It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually did. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

15.There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise.Some people believe that they can't help putting on weight as they get older,while others hold that if they stop exercising,their muscles will turn into fat.Here are some more myths:
I'll never lose weight---I come from a fat family
Wrong!While we can't change the body type we are born with,we can't blame our genes for making us fat.There's plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families,and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly
Wrong!Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陈代谢).If fact,although fat people consume more energy that slim people,they also fail to realize how much they eat!Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.
Exercise is boring
Wrong!Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively.The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that's fun as well as progressive.If you enjoy a Sunday walk,take a different route.If you do Yoga,try a tai chi class.If you like swimming,set a distance or time challenge.
No pain,no gain.
Wrong!Exercise is not meant to hurt.Indeed,pain is your body telling you something's wrong,and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury.You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly,but when your body adapts to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly.If you don't,rest and seek medical advice.

24.What does the author think about being fat?C
A.It is the family genes that make people fat.

25.According to the author,how can we make exercise more interesting?A
A.By taking varied exercise.
B.By choosing simple exercise.
C.By doing regular exercise.
D.By sticking to outdoor exercise.
26.What is the author's opinion about"No pain,no gain"in exercising?A

12.Driving in traffic can be extremely stressful.Pedestrians appear out of nowhere, cars suddenly pull out of parking spots, and roads become slippery due to rain or snow.Knowing when to brake and when to accelerate in such situations is hard enough for a human driver, let alone a robotic one.But several carmakers-and a few tech companies-are working to convince drivers to let driverless cars take the wheel.
Without question, the most anticipated benefit of driverless cars is improved safety.Driverless systems will feature sensors that detect safety threats that human drivers might miss. Many carmakers already offer systems that alert drivers whenever they get dangerously close to other cars.
Also, driverless systems have the benefit of increased efficiency.Driverless cars won't waste as much gas as human drivers do,and guided by advanced GPS,they'll always take the fastest route.Once driverless cars become widely available, common people can have their own driver, and they'll just sit back and relax while their car's computer takes the wheel!
Although completely driverless cars won't be on the market for several years, the technology behind them is already appearing in phases. Two examples are the Active Lane Keeping Assist option for Mercedes-Benz cars and Ford's Traffic Jam Assist. In the first option, the system warns the driver whenever the car crosses lane markings by causing the steering wheel to vibrate(振动).In the second option, the system helps the car keep pace with other cars while remaining in its current lane. The system is being developed to help relieve blocking on busy roads.
Several carmakers claim that they'll produce driverless cars within the next decade. But critics aren't so sure, warning that a completely driverless car must be able to make split-second decisions in even the most complex traffic situations. In addition, the car's computer must become smart enough to know when to ask the driver to intervene (介入,干涉) to prevent an accident.
Full government approval won't happen until driverless cars are proven safe.In the meantime, expect to see carmakers offer ever-smarter features on their new models.
(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS)
78.One of the factors that make traffic extremely stressful is thepedestrians appearing out of nowhere/cars pulling out of parking spots/slippery roads due to rain or snow
79.What are the benefits of driverless system?Improved safety and increased efficiency
80.What will happen to a car with the Active Lane Keeping Assist when it crosses lane markings? The steering wheel will vibrate.
81.Driverless cars won't be on the market until they canmake split-second decisions and know when to ask the driver to intervene.
9.People with an impulsive personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first.According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia,such people may be more likely to have food addiction.The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren't necessarily overweight,but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food,and therefore,less healthy weight.
Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use.Studies have linked the dopamine (多巴胺) release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances.
Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits (特点).Two of these traits,known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance,were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI (身体质量指数) during the study.
Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions.Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs.For others,it could mean eating to feel better.Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks.People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior,which could also cause obesity.
"Impulsiveness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,"said Dr.Ashley Gearhardt,a clinical psychologist.He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people."We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing,then our measure,the Yale Food Addiction Scale,should be related to helping control impulsive action,"said Gearhardt.
Clinical psychologist Dr.James MacKillop,whose lab was conducting the study,believes that therapies used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits.
"Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious things,which are clearly diet and exercise,"MacKillop said."It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily."

12.According to Paragraph 1,the result of food addiction isA.
A.less healthy weight  B.motivation to lose weight
C.negative emotions    D.taking alcohol or drugs
13.How does the author introduce the two personality traits in Paragraph 4?D
A.By making comparisons and conclusions. B.By explaining causes and effects.
C.By presenting questions and answers.   D.By giving definitions and examples.
14.What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text?B
A.It has been successfully carried out among overweight people.
B.It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight.
C.It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people.
D.It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?C
A.Dopamine release caused by food addiction
B.Food addiction compared to drug use
C.Impulsive personality linked to food addition
D.Food addiction contributing to obesity.
10.Le Whif,an inhaler (吸入剂) that allows chocolate lovers to meet their needs whenever they please without putting on weight,is to be on market in British stores.The invention,called the world's first breatheable food,lets consumers suck in the taste of chocolate or coffee while taking on less than one calorie.Its makers claim it will enable dieters to enjoy their favorite snacks without worrying about their waistline.
The lip-stick-style tube contains hundreds of milligrams of tiny food particles (粒子) which are small enough to be carried by air,but too large to enter the lungs.Each Le Whif contains enough flavor for about eight to ten whiffs (一阵气味) and costs﹩1.99 on its own,or﹩4.99 a pack of three.The inhaler is available in chocolate as well as coffee flavor.
It was invented by Prof.David Edwards.He said Le Whif was not designed to replace food but could be used to increase dining experiences,such as allowing people to try a variety of dishes from restaurant menus before ordering their meal.
He said,"In terms of living on whiffing,we aren't even close to being there.But there clearly has been a revolution over the last few years where we are eating smaller amounts of food more frequently,and choosing food for its aesthetic (审美的) pleasure.We will be launching new whiffing experiences probably every six months.It is reasonable to predict that the next line of whiffing products will be even more health centered."
The product came onto market in Paris in 2009and the first production run of 25,000inhalers were sold out within a month.It has since been made available across France and in the US.In Britain Le Whif is to be sold firstly in House of Fraser for a month,after which it could become more widely distributed.
