In the future, humans may no longer have to slave over a hot stove. It's the end of a tiring day at work and you can't face cooking dinner. In this situation, most people would order a pizza or run down to the neighborhood noodle shop for takeout.
What if there was another option? What if you arrived home to find a delicious hot meal waiting for you, prepared by your very own kitchen robot? It might sound like science fiction, but professors at the University of Tokyo have taken the first steps toward making this scenario(情景)a reality. The team recently introduced a humanoid(像人的)kitchen robot that can pour tea and other drinks into cups and serve them to guests. When teatime is over, the robot can even wash the dishes and put them away.
In California, another interesting kitchen robot has been developed.Called the Readybot, it can pick up objects and either store them in cabinets or put them in the trash. It also carries a separate floor-cleaning robot that can operate by itself.Unlike the Japanese robot, Readybot is not humanoid.Instead, it looks more like a large box with arms and wheels.
Readybot was created by engineers and designers who established a club called the Readybot Challenge. They believe that in the future millions of robots will be needed in homes to perform ordinary household tasks.Readybot is just the first step in their plan to create a robot that can tackle jobs not only in kitchen but in other rooms of homes and in offices as well.
Clearly there are technological hurdles to overcome before robots can cook a complete dinner, and there are also many safety concerns. Not everyone(especially parents)would be comfortable with the idea of robots in their house, manipulating(使用,操作)hot pans and sharp knives. The European Commission recently funded a project to study these concerns.According to lead researcher Professor Chris Melhuish,“Enabling robots to interact safely with humans is a key need for the future development of robotics.”

I ran into a stranger as he passed by.“I'm so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuse me too…I wasn't 1 watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I.Then we went 2 our way after saying goodbye.
But at 3 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old.Later in the kitchen, as I 4 our meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I 5 knocked her down.“Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown(皱眉).She stepped away silently, with her little heart 6 .I didn't realize how harshly(苛刻地)I had spoken.
That night, when I lay 7 in bed, God's quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While 8 with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite…Go look around on the kitchen floor, you'll find some flowers there by the 9 .Those are the flowers she brought for you.She 10 them herself-pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly, and you never saw the 11 in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears had begun to fall.I quietly went and knelt by her 12 :“Wake up, my dear,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree.I 13 them in a napkin, just for you.I knew you'd like them, especially the 14 .” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today…And I 15 have fussed at you that way.”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that's okay…I still love you 16 .” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I LOVE the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the 17 you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave 18 will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our 19 than into our families-an unwise investment(投资)indeed.

I was tired and hungry after a long day of work. When I walked into the living room, my 12-year-old son looked 1 at me and said, “I love you.” I didn’t know what to say. 2 several seconds all I could do was to stand there and 3 down at him.My first thought was that he must need 4 with his homework or he was trying to 5 me for some news. Finally I asked, “What was that all about?”
“Nothing.” He said, “My teacher said we should 6 our parents that we love them and see what they say. It’s a(n) 7 .”
The next day I called his teacher to 8 more about this “experiment” and how the other parents had 9 .
“Basically, most of the fathers had the 10 reaction as you did.” The teacher said, “When I first 11 we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble.” “The 12 is,” the teacher explained, “feeling loved is an important part of 13 .It’s something all human beings 14 .What I’m trying to tell the children is that it’s too 15 that we don’t all express those feelings.A boy should be 16 to tell his dad that he loves him.”
The teacher, a middle-aged man, understands how 17 it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me that evening, I held on to him for 18 second. And just 19 he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you, too.”
I don’t know if saying that made either of us healthier, but it did feel pretty good.Maybe next time if my child says “I love you”, it would not take me a whole day to think o f the right 20 .
