My friend Jason is fourteen now. He has two brothers and three sisters. His father works in a    1    factory and his mother is a nurse. They work hard but are paid    2    and they're often worried about the    3    and clothes.

Jason always wears old clothes and    4    a broken bag. He has to help his mother to do some washing and cleaning and has no    5    to do his lessons at home. So he usually    6    the teachers carefully in class and asks them some questions. It's    7    for him to finish his homework at school and he tries to do more    8    after school. But it doesn't interfere with his studies and he's always the top of our    9   .

Barry, whose father is a dentist, always wears expensive and    10    clothes. He likes to show off his riches to us though he often    11    in the examinations. He is jealous of Jason's    12    and tries his best to make fun of him. My friend knows him well and doesn't    13    it. Winter has come and we all wear new and    14    coat. But Jason's coat is old and his shoes are    15   . ¡°How miserly (ÁߨÄ) your father is!¡± Barry    16    Jason in the classroom one day.  ¡°He's a shoemaker    17    you wear such shoes!¡±

    ¡°But I think your father is    18    miserly.¡± said Jason. ¡°He's a rich dentist but your eight-month-old brother has only a few    19   !¡±

Having heard this, Barry's face turned red and    20   .

¡¡¡¡All kinds of people came in to have their shoes shined. Most folks were friendly. But this man was different.

¡¡¡¡¡°How much do you make a week, boy?¡±he asked me. I felt he was __1__ at me.

¡¡¡¡He kept giving a sharp __2__ around every now and then. All the time I kept __3__ where I'd seen his face. Suddenly I knew. I'd seen his __4__ in the post office many times. He was the big robber: __5__ by the police in three states!

¡¡¡¡¡°You know, ¡±he was saying,¡°it's imagination people __6__. You'll never get anywhere as a shoeshine boy.¡±

¡¡¡¡I kept brushing on his shoes as __7__ as I could. The sooner I finished, the better. He said,¡°When I was sixteen, I had __8__ $ 2 500 of my own.¡±

¡¡¡¡That reminded me of something. Was it $ 2 500 or $ 5 000 or $ 25 000? I wasn't __9__. I knew a big reward was __10__ for him.

¡¡¡¡But what could I do about it? __11__ him with a can of shoe polish£¨²ÁÁÁ¼Á£©? A man his __12__ could grind£¨Ñ¹Ë飩me into the floor. If only someone would come in! He kept talking away£¨à©à©²»ÐÝ£©.¡°Along with __13__, it takes courage. The courage to take a chance. Start something on a shoestring£¨Ð¬´ø£©.¡±

¡¡¡¡Suddenly I saw Officer Dailey __14__ across the street. Then, real fast, I began tightening the man's shoestrings.

¡¡¡¡The policeman was at the window when I cried out,¡°Officer Dailey, __15__! This man's a robber.¡±

¡¡¡¡¡°__16__,¡±the man shouted angrily. He started to jump off the stand. But he didn't go the __17__ he planned. He fell flat on his face and knocked himself out cold.

¡¡¡¡¡°That was __18__ clever of you,¡±the officer said. ¡°You'll get a reward of $ 7 500 for him.¡±

¡¡¡¡¡°Well, it really wasn't my __19__,¡±I said.¡°It was his. He told me that __20__ you had courage and imagination, you could start something big on a shoestring.¡±

I was cleaning out an old box when an old card caught my eye: Queen City Casket Company. ¡°What is it?¡± I wondered. I ¡¡1 it over. There, in faded ink, was a hand-scrawled (ÊÖдµÄ) ¡¡2 . Immediately my mind traveled ¡¡3 many years.

I was nine years old, walking down the cold, wet streets of Springfield, with a bag of magazines on my shoulder. On my ¡¡4 that day, I came to that Company finally, whose owner, Mr Rader, had always taken me there to ask his workers ¡¡5 they wanted any magazines

Back in his office, Mr Rader took out a ¡¡15 , wrote something on it, and handed it to me. With ¡¡16 eyes, I read, ¡°Do to others as you would have them do to you.¡± He said affectionately (ÉîÇ鵨), ¡°Jimmy, I want you to ¡¡17 I love you.¡±

I said good-bye, and for the first time I ¡¡18 a flicker of hope that somehow things would be ¡¡19 . With people like Mr Rader in the world, there was hope, kindness and love, and that would always make a ¡¡20 .

Five years ago. I went to Shao Xing to visit my cousin. My grandpa had been outside smoking when my aunt called him into the house. He left his ¡¡36 on the front porch£¨ÃÅÀÈ£© steps so he could continue smoking it ¡¡ 37 he returned.

My cousin was 38 to see what smoking was really like£¬so he picked up the cigarette£¬put it in his mouth and puffed(´µ) in 39 . Next£¬he was ¡¡40 his head off. He looked like he was about to throw up£¬but he stretched his hand out toward me to ¡¡41 me the cigarette. ¡°Come on. Try it.¡±he said.

I just grabbed the stupid thing out of his hand and smashed it with my ¡¡42 .Then£¬grandpa returned. ¡°Where¡¯d my cigarette go?¡± he asked. I just stood there£¬not wanting to admit what I had done or what my ¡¡43 had done before that. But I knew that this was the moment of truth. I took a deep breath and began to ¡¡44 .

I told my grandpa that I couldn¡¯t 45 believe he would choose to smoke. I was sure he knew how bad it was£¬so why did he do it? He said he started smoking when he was just a teenager. Now he was so 46 that he couldn¡¯t stop. It was just too hard to ¡¡47 .

Here was an old man£¬my own grandpa. £¬admitting there was something that he couldn¡¯t control that was probably 48 killing him. I stood there in disbelief. dumbfounded(Ä¿µÉ¿Ú´ôµÄ). Then I remembered this ad I had seen on TV: There was this lady who was so addicted(ÓÐñ«µÄ) to cigarettes that she¡¯d gotten really sick. Doctors had to 49 a hole in her throat for her to 50 £¬and she was still smoking through the hole! It was the most disgusting thing I¡¯ve ever seen. Standing in front of my grandpa£¬I began to cry. ¡¡51 that happened to him?

Ever since that day£¬ my grandpa has 52 ¡¡on cigarettes. I know one thing: I want to live a long time. I don¡¯t want to be ¡¡53 or out of control of my life the way ¡¡54 that lady was. I¡¯ll never smoke. I¡¯ll take ¡¡55 air.
