But for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage."
You can always start the conversation."
3.B  根据后面的…as these interests would always bring you and your friend together.以及Hanging out will…
4.G  根据空格前面…try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend"不要让你的朋友对你的电话,短信或拜访感到有压力,这样很可能会使对方疲惫不堪.
5.D  根据空格前面句意…to allow your friends to be themselves"要允许你的朋友们做他们自己",以及空格后面句式Try not to…

17.[1]Many foreign students report feeling lonely or unwelcome in Australia.Those feelings are among the reasons why Australia is taking a close look at its international education industry.But wherever international students go,making friends may not always be easy.Elisabeth Gareis of Baruch College in New York surveyed four hundred fifty-four international students.They were attending four-year colleges and graduate schools in the American South and Northeast.
[2]Students from English-speaking countries and from northern and central Europe were more likely to be happy with their friendships.But thirty-eight percent of the international students said they had no close friends in the United States.And half of the students from East Asia said they were unhappy with the number of American friends they had.Professor Gareis says thirty percent said they wished their friendships could be deeper and more meaningful.
[3]Professor Gareis says:"Students from East Asia have cultures that are different on many levels from the culture in the United States.But then there's also language problems,and maybe some social skills,such as small talk,that are possibly not as important in their native countries,where it's not as important to develop friendships with small talk.Many East Asian students blamed themselves for their limited friendships with Americans,for not speaking the language well enough,not knowing the culture well enough."
[4]VOA's Student Union blogger Jessica Stahl did her own survey to find out how American students and foreign students relate to each other.More than one hundred students,about half of them American,answered her online questions.Half of the international students and sixty percent of the Americans said they related as well or better to the other group than to their own group.
[5]Professor Gareis says students who make friends from their host country return home happier with their experience.
[6]Professor Gareis says:"International students who make friends with host nationals are,overall,morepleased with their stay in the host country.They have better language skills,they have better academic performance and they have better attitudes toward the host country."

7.This Mother's Day will be the 8th year I have spent without my own mother.She passed away less than a month before Mother's Day in the year 2000.She had been ill for almost two years,and I didn't cry when she died,or at her funeral,but on that first Mother's Day without her.On that day,I realized that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
She still lives in family memories,in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers,in the values she had instilled in her children,and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli and irises.Each fall she would dig the bulbs out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper.The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted.It seemed like a lot of effort to me,but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before.She put the same hard work into caring for her family,instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play,compassion,and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share anecdotes about your mother's life at your Mother's Day party.Too often,we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away,fearful that we will unearth sad feelings. It doesn't have to be that way.Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old.Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of the grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of.Sharing anecdotes to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity,and may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.

10.Cell phones are everywhere-everywhere except Aztec High School.
A new policy put in place at the beginning of the school year by the Aztec School Board forbade cell phones from the school's campus.
"They are interrupting the educational process,"said Kirk Carpenter,the Aztec High School headmaster."There is no educational benefit from having them here."
The new policy started recently afrer long discussions between school and district managers.Aztec school officials said that cell phone use had become a problem during testing sessions.
Carpenter said,"There are also a lot of issues with cell phones.The bottom line(问题的关键) is that they are not in line with what we are trying to do bere,which is providing an education for our students."
Although the headmaster has heard of no serious objections to the new rule, the complaint he hears most often is parents'being concerned about contacting students directly in case of an emergency.
"That actually slows down the process,"said Carpenter."If a parent calls a student's cell phone,it still needs to go through the office.We can't just let the student leave school.We don't know who is on the line.They will still need to call the office to get their children free to leave."
"If you need to contact a student,you can     and they will give a message to the student.It still works well,"he added.
Aztec official Linda Paul said,although she never imagined the effect cell phones would have on education,she supports the decision made by the school.Paul added that AHS is not the only campus in the district to have taken such measures.
Cell phone use for teachers,of course,is a different matter."We hope our teachers know enough not to be on the phone during class,"Paul said."I have never seen one of my teachers on the phone during class."
