an American doughnut (甜甜圈)-together into a big,greasy (油腻的) treat.
From there,hybrid foods,containing the best of both worlds,went wild.There was the"megaburgerpizza"-thick burger patties sandwiched between two big pizzas,first made in Japan.A US restaurant called Quality Italian cut a wide,very thin slice of chicken,decorating it with cheese and tomato,and called it a"chicken pizza".When the craze came to the UK,a British cake called a"tart"was mixed with the American chocolate"brownie"cake,resulting in the"townie".
Even crazier than the hybrid foods are the queues of people who want to buy them.Earlier this month,CNN reported that a group of people in San Francisco started lining up outside Mr Holmes Bakehouse at 7am,even at weekends,to get their hands on the latest foodie discovery-the"cruffin".It is a cross between a croissant and a muffin.
The only rule for dishes these days"is that there are no rules",USA Today commented."This anything-goes mentality sees chefs ranging from humble (地位低的),small-town types to some of the biggest names in the industry satisfying their inner mad scientist by serving the craziest combo dishes imaginable."
Maybe it's time to make up your own combo dish.How about"broodles"-bread rolled into noodles and dipped in jam and butter?Better yet,maybe you could just rename a classic.What about Shanghai soup dumplings?You could call them"souplings"!

9.An egg sinks to the bottom if you drop it into a glass of ordinary drinking water but what happens if you add salt? The results arc very interesting and can teach you some fun facts about density(密度).
     What you'll  need:
*One egg*Water*Salt*A tall drinking glass
     Instructions:
Pour water into the glass until it is about half full.
Mix in lots of salt (about 6 tablespoons).
Carefully pour in plain water until the glass-is nearly full (be careful not to mix the salt water with the plain water).
Gently lower the egg into the water and watch what happens.
     What's happening?
Salt water is denser than ordinary tap water. The denser the liquid is,the easier it is for an object to float in it.When you lower the egg into the liquid it drops through the normal tap water until it reaches the salt water,at this point the water is dense enough for the egg to float. If you were careful when you added the tap water to the salt water, they will not have mixed, enabling the egg to amazingly float in the middle of the glass.

21.Which of the following is the CORRECT order?B
①Mix in lots of.salt.

C.Nothing will happen.
B.It will sink to the bottom.
D.The result is not known.
23.Why can the egg float in the water according to the passage?C
A.Because ordinary tap water is denser than salt water.
B.Because ordinary tap water is as dense as salt water.
C.Because'the denser the liquid is,the easier it is for an object to float in it.
D.Because the more the liquid there is,the easier it is for an object to float in it.
