The Changing Role of American Women
In the early 1900s, most Americans lived on farms. Women usually got up long before the sun to milk cow, gather eggs and prepare a big breakfast. During the day, they did a lot of housework. They sometimes worked in the fields with their husbands.
During the next fifty years, however, life in America changed greatly. Most people moved from farms into cities or towns where the husband had a job in an office, store or factory. In the 1940sand 1950s most women continued to work at home, taking care of the house and children, doing the washing and cooking. During the 1960s more and more women began to work outside their homes. By 1980 more than 60% of all American women between the ages of 18 and 54 had jobs. At first, most women worked only if their income (收入) was needed because of the death or illness of their husbands, but later women began to work by choice. As automation (自动化) took over many of the jobs at home and as the husband spent long hours on the work, some women found less fulfillment (成就) in housework. An increase (增加) in the divorce rate (离婚率) also pushed more women into labor force (劳动力). By 1980, 8.5 million American families were headed by women with no husband present (在场的).
Like Chinese women, American women have always worked either on the farms, in their homes or in the workplace. As we enter a new century, American women find their role (作用) in society has greatly improved. Many choices open to them now. Many are entering the professions (职业) and occupying (占据) key positions (关键位置) in politics, business and education, and their number continues to grow.
