2.A new college guide in the United States compares educational requirements in seven subjects.These include math,science,writing and United States history or government.The other subjects are economics,foreign language and literature.
The free online guide is from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.The council is a nonprofit group that supports liberal arts education.
Its president,Anne Neal,says these areas of knowledge are needed to succeed in a twenty-first century society and an increasingly connected world.Yet she told VOA's Faiza Elmasry it was surprising how many students can graduate with,in her words,a"thin education."
Forty-two of the one hundred colleges and universities surveyed received the lowest marks.This meant they required two or fewer of the seven subjects.Five schools received a top grade for requiring six subjects.These were Brooklyn College in New York City,Texas A&M,the University of Texas-Austin,West Point and the University of Arkansas.
Robert Costrell is a professor of education reform and economics at the University of Arkansas.He says many,if not all,of the top American colleges once had a core curriculum-a set of courses required for all students.
But over the years,many have dropped these requirements.Or they have watered them down,Professor Costrell says,into what became known as distribution requirements.This system lets a student choose from a number of different courses to satisfy a requirement.
ROBERT COSTRELL:"And in many cases these courses went too far,I would say, towards the fluffy treatment of serious material, and students could satisfy their requirement by taking such courses."
Professor Costrell says schools should not only re-examine what they teach.They should also measure what students have learned-for example,through some form of examinations or papers.
A new report this week from the College Board showed that college prices continue to rise.But Anne Neal from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni says higher prices do not guarantee a better general education.In fact,the group found that the higher the tuition,the more likely that students have to develop their own general education.
The college guide is on the Web at whatwilltheylearn.com.Anne Neal says her group is surveying more colleges.The hope,she says,is to discover what college graduates have really learned,and how ready they are to compete in the global marketplace.

3.Facebook is an Internet-based social network site that lets people get in touch with family and friends and reach out to people with common interests around the world,all through computer.It is very popular,with more than 900million users.If Facebook were a country,it would have about three times the population of the United States.

On Facebook,"Friending"someone means you add the person to your list of people you can communicate with directly, which often allows the person to see more information about you than you share with the general public.

Facebook makes money when advertisers pay to get access to hundreds of millions of Facebook users.Advertisers can often direct their messages to the people most interested in their products because Facebook computers keep track of information that users place on their pages.For example,a person interested in diving,planning a wedding,looking for work,or suffering from diabetes(糖尿病) may see advertisements related to those topics.
Facebook has become so much a part of the culture of the United States and other nations that it has been the subject of a Hollywood movie.It is a key marketing tool for many businesses,and its users'content has been used as evidence in some divorce or criminal cases.

20.We talk about people being"color-blind"but very few of us are.Even those who describe  themselves as color-blind are normally just color lack.A strongly color-blind person will still be able to tell 20different colors,compared to the 100or so that normal-sighted people see.
Pingelap,a tiny island in the Pacific,is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble.It is known as Color Blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white.
Not being able to see in color is bad enough.But one islander,Herrol,who's a fisherman,also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image."I find it difficult to go outside in the sun,"he says,"because when it's sunny I cannot see to do my work."
But if being truly color-blind is rare,why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap lire in a totally black and white world?
Well,we know that in 1780the population of Pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami.As few as 20people survived,one of whom was the king.It's believed he had a genetic fault that causes color-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations.
There is one advantage.Herrol can see well,really well,in the dark.So when it gets dark,Herro1and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish.They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames."This type of fishing is fun,"Herrol says,"especially if we catch plenty.So even though it's hard work we enjoy it."

