14.What is happiness?Different people have different(61)ideas(idea).Some people are rich; they think they are happy.Other people have many friends,so they feel happy.Still others are happy because (62)(theirthey) lives are meaningful.Happiness(63)attracts(attract) everyone. For children, happin ess often means eating something good or (64)playing(play) with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring(65)more(much) delight than meals. And for a scientist,a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction.
There was once a beggar (66)whowas always happy. The king saw him and wondered(67whyhe was so happy while he was so poor(68)However,the king could have whatever he (69)wanted(want); yet he himself was not happy at all. Thus we can see one's happiness doesn't depend on whether he is rich or poor.Happiness is a state of mind.As long as one thinks he's content and (70)satisfied(satisfy),he is happy.

62.their.
63.attracts.
64.playing.
65.more. 根据 than meals可知用much的比较级more.
66.who. There was once a beggar (66)whowas always happy结构可知定语从句的先行词是 a beggar,做从句的主语,所以用.who.
67.why. The king saw him and wondered的谓语动词wondered可知后句应该是"为什么他那么穷却很快乐",所以引导词用why.
68.However.考查连词.he was so happy while he was so poor(68)和,the king could have whatever he (69)wanted(want); yet he himself was not happy at all.
69.wanted.
70.satisfied.

My father,however,did not agree.
My room is small; however,it's comfortable.
He said that it was so; he was mistaken,however.

3.The plan had been made to create a beautiful nature park with a large man-made lake on the outer parts of the city of Zhengzhou,the capital of Henan Province.However,thanks to a terrible trick played by nature,what the officials have ended up with,is a natural sandy mess!
The government wanted to create a beautiful place where people of this busy industrial city could come to relax.But things did not quite turn out that way---shortly after digging up thousands of tons of sand,the underground water dried up.As a result,the dry sand has changed into a Sahara-like desert.While official reports show that the sand is piled up to 10meters high,some people say that it is ten times more or about a 100-feet high in certain areas.
If that is not bad enough,the sand hills that now spread across an area the size of four football fields,have influenced the environment.What's worse is that on windy days,the dry sand moves into the city center,making it almost impossible to drive and forcing people to wear face masks and protective eyewear to prevent the sand from getting into their eyes,nose,and mouth.
In an act of trying to keep the sand and provide the illusion(幻想) of green fields, the officials have even tried covering it with a green plastic netting. However, that has not done much to improve the terrible situation!
As you can imagine,many of Zhengzhou's residents are upset by the disaster.They think that desert wasteland that looks nothing like the green landscape they were promised,has resulted in polluting their pleasant city environment.Some think it is even stopping businessmen from coming to the city.

4.Last week I visited one of my old neighborhoods in Washington D.C.I had not been there for twenty years and as I walked along the street,my mind was flooded by memories of the past.I saw the old apartment building where I had lived and the playground where I had played.As I viewed these once familiar surroundings,images of myself as a child there came to mind.However,what I saw and what I remembered were not the same.I sadly realized that the best memories are those left untouched.
My old apartment building,as I remember,was bright and alive.It was more than just a place to live.It was a movie house,a space station,or whatever my young mind could imagine.I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement.This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark,and there were so many things there to hide among.There was a small river in the back of the building.We would go there to lie in the shade of trees and enjoy ourselves.
However,what I saw was completely different.The apartment building was now in disrepair.What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in.The windows were all broken.The once clean walls were covered with dirty marks.The river was hardly recognizable.The water was polluted and the trees and flowers were all dead.The once sweet-smelling river now smelled terrible.It was really heartbreaking to see all this.
I do not regret having seen my old neighborhood.However,I do not think my innocent childhood memories can ever be the same.I suppose it is true when they say,"You can never go home again."
