4.When two Bangs meet
SHELDON Cooper is a scientific genius on the popular American TV show,The Big Bang Theory (《生活大爆炸》).He finally met his match last year:Stephen Hawking.
This is not the first time that the scientist has appeared on TV.He has also been on Star Trek (in 1987)and The Simpsons (in 1989).Each time,he played himself.
Hawking,71,is perhaps the world's most famous scientist after Albert Einstein.He has spent his whole life studying the beginning and the end of the universe,including the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) theory.
The Big Bang theory explains the early development of the universe.According to the theory,about 13.7billion years ago everything was all squeezed together in a tiny,tight little ball,and then the ball exploded.The results of that explosion are what we call the universe.?
Hawking has always tried to make science more popular with people.His book:A Brief History of Time was published in 1988.In the book he shares his understanding of the universe in simple language.The book tries to explain many subjects about the universe to common readers,including the Big Bang,black holes and light cones (光锥).
Hawking's achievements are even greater if you think about his disability.When he was 21,Hawking caught a bad illness that slowly stopped him from moving or talking.Now he sits on a wheelchair with a computer by his side.To communicate,he moves two fingers to control the computer's mouse.He chooses his words from the screen,which are then spoken by a voice synthesizer (合成器).
Hawking also believes that there might be aliens in space.However,he believes they are probably very dangerous,so we should not look for them."I imagine they might exist in very big ships…having used up all the resources from their home planet,"Hawking said in a British documentary named Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking.

40.What does the"two Bangs"in the title refer to?D
A.The director of"The Big Bang Theory"and the founder of it.
B.The director and the actor of"The Big Bang Theory".
C.The founder of the"Big Bang"theory and its spreader.
D.The scientific genius on TV show and the one alive in real life.
41.Acting in The Big Bang Theory is Hawking'sC time on TV.
A.first        B.second
C.third        D.fourth
42.According to Paragraph 5,Hawking wrote the book A Brief History of Time especially forC.
A.scientists who study the universe
B.people who know a lot about the universe
C.people who know little about the universe
D.people who only know simple language
43.The Big Bang theory mainly explainsA.
A.how the universe started
B.what the universe is like
C.how old the universe is
D.how the universe exploded
44.According to the passage,which of the following about Hawking is TRUE?B
A.He was born with a disability.
B.He uses a computer to communicate.
C.He believes aliens are our friends.

14.When you were a child you had a pure mind which was free from worries and anxieties.However,as time goes by,you're faced with so many problems in life.Below are five techniques that can help you get relaxed.
1.Mind your own business.
Yes,please mind your own business.When you start being concerned about things which are not related to you,you lose your control on your thought process,which often has negative results disturbing the mental peace.Basically,your mind starts wandering here and there.So next time an unnecessary thought comes to your mind,think whether this is really something you should be worrying for?If not,keep it away and focus on something positive,practical and fruitful.
2.Surround yourself with positive people.
Overlook negative comments and stay away from negative souls.When someone is negative,he spreads negativity and you get affected.Staying with such people will have long term influence on your character so think about your company.
3.Don't think about others too much.
Remember:Small minds discuss people; Average minds discuss events; Higher minds discuss ideas and Great minds act in silence.Don't allow your brain to compare yourself to others as this is an insult (侮辱) to yourself.Don't be jealous; it's a heart killing disease,get rid of it as soon as possible.When you are jealous you focus on finding faults in others even if they don't have.This poisons your soul and steals the mental peace.
4.You can't keep everyone happy.
Don't be oversensitive (过于敏感的).Be natural in what you do.Be positive and constructive in your deeds and then don't really care too much about others.Be aware,don't apply this to too closed relations.Develop trust to build up powerful relationships.
5.Don't believe yourself to be unlucky.
Remember this:Bad luck happens to everyone.It's not your fault at all.Time,whether good or bad,passes quickly.Develop the power of not looking back into your past.Believe in the power of Now.Believe in your skills.Work hard and you will get what you have been entitled for.Be patient and see what has been planned for you.
With these recommendations,I believe if you can make it,it's probable that you can bring changes in your lifestyle and get back your mental peace.
67.This passage is written for those who want toD.

