2.One summer on my way to New Orleans,I passed a young man standing by the roadside,with his thumb out for a lift.I drove right by him.Now you're a fool for helping."I don't want to get involved"seems to have become a national motto.
Several days later I was thinking about the hitchhiker, about how I didn't even move my foot off the accelerator(加速踏板)for him.
"Does anyone stop any more?"I wondered.Blanche Dubois once said:"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."Was that possible these days?One way to test this would be for a person to journey across the US without any money,just relying on the others'good will.What would happen?
The idea interested me.So I decided to really do it.Without a penny,for six weeks I hitched 82rides and covered 4,223miles across 14states.I would only accept offers of rides,food and places to sleep.
I found people were generally  compassionate.Hearing I had no money and would accept none,people bought me food and gave me necessities.Those who had the least to give often gave the most.In Nebraska,a house painter named Mike noted the freezing weather and gave me a big army-style jacket.A lumber-mill worker in Michigan named Tim invited me to a simple dinner with his family in their shabby house.Then he offered me a tent.
I was treated kindly everywhere I went,amazed by people's readiness to help a stranger and feeling grateful to all the warm-hearted people.My faith in ordinary folks was renewed.It turns out you can still depend on the kindness of strangers.

12.The early lack of exposure to science,technology,engineering and mathematics (STEM) can be harmful to achieving gender (性别)balance in these fields.It begins when we are young and continues throughout our time in high school.
While at home,girls generally don't get to experience the level of exposure or encouragement in STEM fields that their male counterparts do.It is often subtle,but it's the first hurdle that faces and confuses so many women.Boys,on the other hand,get on their path,and are encouraged to do so,generally earlier than girls.For example,boys are more often given science sets as toys,which spark an interest in these subjects.
In school 3boys are often pushed to take the more challenging math and science classes.So if we want to attract the best and brightest minds into the fields that will advance us as a people?a country,and a planet,we can no longer look to only half of the population.Young girls cannot possibly consider opportunities they do not know exist.If girls are not exposed to certain subject and career paths,they are highly unlikely to choose to follow them in college.
Our bias(偏见)toward girls9either from families or from schools,is so rooted in our culture that we often don't even recognize it.Although the situation Has changed greatly in the past 20or 30years,there is still a sense that girls aren't as good at math 9for instance 9even though there is almost no evidence to support such a belief.
It is important that as a society we deal with gender stereotypes long before young people are faced with a decision to declare or choose a major in college.Without making efforts to break them,we are limiting the potentials of our youth,both male and female.Providing the necessary resources,exposure,and encouragement would help young women understand that their gender shouldn't determine the career path they choose,and that pursuing a STEM career does not make them less feminine.

Eventually, though,we all finish our short prayers and dig in.To be sure,the day includes other highlights-visiting with family and watching football.But usually around 6pm we are all ourselves stuffed like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in.

Studies show that the more children diet, the more likely they are to become obese as adults.Research also shows that girls are highly influenced by their mothers when it comes to eating habits and body image.
This was the case for Carly,40,who blames her mother for her lifelong struggle with weight."My mother was on a diet the whole time 1 was growing up,"she says."And she put me on my first diet when 1 was 10.I lost puppy fat, gained her approval and never ate normally  again,America's First Lady clearly has a vital healthy eating message to.convey.But could this be damaging for Malia and Sasha?Could they develop eating disorders because of it?
"It's wrong just to blame mothers for their daughters'eating disorders,"says Susan Ringwood, chief executive of the eating disorders charity,Beat."There is a genetic(基因的)component to eating disorders."However,"We do know that parents have a very strong influ.ence over a child's eating. It's important to realize that you are your daughter's role model.Girls idolize the ir mothers."says Ringwood.
"Nofoodshould ever be‘good'or‘bad',"Ringwood says.Instead,"You have to make it clear that food is a sociable, healthy and fun part of life, not something to be feared."
"Talk to her about body image,"Ringwood says."Talk about how curves are an important and exciting part of being a woman.Show her that anorexic(厌食的)fashion models are not sexy, but i11.The pressure on girls today is immense,"she says."But don't forget that you are the authoritative voice, too."
