16.Years ago we said that LEDs would be something in the future.But as time goes on,LEDs have become the present because of rapidly falling prices and improving quality.We've firmly entered the LED period,as Lloyd showed with his experience of changing 100% of his lights to LEDs.
The physics Nobel Prize in 2014was given to three well-known Japanese scientists-Isamu Akasaki,Hiroshi Amano,and Shuji Nakamura-who invented the blue LED and made LEDs truly reach their potential as a mass-market light source.
As we can know,LEDs take the lead in the competition when it comes to efficiency(效率).Most LED lights that you can buy right now can't reach the 300watt shown here,but this is what we know it can be achieved,and over the coming years we should gradually move closer to that goal.
Why was blue so important?Because without it,we couldn't make high-quality white light from LEDs.Red and green LEDs have been around for a long time but blue was really missing.Thanks to the blue LED we now can get white light sources which have very high energy efficiency and very long lifetime.
With good use of LEDs,the world's electricity used for lighting can be reduced greatly.But energy-efficiency isn't the only thing.Material efficiency is also very important for LEDs.A LED can last up to 100,000hours,compared to 10,000hours for fluorescent(荧光)lights and 1,000for incandescent bulbs (白炽灯泡).This means that only a small part of the bulbs need to be produced over time.That can greatly reduce the costs.Using LEDs,the quality of light is also improved,so that people can better see when they're out at night.

My face,hands,and knees crashed into the pavement.The pain in my mouth was unbearable,and I tasted blood.I turned towards Mary who was on the ground,holding her knee and crying.Seconds later,it seemed that my mom's car stopped next to us.I wanted Mom to say,"Oh,my poor sweetheart.Let me hug you and everything will be fine."
However,my mom only said,"What have you done to your face?Vanessa,look at what you've done!"Mom wasn't the gentle"I love you,sweetie"type.
Sometimes,I thought Mom had no mercy.But in her own way,she was holding me tighter than I could understand-she was teaching me the lesson I needed."You did it-deal with it and learn from it.One day,the results will be greater and I won't be there to help you.Think it out,Vanessa."

13.People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.
Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning (断奶) in either"summer"light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or"winter"cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark.A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.
Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group.
After 28 days,it turns out the summerborn mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winterborn mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks.
The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.
"We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,"said study researcher McMahon."If the mechanism (机制) similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, the n it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality."
32.How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?
