It's 10 o'clock. -Thank you. -You're welcome. 2.-Hello, Mrs. Tailor, is Peter there? -No. He is out on his bicycle at the moment. -Oh! Can he go swimming this afternoon? -Sorry, Jack. He's got a basketball match this afternoon. 3.-Can I help you? -Yes, I'd like a pound of oranges, please. -Do you want the ones at 20 pence, 25 pence or 30 pence? -The ones at 30 pence, please. 4.-Are you going to take the train to New York? -Yes, we've booked the tickets. We wanted to drive up there, but we've been having problems with the car and we can't afford to fly. 5.-Paul. -Yes? -Pass me the sugar, will you? I can't bear coffee without it. -Sure. Here you are. -Thank you. -Hello, Julie. Have you been to the new sports center yet? -Not yet, Peter. Where is it? -On Hill Road, you know, near Mill Street, behind the station. -Oh, is it good? -Yes it's great. You can do a lot of sports. I played table tennis last Thursday and watched the basketball match there, too. -What about swimming? -There is a very good swimming pool there, too. Do you want to go with me next week? -Sure. Any day except Wednesday. -Well. Why don't we go on Friday? Then we can stay late. -Ok. Let's meet after school. On Saturday evening, there is a talk by a well-known American writer, Sarah Jones. You may have read her latest novel. It's in all the bookshops at the moment. Well, she is giving a talk at 8 p.m. on Saturday evening in the library. That's the building next to Allen Hall, the English Department Building. Miss Jones has just returned from Africa and will talk about her experiences there. She traveled through 3 different countries and met lots of interesting people. Now, I'd like to remind you that the talk is for everyone, not just for the fourth-year students. I'm sure the talk will be very interesting and hope you all have a good time. My office is at Chicago International Airport. But I spend 60% of my time in the air. I teach airhostesses and help them with any problems. My hours are usually from 8 am to 4 pm, but sometimes I work from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. At work, the first thing I do is to check plane times on my computer and then I speak with some of the airhostesses. Sometimes I go on a long flight to check how hostesses are doing. That's my favorite part of job. But I like office work, too. Traveling can be hard work. When I get back from a long journey, all I can do is to eat something and then go to bed. I don't earn much money, but I'm happy with the United Airlines and I want to stay there and continue to travel. -You know these people who want to read about the company? -Yes. You are meeting them next week, aren't you? -Hum. Where should I take them, the factory perhaps? -I suppose you prefer this office because it is more comfortable. -Well. I did think here, yes. But maybe a restaurant somewhere. -I think they prefer to see where our products are made. -Ok, I'll meet them there. -I understand how you feel, sir. But there simply isn't any room. The person who took your book in must have forgotten to write it down. I'm afraid it was just a mistake. He is new, you see. -Just a mistake? Do you realize that I've invited some very important people to dinner? That mistake could make me lose an important business partner. -I'm sorry, sir. I suggest you call them and explain the problem. I'm sure you'll find several other good restaurants around here. -I can't get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very minute. Surely you could fit one more table in. -Not unless you'd like me to put you in the hall, sir. -That's better than nothing. |
