There are various reasons why cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though their
sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their
middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer
sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (诊断), doctors can more easily
recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been
wrongly diagnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modern living, including
heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions
than before.
We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small.
Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the
examination of the blood.
Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not
appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was
correct more than 90 percent of the time. The researchers believe the test may be able to show
cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully.
The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂质). Cancers seem to change
lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the
persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer. The researchers say the new test could
be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.

1. Who will have cancer from the study of the researchers?

A. The young.
B. The middle age and the older.
C. The man.
D. The woman.

B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its
    development。
C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is small
D. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way

3. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Cancers have much to do with something in patients’ blood.
B. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by
    cancer.

   or not.

    conditions.

18     Feeling tired lately? Has a doctor said he can't find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you
to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that
there is nothing wrong with you.
Then, consider this:you might be in a state of subhealth (亚健康).
Subhealth, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and
disease.
According to the investigation (调查) by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of
subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in
management position as well as students around exam time.
Symptoms include a lack of energy,  depression (压抑 ) , slow reactions,  insomnia (失眠),  agitation
(焦虑 ),  and poor memory. ()ther symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waistand legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form
good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should eat more fresh vegetables,
fruits and fish because they are rich in nutritional  (营养的 )  elements- vitamins and trace elements
(微量元素)-that are important
to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause
unhealthy changes in the digestive tract (消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in
avoiding subhealth.
1. According to this passage, which of the following is right?
A. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should stay  home and keep silent.
B. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should go to see a doctor and buy some medicine.
C. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should have  yourself examined in foreign countries.
D. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should find out the reasons and relax yourself.
2. The key to preventing you from falling into a state of subhealth is that you should ______.
A. work hard
B. sleep more
C. form good living habits
D. take more medicine
3. As for food, experts suggested that _____.

"People should have one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective sacrifice that
would help deal with climate change," the world's leading authority on global warming has told The Observer.
Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that
people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.
Pachauri, who was re-elected the panel's chairman for a second six-year term last week, said diet change
was important because of the huge greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and other environmental problems
associated with raising cattle and other animals. "It was relatively easy to change eating habits compared to
changing means of transport," he said.
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation has estimated that meat production ac counts for nearly a
fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These are produced during the production. For example, ruminants
(反刍动物), particularly cows, emit a gas called methane, which is 23 times more effective as a global
warming agent than give off CO2.
Pachauri can expect some opposite responses from the food industry to his advice, though last night he
was given unexpected support by Masterchef presenter and restaurateur John Torode. "I have a little bit and
enjoy it," said Torode. "Too much for any person is bad. But there's a bigger issue here: where the meat
comes from. If we all bought British and stopped buying imported food, we'd save a huge amount of carbon
emissions."
Professor Robert Watson, the chief scientific adviser for the Department for Environment Food and Rural
Affairs, said government could help educate people about the benefits of eating less meat, but it should not
regulate. "Eating less meat would help, there's no question about that," Watson said.
However, Chris Lamb, head of marketing for pig industry group BPEX, said the meat industry had been
unfairly targeted and was working hard to find out which activities had the biggest environmental impact and
reduce them. "Some ideas were contradictory," he said. "For example, one solution to emissions from cattle
and other animals was to keep them indoors, but this would damage animal welfare. Climate change is a very
young science and our view is ther are a lot of simple solutions being proposed."
1. What is directly related to global warming?
A. Consumption of meat.
B. Growth of cattle.
C. Methane from ruminants.
D. Processing of meat.
2. Who holds a view opposite to the others' in the passage?
A. Rajendra Pachauri.
B. John Torode.
C. Robert Watson.
D. Chris Lamb.
3. It is implied in the passage that _____.
A. we should try to keep away from cattle
B. ruminants should not be left outdoors
C. the meat industry will soon close down
D. we must do our duty to save the earth
4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Less meat, slower global warming
B. More animals, more greenhouse gas
C. Less imported food, better our environment
D. Greater diet change, smaller climate change
