3.There are thousands of products (商品) of all colors and shapes in a supermarket,making you believe that they are worth a try.How?Packaging is the silent but persuading salesman.
There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer,because he/she is buying not only a product but also his/her belief in life.Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the"quality"of the product and on how well it sells,because"consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package.Many products are packages and many packages are products."as Louis Cheskin,the first social scientist studying consumers'feelings for packaging,noticed.
Colors are one of the best tools in packaging.Studies of eye movement have shown that colours draw human attention quickly.Take V8for example.For many years,the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that is it very good for your body.And the word"green"today can keep food prices going up.
Shapes are another attraction.Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness,because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart.That's why the round yellow M signs of McDonald's are inviting to both young and old.
This new consumer response to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people by to satisfy both body and soul.

4.Until last spring,Nia Parker and the other kids in her neighborhood went to school on Bus 59.But as fuel prices rose,the school district needed to find a way to cut its transportation costs.So the school's busing company redrew its route map,canceling Nia's bus.Now Nia and her neighbors travel the half mile to school via a"walking school bus"-a group of kids,supervised (监护) by an adult or two,who make the walk together.
Many parents are delighted to see their kids walking to school,partly because many did so themselves.According to a 1979survey,nearly half of school kids walked or biked to school,compared with only 16percent in 2011.Modern parents have been unwilling to let kids walk to school for fear of traffic,crime or simple bullying,but with organized adult supervision,those concerns have reduced.
Schools and busing companies are finding other ways to save.In rural areas where busing is a must,some schools have even chosen four-day school weeks.Busing companies instruct drivers to cancel extra stops from routes and to turn off the engine while idling(挂空挡).They are also using computer software to determine the most fuel-efficient routes,which aren't always the shortest ones.
There could be disadvantages,however,to the busing cutbacks.If every formerly bused student begins walking to school,it's an environmental win-but if too many of their parents decide to drive them instead,the overall carbon footprint can grow.Replacing buses with many more parent-driven cars can also increase safety risks.A 2011report concluded students are 13times safer on a school bus than in a passenger car,since buses have fewer accidents and withstand them better due to their size.And some students complain about the long morning hikes,particularly when the route contains a really big hill.

56.In regards to walking to school,modern parents seem much concerned with theA.

C.time spent on the way               D.changes in the route
57.To save money,some schools choose toA.
A.shorten the school week            B.take the shortest routes
C.stop using school buses            D.use fuel-efficient buses
58.Busing cutbacks may lead toC.
A.fewer complaints about long morning hikes
B.more students taking public transportation
C.an increase in carbon dioxide emissions
D.a decrease in the safety of school buses.
1.My friend Fowkes, tells a story of a class he took in 1930s,when books were short and expensive. On the first day the professor marched up to the blackboard, looked through his notes, cleared his throat, and began.Fowkes was the only student in the course.Once Fowkes fell ill and missed a class. When he returned,to Fowkes's astonishment, the professor began to deliver not the next lecture in the sequence but the one after.Had he lectured to an empty hall in the absence of his only student? It was perfectly possible.
Today, professors continue to lecture and students to listen much as they did. It's time for us to abandon the lecture system and turn to methods that really work.
Attending lectures is passive learning,at least for inexperienced listeners.Active learning,in which students write essays or perform experiments and then have their work evaluated by an instructor,is far more beneficial for those who have not yet fully learned how to learn. Most students learn best by engaging in debate. They need small discussion classes that demand a joint effort of teacher and students rather than classes in which one person, however learned, expresses his or her own ideas.
The lecture system harms professors as well.It reduces feedback to a minimum,so that the lecturer can neither judge how well students understand the material nor benefit from their questions or comments.Questions that require the speaker to clarify unclear points and comments that challenge inadequately constructed arguments are indispensable to scholarship.Without them, the liveliest mind becomes dull.
If lectures make so little sense, why have they been allowed to continue? The truth is that lectures are easier on everyone than debates.Lectures give some students an opportunity to sit back and let the professor run the show.In a classroom where everyone contributes, students are less able to hide and professors have less room to show off how smart they are.
Worse still, the lectures too frequently come at the wrong end of the students'educational careers-during the first two years, when they most need close, even individual, instruction. If lecture classes were restricted to junior and senior undergraduates and to graduate students, who are more academically independent and more capable of working on their own, they would be far less destructive of students'interests and enthusiasms. After all, students must learn to listen before they can listen to learn.

8."San Francisco,open your Golden Gate,"sang the girl in the theatre.She never finished her song.The date was 18th,1906.
The earth shook and the roof suddenly divided,buildings crashed to the ground and people rushed out into the streets.The dreadful earthquake destroyed the city that had grown up when men discovered gold in the deserts of California.But today the streets of San-Francisco stretch over more than 40steep hills,rising like huge cliffs above the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The best way to see this splendid city,where Spanish were the first to make their homes,is to take one of the old cable cars which run along the nine main avenues.Fares are cheap; they have not risen for almost a hundred years.
You leave the palm trees in Union Square-the heart of San-Francisco and from the shop signs and the faces around you,you will notice that in the city live people from many nations-Austrians,Italians,Chinese,and others,giving every part of the city a special character.More Chinese live in China Town than in any other part of the world outside China.Here,with Chinese restaurants,Chinese post-boxes,and even odd telephone-boxes that look like pagoda(宝塔),it is easy to feel you are in China itself.

2.The summer of 2001saw.Australians win the Cycling Tour de France,beat the world at cricket and rugby,and have a player in the final of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament for the eighteenth time.
Many countries would be amazed at that kind of success.For Australia,it was just a typical sporting summer.At the 2000Olympics,Australia came fourth in the medals table.That does not sound great,yet Australia has a population of only 19million.There are more Olympic medal winners per head of population in Australia than any other country.
What is it that makes Australians a sporting people? This is a question that many people participating in sports have asked themselves over the years.
Some of the answers are simple.Sports need space.Australians have 7.4million square kilometers of space to play sports in.Many other countries are either too crowded or too small to encourage everybody to take part.Besides that,Australia is a warm,dry country.This encourages people to go outdoors to enjoy themselves.Furthermore,since 85percent of Australians live near the sea,they learn water sport early; and since sharks swim off the coasts of Australia,they also learn to swim very fast.
Other reasons go deep into the history,culture and economy of the country.When the British first found Australia they decided that it would be a great place to send criminals to.Life for the first Australians was very tough,so they had to be independent and develop a will to win just to survive.Yet they also had to be able to trust each other and be willing to help each other out.In other countries,coaches train people in mental toughness and team building.In Australia,these qualities are part of the general social environment.
From the cultural perspective,being far away from Europe also means that Australians are far away from the centers of Western arts and cultures.As a result,sport itself has become a way of cultural expression and part of Australian nationality.An English football fan wants to see the national team do well,but really cares about his local club.For an Australian,representing the nation is the most important of all.Everything else is just good practice.Being good at sports is part of what it means to be an Australian.

55.What can we learn from Para.2?D
A.Australia has the most medal winners in the world.

D.The performance of Australia in sports is great in relation to its population.