6.What can we infer about Herrol?A
A.He may stay at home when it's sunny.
B.He is interested in burnt-out images.
C.He likes taking photos very much.
D.He doesn't live in Pingelap any more.
7.What would be the best title for the text?C
A.The history of Pingelap
B.The disadvantage of Herrol
C.The island of color blindness
D.The advantage of color blindness.
5.In the famous fairy tale,Snow White eats the Queen's apple and falls victim to a curse; in Shakespeare's novel,Romeo drinks the poison and dies; some ancient Chinese emperors took pills that contained mercury,believing that it would make them immortal,but they died afterward.
Poison has long been an important ingredient in literature and history, and it seems to always be associated with evil, danger and death. But how much do you really know about poison?
An exhibition,The Power of Poison,opened last month at the American Museum of Natural History in New York,intended to give the audience a more vivid understanding of poison.The exhibition will continue until Aug 2014,reported The New York Times.
The museum tour starts in a rainforest setting,where you can see live examples of some of the most poisonous animals:caterpillars,frogs and spiders.Golden poison frogs,for instance,aren't much bigger than a coin,but their skin is covered in a poison that can cut off the signaling power of your nerves,and a single frog has enough venom to kill 10grown humans.
The exhibition also features interactive activities.In an iPad-based game,visitors are presented with three puzzling illnesses and asked to identify the poisons based on symptoms.In one case,for example,a pet dog is found sick in a backyard and visitors have to figure out whether it was the toad (蟾蜍),the leaky batteries in the trash or the dirty pond water that did it.
"Poisons can be bad for some things,"Michael Novacek,senior vice president of the museum,told NBC News."Yet they can also be good for others."
This is what visitors learn from the last part of the exhibition, which displays how poisons can be used favorably by humans, including for medical treatment.
The blood toxins of vampire bats,for example,can prevent blood from clotting (凝结),which may protect against strokes.A poisonous chemical found in the yew tree is effective against cancer,which is what led to the invention of a cancer-fighting drug called Taxol.One chemical in the venom of Gila monsters can lower the blood sugar of its victims,so it has been used to treat diabetes.
The benefits from natural poisons are not limited to just medicine.Believe it or not,many substances that we regularly take in-chili,coffee and chocolate,etc.-owe their special flavors or stimulating effects to chemicals that plants make to poison insects.

69.By mentioning Snow White and Romeo at the beginning of the story,the author intends toB.
A.show that poison has long been involved in literature

C.show that poison is always linked with evil and death
D.get readers to think of more examples of the use of poison in stories
70.What is the main purpose of the exhibition The Power of Poison?D

2.Cyberspace(网络空间) has given rise to a new social change where people make friends from across the world,but know little about their next-door neighbors.This worries critics (批评家),but some often find an Internet friendship more pleasant.
Take Bob for example.His neighbor doesn't know anything about gardening,but his instant messaging friend Gr33nThum does.Besides,Gr33nThum doesn't do that annoying sound when he talks.
Those people like Bob have long been criticized for their lack of necessary social skills.Critics think people almost forget how to naturally communicate with their neighbors,creating a social network of strangers.
However,a report entitled"The Strength of Internet Ties"provides a different opinion.Sociologists are suggesting that the Internet helps develop social networks and make use of them when it matters most.
Friends often move.As kids,our friends'parents move away.As adults,we move away to college or for work.Communicative tools have made losing touch the result of laziness,not distance."The larger and the more diverse(多样)a person's network,the more important e-mail is,"argues Jeffrey Boase,who co-authored the report."You can't make phone calls or personal visits to all your friends very often,but you can keep in touch with them regularly with the help of the Internet.That turns out to be very important."
In addition to expanding and strengthening the social ties people keep in the offline world,Internet and e-mail provide a social and informational support group that helps people make difficult decisions and face challenges."Internet use provides online users a path to resources,such as access to people who may have the right information to help deal with family health problems or find a new job,"says John Horrigan,author of the report.
"The Internet creates a new basis for community.Rather than relying on a single community for social support,people often must actively seek out a variety of appropriate people and resources for different situations,"says co-author Barry Wellman.

20.February 4,2012 saw the take-off of a new rising NBA star-Jeremy Lin.

But he had the courage and determination to stick to his dream,so he put himself into hard training to get ready for his opportunity to come. Then his moment arrived on February 4,2012,on which his excellent performance made him famous overnight. After that,he led the Knicks to their fifth straight victory.
The Associated Press called Lin"the most surprising story in the NBA".Knicks fans developed the nickname for him"Linsanity"(林发疯).Time magazine released its 2012 list of the 100"Most Influential People in the World",Jeremy Lin included.
