The ability to overcome obstacles is a highly regarded value in American culture.Many believe it shows that a person is strong and willing to work hard to achieve goals.Yet some people are shy about discussing personal (41)G.In some cultures,it may even be seen as a sign of weakness to  (42)Jdifficulties.

4.阅读下面短文,按要求完成阅读任务.
It's difficult to find a piece of clothing as widely accepted, worn and loved the world over as jeans. The classic symbol of the American West is now a main item in wardrobe around the world. But why?
The reason for jeans'success has as much as to do with their cultural meaning as their physical construction.
Invented by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis in 1873,jeans were first designed as work wear for laborers on the farms and mines of America's Western states in the late l9th century. They proved extremely comfortable and durable(耐用的)and were soon in high demand.
But the first explosion of jeans into world of casual-wear(便装)had more to do with what jeans had come to symbolize.
When they did start to be worn as casual wear, jeans became a symbol of rebellion-the spirit captured by Marion Brando in his l953 film The Wild One and by James Dean two years later in Rebel Without a Cause,
Jeans were soon banned in schools from coast to coast which only added to the passion with which teenagers embraced them.
But jeans'popularity kept growing also because they put different classes on a level playing field. They were affordable and hard-wearing,looked good worn as well as new,and didn't have to be washed often or ironed at all. They conformed to the body in a way that matched even the most finely tailored clothes. This became especially important for women because then, and now, they paid more attention to fit. This versatility(多用途),the ability to become all things to all people,is the secret to jeans'survival as a wardrobe item.

2.In rainy London,always carry your"brolly"
BIG Ben,the Queen,a plate of ham and eggs-no,no,no.If you're looking for a  symbol of Britain, only one thing passes the test-the umbrella.
Now,I know what you're thinking-we have rain in China and we have umbrellas too.Certainly,I will never forget the way it rained when I lived in Beijing:the sweets became instant rivers and the sky flashed with lightning for hours on end.People dove for cover under bin bags, the shops were emptied of their plastic ponchos(斗篷)within seconds, and I found myself soaked(浸透)from head to foot,my poorly-chosen skirt and T-shirt now totally see-through.This would never have happened in Britain.
For one thing, during my year in Beijing,it only really rained at about 10 times.尊
But although we never get a Beijing-style washout in London, the drizzle(毛毛雨)that does fall is all but constant.Even when the sky is perfectly blue, you can be sure it's going to cloud over and start drizzling again within the hour.
And when it does, there is chaos.Trains stop, drains(下水道)block, and buses break down as if this was the first time the local authorities had seen this wet stuff coming out of the clouds.
So-as with so many things in the UK-it's up to ordinary people to sort themselves out.No self-respecting Briton will ever leave home without his"brolly"-as the umbrella is affectionately(亲切地)known.
A brolly has hundreds of uses, even on rare rain-free days.A real gentleman of London will use his umbrella as a walking stick.A traditional game of cricket can be played using an umbrella as a hat.Nor do you ever have to be afraid of robbers-your umbrella doubles as a defensive weapon.
There is no brolly more British than my own.But it's not from London or Manchester or any where in the UK.It was a gift from my Chinese teacher-in Beijing.
How fitting that my No.l symbol of Brutishness-like almost everything in Britain-was made in China.

20.Every April I am worried-that spring might not occur this year. The landscape y hills, gray sky and gray forest.I felt upset,as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine l5 years ago."Just wait,"a neighbor said."You'll wake up one morning and spring will just be here."
[2]Yes!On May 3 that year I awoke to a surprising green,as if spring were simply a matter of pressing a switch.Hills, sky and forest grew their purples, blues and green. Then there was the old apple tree.It sits on an undeveloped area in my neighborhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. Each spring it blooms and the air becomes  filled with the aroma(香气)of the flowers. When I drive by with my windows rolled down,it gives me the feeling of moving in another world.
[3]One day last year,I set out with tools to prune(修剪)the apple tree.No sooner had I arrived under it than neighbors opened their windows. These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to,but it was as if I had broken into their gardens. One of them was the first to speak."You're not cutting it down, are you?''Another neighbor looked a bit angry."Don't kill it,now,"he shouted.Soon half the neighborhood had joined me under the apple tree.It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people's names…
[4]The apple tree incident turned out to be a good start.Just the other day I saw one of my neighbors at the local store. He remarked how this winter had been especially long and regretted not having seen or spoken to anyone in our neighborhood. And then,he looked at me and said,"        that apple tree again."
