5."Confidence"is probably one of the most noticeable quality in the Americans.They show confidence in the way they talk,the way they smile,the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confident American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and teacher.As a student,being confident means you should dare to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all.What's worse,the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the topic---this is the last comment any graduate would not like to receive.
Being confidence for me as a foreign teacher means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself uneasiness or even shame.But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their Speeches.(The course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking.) Modesty(谦虚) is a quality highly valued in China,but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.

60.What should we do most if we want to compete with American students?A

C.shows no interest in the courseD.is considered to have no opinion of his own
62.The author is most likely to feel uneasiness ifC.
A.he asks a student to repeat what he has saidB.the students bargain with him
C.he pretends to know what he doesn't D.he has to give a speech
63.The passage is mainly organized byB.
A.giving examplesB.describing personal experiences

4.The fact that people are no longer tied to specific places for functions such as studying or learning, says William Mitchell,a professor of architecture and computer science at MIT,means that there is"a huge drop in demand for traditional,(51)C,enclosed spaces"such as offices or classrooms, and simultaneously"a huge rise in demand for semi-public spaces that can be informally appropriated to ad-hoc workspaces".This shift,he thinks, amounts to the biggest change in (52)Bin this century. In the 20th century architecture was about (53)Astructures-offices for working, cafeterias for eating, and so forth. This was necessary because workers needed to be near things such as landline phones, fax machines and filing cabinets.

"This(57)Dis what separates successful spaces and cities from unsuccessful ones,"says Anthony Townsend,an urban planner at the Institute for the Future,a think-tank.Almost any public space can assume some of these features. For example,a not-for-profit organization in New York has(58)BBryant Park,a once abandoned but charming garden in front of the city's public library, into a hybrid space popular with office workers. The park's managers noticed that a lot of visitors were using mobile phones and laptops in the park,so they (59)AWi-Fi and added some chairs with foldable lecture desks. The idea was not to distract people from the flowers but to let them customize their little bit of the park.
The academic name for such spaces is"third places",a term originally coined by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book,"The Great,Good Place".At the time, long before mobile technologies became widespread,Mr Oldenburg wanted to (60)Dbetween the sociological functions of people's first places (their homes),their second places (offices) and the public spaces that(61)Asafe,neutral and informal meeting points. As Mr Oldenburg saw it,a good third place makes admission free or cheap-the price of a cup of coffee,say-offers creature comforts,is within walking distance for a particular neighborhood and (62)Da group of regulars.
As more(63)Dplaces pop up and spread, they also change entire cities.Just as buildings during the 20th century were specialized by(64)A,towns were as well, says Mr Mitchell.Suburbs were for living, downtowns for (65)Band other areas for playing. But urban nomadism makes districts, like buildings, multifunctional.Parts of town that were monocultures,he says, gradually become"fine-grained mixed-use neighborhoods".

10.Saint Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages.One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid(爱神丘比特),the Roman god of love,who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow.
One legend dates as far back as the days of the Roman Empire,according to the story,Claudius,the Emperor of Rome,wanted to increase the size of the army.He knew that it would be easier to get young man who were not married to join.Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.Valentine,who was an Italian bishop,living in AD 200,broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people that came to him.Finally,Claudius found out Valentine and put him in prison,where he remained until his death on February 14.After his death,Valentine was made a saint,and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine's Day.
Another Valentine,a Christian priest,had been thrown in prison for his teachings.But he was beheaded(斩首) on February 14,because he supposedly cured the jailer's(狱卒的) daughter of her blindness.The night before his death,he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter,signing it"From Your Valentine."
In AD 496Sain Pope Gelasius I named February 14as"Valentine's Day".Although it's not an official holiday,people across the world observe this day.
Whatever the old mixture of origins,Saint Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts.It is a day when you show your friend or loved one that you care.You can send candy to someone you think is special.Or you can send roses,the flower of love.Most people send"valentines,"a greeting card named after the notes that Saint Valentine received in jail.Whatever the form may be,the message is almost the same"will you be my Valentine?"

17.It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents.They say that their parents don't understand them.They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways,that they are too serious and too strict with their children,and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they tend(倾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example,young people like to act on the spot without much thinking.It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation.Old people worry more easily.Most of them plan things in advance,at least in the back of their minds,and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes,in entertainment and in music.But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world,into which they have not yet been accepted.That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own,and if their parents don't like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech,this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say"yes"to what you do.All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.It is natural enough,after being a child for so many years,when you were ompletely under your parents'control.
If you prefer to control your life,you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you.If your arents see that you have a high sense of responsibility,they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
32.According to the text,young people prefer toD.

D.do things without thinking carefully ahead
33.Why do young people like to have clothes,entertainment and music in their way?A
A.Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
B.Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.
C.Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.
D.Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.

Speak clearly and loudly enough.Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice.When you speak,look at the interviewer.Also,don't say negative things about yourself,or former employer.
Listen to questions carefully.If you don't understand a question,ask the interviewer to repeat or explain:"I'm sorry,but I didn't catch that.""I'm not sure exactly what you mean."
Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview.Interviewers know that.They don't expect you to be totally calm and relaxed.But they expect you to try to control your nervousness.They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.
It's a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview,or deliver it by hand.
Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week.Ask if they have made a decision about the job.
