[1] It’s 9 a.m, the morning rush hour in Toronto. A man has fallen down on a downtown street suddenly. Several passersby stop to help the man. One woman reaches into her purse for her cell phone and hits 911, the emergency number. Three minutes later, sirens (警报) are heard in the distance as a police car, an ambulance and a fire truck race to the area. Within ten minutes, the stricken man is in the back of an ambulance and went to the hospital for life-saving treatment.

[2] This scene is fairly common in Toronto and other major cities. Over the years, cities have developed systems to respond quickly to emergencies. It has resulted in many lives being saved. But none of this __________ without the cooperation of car drivers who yield (让路) to emergency vehicles on busy downtown streets. In fact, it’s against the law for drivers not to yield.

[3] To yield means to give away or, more specifically, to get out of the way. It means pulling to the side of the road to let others pass. As yet, China does not have any specific laws that require drivers to yield, whether it is for slower cars to move over to the inside lane of a highway or for all cars to give way to emergency vehicles. Recently, an injured Beijing cyclist died on the way to hospital because the ambulance carrying him got stuck in city traffic. Drivers did not yield when they heard the ambulance’s siren.

[4] In Canada, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle can result in a fine of $400-$2,000 and reduction of three points off your license. That’s for a first offence. A second offence results in a bigger fine, the loss of your driver’s license for two years and a possible jail sentence. The punishment is severe because lives are in danger.

[5] Safe driving depends on drivers being aware of the traffic around them and yielding when necessary. And yielding to emergency vehicles only makes sense. It saves lives and, who knows, someday it may save your own.

[1]When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear , what to eat and which activities to participate in . As a result they develop confidence and independence.

[2]As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continues to try new activities . Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.

[3] One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In camp setting, a good counselor(顾问) will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate, Something as simple as clean-up , is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working sogether which in turn results in friendship.

[4] The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships .These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities. Children learn to see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look.      (1)Our character, basically, is a mixture of our habits. "Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action,
reap a habit;________, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny (命运)," the maxim goes.
(2)Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are  often unconscious patterns, they
constantly daily affect our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.
(3)As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, "Habits are like a cable. We weave a rope of it
everyday and soon it cannot be broken." I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I
know habits can be learned and unlearned. But we also know it isn't a quick fix. It involves a process
and a tremendous effort.
(4)Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were shocked as we saw the first men
walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts had to break out of the
tremendous gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first
few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half million miles.
(5)Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull- more than most people realize or would admit.
Breaking deeply developed habitual tendencies such as procrastination(拖延) , impatience, criticalness,
or selfishness that go against basic principles of human effectiveness involves more than a little willpower
and a few minor changes in our lives. "Lift off" takes a tremendous effort, but once we break out of the
gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new situation.
(6)Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our
habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps
our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force,
and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the order necessary to establish
effectiveness in our lives.
