Next Stop: Planet Mars
Fly me to the moon? That’s not far enough. On September 14, 2011, NASA released designs for a superrocket, the Space Launch System (SLS). This time the final destination will be Mars.
The SLS is a huge, liquid-fuelled rocket. If it is fully developed, it will be the most powerful rocket ever built. Its lift capability will be much bigger than that of the space shuttle of Saturn 5, the rocket that sent the Apollo missions to the moon.
NASA is planning to launch its first unmanned test flight in 2017. It is hoped that the first crew will fly in 2021 and astronauts will make it to a nearby asteroid(小行星) in 2025. NASA hopes to send the rocket and astronauts to Mars from the asteroid by the 2030s, according to the Associated Press (AP).
NASA used liquid rockets to send Apollo, Gemini and Mercury into space, but later changed to solid rockets boosters(助推火箭) because they were cheaper. Tragically, however, a booster flaw(缺陷) caused the space shuttle Challenger to crash in 1986. The new project plans to return to liquid fuel.
According to AP, the rockets will at first be able to carry 77 to 110 tons of payload(净载重量). Eventually they will be able to carry 143 tons into space, maybe even as many as 165 tons, NASA officials said. By comparison, the Saturn 5 booster could lift 130 tons and the space shuttle just 27 tons.
However, unlike reusable shuttles, these powerful rockets are mostly one use only. New ones have to be built for every launch. This will be very costly.
NASA estimates that it will cost about $3 billion (19 billion yuan) per year, or $18 billion until the first test flight in 2017. NASA hopes to make money by allowing private companies to send astronauts to the International Space Station like giant taxi services, so that the program can be “sustainable”.
“This is perhaps the biggest thing for space exploration in decades,” said Senator Bill Nelson, a former astronaut. “The goal is to fly humans safely beyond low-Earth orbit(轨道) and deep into outer space where we cannot only survive, but one day also live.”

Teachers have long said that success is its own reward. But these days, some students are finding that good grades can bring them cash and luxury gifts.
In at least a dozen states this school year, students who bring home top marks can expect more than just thankfulness.
The most ambitious experiment began in September, when seven states—Arkansas, Alabama, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington—won spots in an Mobil?funded program that, in most cases, pays students $100 for each passing grade on advanced placement(AP) college?prep exams.
It’s an effort to get low?income and minority students interested in the courses, says Tommie Sue Anthony, president of the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science. “We still have students who are not sure of the value, who are not willing to take the courses.” she says, “Probably the motivation will make a difference with those students.”
Gregg Fleisher of the National Math and Science Initiative, which runs the seven?state program, says the effort is modeled on a program adopted by Dallas in the 1995-1996 school year that saw AP course?taking jump obviously. That program is now statewide.
While many educators would be against offering kids cash for good grades, Fleisher and others say the idea is simple. “It’s an encouragement to get them to basically make the right decision and choose a more strict class.” he says, “This teaches them that if they work at something very hard and have a lot of support, they can do something they didn’t think they could do.”
An analysis of the Texas program last month by Cornell economist C.Kirabo Jackson found that it linked to a 30% rise in the number of students with high SAT and ACT scores and an 8% rise in college?going students.

LONDON (AP) — England joins on Sunday the growing list of places that ban smoking in public buildings, taxis and other places including even Buckingham Palace with a tough law.

Pubs, clubs and restaurants will all be smoke-free. Taxi and delivery drivers have been warned that they too could be fined 50 pounds, or about $100, if caught lighting up inside work vehicles.

Experts say the bans have become an irreversible (不可逆转的) tread because of greatly rising health costs and public uneasiness over second-hand smoke. Some of the strictest smoking bans are in the United States, even though there is no federal anti-smoking policy. New York and Florida have strict bans, while California has certain outdoor smoking bans.

Spain, Italy, Iran, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, South Africa, Uruguay and new Zealand have passed legislation(立法) to restrict smoking. France banned smoking in many public places in February and plans to extend the ban to cafes and restaurants next year. Finland is introducing a ban in 2009.

Despite the spread of bans, the World Health Organization predicts a steady rise in tobacco sales. In its Tobacco Atlas, the WHO said that by 2030 there will be “at least another two billion smokers in the world” and an expected decrease in male smokers “will be offset by an increase in female smoking rates, especially in developing countries.”

In advance of the English ban, anti-smoking ads have coated bus stops and the British government has subsidized(资助) programs to help people quit. The rest of Britain—Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland —already have smoking bans in place.

B.There is an extremely strict smoking ban everywhere in America.

C.Smoking situation is still serious across the world.

D.Related ads didn’t appear in England until the English ban was lifted.(解除)

Who's in control of your life? Who's pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it's other people-society,
colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very
young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice
experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it,
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions
a quota tion."
So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a
drug-we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the ap proval (赞
同) of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug
addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix (一剂毒品), we worsen our own existence
to get our own constant fix of approval.
But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom-the freedom
to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda,
and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you.
Further more, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has
a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please
everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way-make a conscious decision to stop caring
what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values-not values imposed from the
outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the
changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy
life.
1. What Oscar Wilde says implies that ____.
A. we have thoughts similar to those of others
B. most people have a variety of thoughts
C. other people's thoughts are more important
D. most people's thoughts are controlled by others
2. What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph?
A. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.
B. We may lose ourselves to please others.
C. We need to pay for what we want to get.
D. The price of taking the drug is freedom.
3. It can be concluded from the passage that ____.
A. it's better to do what we like
B. we shouldn't care what others think
C. we shouldn't change our own opinions
D. it's important to accept others' opinions
