Ever Googled yourself and found someone who has your name-and a very different life? You’ve just met your Googleganger.

Eve Fairbanks is a student at Yale University. Her name appeared on a few X-rated sites when her mother had Googled her out of curiosity. But that Eve Fairbanks wasn’t her Eve-it was a “Googleganger”, a virtual(虚拟的)or real person with the same name.

Much like the verb “to Google” has become as familiar in our everyday language as “to search,” the term “Googleganger” has also caught on with a generation of people judged not so much by their accomplishments but by how Google-able those accomplishments are.

“You are who you are because of Google,” says Matthew Slutsky, 26 a political blogger who has befriended his own Googleganger on Facebook(大学生网络社区).

For some, your Googleganger is your rival in a race to the top of the Google hit list. It can also be a source of comparison. For others, a Googleganger is a lifelong irritant(刺激剂).

Minnesota IT consultant Robert Fischer was 10 years old when “Searching for Bobby Fischer” the 1993 movie about a great chess talent, came out. It made things awkward at home-Robert’s grandfather was training him to be a chess champ, too! “And here was some kid who was younger and better than I’d ever be,” he says. And now it’s dashing his hopes of upping his Google rank.

At least he doesn’t share his name with a porn(色情)star. Fairbanks got lucky in the end. Her name was remove from the sites, thanks to Google’s support team. And as it turned out, porn-star Eve might not have actually existed: her name, Google told our Eve, might have been created as a marketing means to drive more traffic to the porn sites.

The summer I was ten,my mother decided to bring us to the world of art.My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles(风格).It was almost as bad as being in school.Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?

First we had to read about ancient Egyptians(古埃及人)and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested.Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly(卷曲的)hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings.I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.

On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary.In it,a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child.I couldn’t stop looking at this painting!I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made!It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.

According to some talk, the younger generation in Smithville is the most antisocial in history. This seems far from the truth. Young people today as a whole are better, more informed, more ambitious, healthier, and more smart than ever before. Why then, it may be asked, do we see such restlessness and such antisocial behavior among our young people?

For the answer the citizens of this community must look at themselves. What have they done to the grounds that have been built in the last fifteen years? How many swimming pools are there? How many vocational training projects have been started? How many community – organized youth parties and picnics have been held?

The average citizen will answer that the responsibility for these activities belongs to the schools. But the schools cannot be held responsible for all the free – time activities of all the young people of this community. The job of the schools is formal education, not free – time recreation(娱乐).

This community needs a youth center suitable for such activities as picnics, camping, sports, music, art and so on. There should be social and recreational activities to meet the needs and interests of every member of our school age youth.

Mayor Elmo D. Greely has proposed the formation of a Youth Club as the first step in the direction of a Youth Center. Mayor Greely has called a meeting at the City Hall on Friday, August 15, at noon.

Giving up a lunch hour is a very little sacrifice for a project that can be of great importance to this community.

This newspaper urges every adult and young person of Smithville to attend this important meeting. We believe our industrial, business, and professional leaders have an especially strong duty to be present.

This newspaper will be present and intends to support this project with vigor.
