I believe I’ve gotten this more than once. One lady told me she thought I was 12 and even told her 14-year-old daughter the same. I saw lots of surprised faces because people were told I was actually 19 years old.

I’m actually 19 years old, which isn’t much of a problem. I’m like the oldest of my friends and the shortest, which is pretty funny. That’s probably one of the reasons I fit in so well with them.

I volunteered at a weekend school teaching young children. Parents always looked me up and down like “why is this 13-year-old girl teaching my child?!??!?” I guessed it was because I’m also petite(娇小)，and I didn’t know whether I had a childish face…??? Sometimes I found it funny, sometimes I found it annoying(令人气恼). But I just shrugged(耸肩)it off at last. You know, soon enough people got to know me and then realized I was not actually a 13-year-old girl.

This short thing used to be a problem for me, though. I was very very small when I was younger, so kids would pick on me. When I was 12, 8-year-old girls would look down at me like “I CAN’TBELIEVEYOU’RETWELVE!” I had always wanted to be tall. But now that I'm older, I got used to it, and I actually love it. You know, I'm fun sized!

I believe that everyone in the world loves their mother. So am I. My mother is  a  ordinary  teacher.  She works  hard at  school,  just as other mothers do every day. In fact, she isn’t good health. She have been suffering from arthritis(关节炎) for  many years. In spite of this, she never stops working or giving up hope. I still remember the day and when my mother received a card of congratulations for Teacher’s Day from her director. The card was read “Thank you for your hard works; Happy Teacher’s Day to you!” At that moment, I was so moving that tears came to my eyes. The other day at the supermarket, I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed. A little smack (掴打) on his bottom would have done the job, I thought.

Teenagers also cause discipline problems. As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with him. So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said: “Why don’t you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”

My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not. The last I heard, she had run away from home again.

    The list goes on and on. Could it be that today’s parents are softer and believe that they must not rod (棍棒惩罚) their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree. I believe it is the parents’ duty to discipline the children even at a young age.

    My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary. Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined. Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged for child abuse (虐待). However, my daughter paid me the greatest compliment when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.
