5.Imagine living in a country torn by war.Or maybe you live in a place where there are few jobs and little chance to earn a living.Your family decides to move-not to another town, but to another country. You and your family have become immigrants.People are called immigrants when they move to a foreign country to make their homes.People become immigrants for many reasons. The most common one is economic opportunities. Most immigrants are attracted to other countries by the promise of jobs, farmland,or business opportunities.
Other people become immigrants in order to get away from mistreatment or natural disasters. They are refugees. Some refugees move to avoid wars and political unrest.Others are seeking freedom to express their religious views.Still others are uprooted by disasters, such as terrible flooding or drought.
Some people have become immigrants against their will.Captured in Africa, shipped foreign lands and forced to work as slaves, many early African immigrants to North and South America came in chains.
Except for Native Americans, all people came to the United States from someplace else. For nearly 500years,immigrants have landed on America's shores seeking a better life.Throughout American history, immigrants often worked low-paying,dangerous jobs that other people refused to do.
Immigrants from around the world helped shape American life. Many immigrants absorbed the customs and language common to most Americans. They also brought their own traditions, including music and foods.Over time, many of these traditions have become part of American life.
The first European immigrants to America hoped to colonize new lands.By the mid-1500s,Spaniards had ventured into Florida,California, and the American Southwest.French immigrants arrived in the early 1600s and built their first colony in Canada. The English also arrived in the early 1600s.They established 13colonies along America's AtlanticCoast.
In the 1700s,England became the major power in colonial North America. But many European immigrants came to live in the English colonies. They included people from Sweden,Holland,Germany,Scotland, and Ireland.
Immigrants still come to the United States seeking freedom and economic opportunities. Most new immigrants no longer come from Europe. They come mainly from Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Asia.
Today, the U.S.government limits the number of immigrants into the country each year.People who sneak illegally into the United States are called illegal immigrants, who,if caught, would be sent back to their home countries.

At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, inquiring into the attitudes of 1500distinguished people selected at random(随意)from Who's Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is common sense.
Common sense is the most widely possessed quality of the people surveyed.Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61percent say that common sense is very important in contributing to their success.
To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to remove extra ideas and get right to the key points of what matters.A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way:"The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important."
Is common sense a quality a person is born with,or can you do something to increase it?The oil man's answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He owes this to learning how to debate in school.Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their-and your own-mistakes.
Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success:knowing your field,self-reliance,intelligence,the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out.If you develop these qualities, you'll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who's Who someday.

There is growing dissatisfaction toward rich people, according to a new online poll.
The poll by China Daily in collaboration with Sina.com has highlighted the apparent discontent over the country's widening income gap.
Nearly 8,000people filled in online questionnaires last week, and when asked to use three words to describe society's rich, the top responses were"extravagant","greedy"and"corrupt".
About 57percent of those polled said that"extravagant"was the best word to describe the rich, followed closely by"greedy".
Ironically,in spite of their dissatisfaction,93percent of those polled wished they could be rich too,and that richer people should be"socially responsible".
Around 33percent of respondents also praised rich people for being"smart".
Nearly 90percent of respondents agreed that most people in society, including themselves, were willing to speak up for the poor but were unwilling to take action and actually do something for them.
The survey comes on the heels of a heated debate over comments made by renowned economist Mao Yushi, who said he was"speaking for the rich and working for the poor".
A report released by the Asian Development Bank last Wednesday revealed that China's Gini coefficient(基尼系数)-an indicator of the wealth divide-rose from 0.407in 1993to 0.473in 2004.
An earlier CASS report said that the richest 10percent of Chinese families now own more than 40percent of all private assets, while the poorest 10percent share less than 2percent of the total wealth.
The country's income disparity(悬殊) is close to that of Latin America, the report which came out in January, said.