15.Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble-and was he?Have you ever dreamed something that came true later?Maybe you have ESP(特异功能).ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception.It may be called a sixth sense.It seems to let people know about events before they happen,or events that are happening some distance away.
Here's an example.A woman was ironing clothes.Suddenly she screamed,"My father is dead!I saw him sitting in the chair!"Just then,a telegram came.The woman's father died of a heart attack.He died sitting in a chair.
There are thousands of stories like this one on record.Scientists are studying them to find out what's behind these strange mental messages.Here's another example-one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.
A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by.The driver said,"There's room for one more."The man felt the driver seemed dead,so he ran away.The next day,when the man was getting on a crowded bus,the bus driver said."There's room for one more."
Then the man saw that the driver's face was the same face he had seen in the dream.He wouldn't get on the bus.As the bus drove off,it crashed and burst into flames.Everyone was killed!
Some people say stories like these are coincidences.Others,including some scientists,say that ESP is real.From studies of ESP,we may someday learn more about the human mind.

19.What science story once told about other worlds far away is now a fact.Astronomers prove another solar (of the sun) system like ours with some planets in the constellation Andromeda (仙女座).
Geoffrey Marcy is a professor of astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University. He says,"What we have found now is indeed a fully-grown system of planets around the star Upsilon Andromeda. It appears to have three planets, one close in,one at a middle distance, and one farther out.The star is slightly larger than our sun.The planets are huge, like our Jupiter(木星)."
Marcy's partner in this research,Debra Fischer, describes the solar system,"Here are the inner planet that goes around every 46 days, the middle planet that goes around every 242 days, and then the outer planet that goes around every three and a half to four years."
The sun of that solar system,Upsilon Andromeda,is so near and bright that it can be seen by using no equipment during summer and fall.
For twelve years astronomers searched the skies in the belief that if our sun has planets around it,surely others do,too.Geoffrey Marcy says,"And then starting three and a half years ago,we began finding for the first time planets singly, one planet here around one star…"
"When I look up at the stars now at night,I can imagine easily that every one of them has planets around them,"says Debra Fischer.
It was a tremble (shaking) in the star that led Marcy to the planets."The star rocks around because of the gravity of the planet as a dog owner gets pulled around by a little dog."
Can they support life?We don't know, because present technology is not advanced enough to determine what the planets are made of.That,Marcy says,is astronomy's next challenge.
32.What's the relation between Andromeda (A),Upsilon Andromeda system (U) and the mentioned three planets (P)?D

33.According to Debra Fischer,in the new solar system,B.
A.the larger a planet is,the shorter it takes to go around the star
B.the farther a planet is from the star, the longer it takes to go around the star
C.it takes all the planets around three and a half to four years to go around the star
D.the planets move around the star at the same speed
34.What led to Marcy's discovery of the planets?C
A.That any planet has gravity.
B.That a dog owner was pulled by his dog.
C.The tremble of Upsilon Andromeda.
D.That any star has its planets.
35.We can infer (推断) that the scientists areA.
A.to find out whether the planets can support life
B.to find means to travel to the planets
C.to communicate with the living beings on the planets

13.Public Speaking Training
•Get a coach
(46)E,so get help.Since there are about a billion companies out there all ready to offer you public speaking training and courses,here are some things to look for when deciding the training that's right for you.
•Focus on positives
Any training you do to become more effective at public speaking should always focus on the positive aspects of what you already do well.Nothing can hurt confidence more than being told that you aren't doing well.(47)B,so good public speaking training should develop those instead of telling you what you shouldn't do.
•(48)C
If you find a public speaking course that looks as though it's going to give you lots of dos and don'ts,walk away!Your brain is so full of what you're going to be talking about.
(49)G.As far as we're concerned,there are basically no hard and fast rules about public speaking.Your audience can be your friends.
•You are a special person not a clone
Most importantly,good public speaking training should treat you as a special one,with your own personal habits.(50)A.Your training course should help you bring out your personality,not try to turn you into someone you're not.
A.You aren't like anybody else
B.You already do lots of things well
C.Turn your back on too many rules
D.Check the rules about dos and don'ts
E.Whatever the presentation, public speaking is tough
F.The one thing you don't want is for them to fall asleep
G.So trying to force a whole set of rules into it will just make things worse.
