题目内容

9.In the dining room of my grandfather's house stood a massive grandfather clock.Meals in that dining room were a time for four generations to become one.The table was always spread with food containing love as the main ingredient(成分).And that grandfather clock stood like an old family friend,watching over the laughter that was a part of our lives.
As a child,the old clock fascinated me.I watched and listened to it during meals.Even more wonderful to me was my grandfather's ritual.He wound(上发条) that clock with a special key carefully each day.That key was magic to me.It kept our family's magnificent clock ticking and chiming.I remember watching as my grandfather took the key from his pocket and opened the hidden door in the clock.He inserted the key and wound-not too much,nor too little.He never let that clock wind down and stop.He showed us grandchildren how to open the door and let us each take turns winding the key.I remember the first time I did it I was so excited to be part of this family ritual.
After my grandfather died,it was days after the funeral before I remembered the clock!"Mama!The clock!We've let it wind down."The tears flowed freely when I entered the dining room.The clock stood there quiet.It even seemed smaller without my grandfather's special touch.
Some time later,my grandmother gave me the clock and the key.The old house was quiet.No laughter over the dinner table,no ticking or chiming of the clock-all was still.I took the key in my shaking hand and opened the clock door.All of a sudden,I was a child again,watching my grandfather with his silver-white hair and blue eyes.He was there,winking at me,at the secret of the clock's magic,at the key that held so much power.
I stood,lost in the moment for a long time.Then slowly and carefully I inserted the key and wound the clock.I sprang to life.Tick-Tock,tick-tock,life and chimes were breathed into the dining room,into the house and into my heart.In the movement of the hands of the clock,my grandfather lived again.

7.A few months ago,I was picking up the children at school.Emily,another mother that I knew well,rushed up to me.She was filled with anger."Do you know what you and I are?"she demanded.Before I could answer,she gave out the reason for her question.She had just returned from renewing her driver's license at a government office.Asked by the woman recorder to state her job,Emily hesitated,uncertain how to classify herself."What I mean is,"explained the woman,"do you have a job,or are you just a…?""Of course I have a job,"answered Emily."I'm a mother.""We don't list‘mother'as an occupation…‘housewife'covers it,"said the recorder emphatically (强调地).
I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation.This time it was at our own Town Hall.The clerk was a woman."And what is your occupation?"she asked.What made me say it,I do not know.The words simply jumped out."I'm…a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."The clerk paused,her ball-point pen frozen in mid air,and looked up as though she had not heard right.I repeated the title slowly.
"Might I ask,"said the clerk with new interest,"just what you do in your field?"Coolly,I heard myself reply,"I have a continuing program of research in the laboratory and in the field.I'm working for my masters (the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters).I often work 14hours a day (24is more like it).But the job is more challenging than most jobs and the rewards are in satisfaction rather than just money."
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form,stood up and personally showed me out.As I drove into our driveway,I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13,7,and 3.And upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (six months) in the child-development program.I felt successful.
Motherhood…what a glorious career, especially when there is a title on the door.

4.A Kindle is a product from Amazon which allows you to download books and read them anywhere,without having to carry around lots of heavy books.It is also really useful when you go on holiday if you read a lot and quickly.
I bought my Kindle two years ago after seeing my sister with one.Before,I didn't want one,as I love the satisfaction that comes from reading a book from cover to cover.However,one day,after using my sister's I fell in love with it.It is easy to download any book you can imagine from the website.One minute you see the book online,the next it is in your hands.And you can read a wide range of books-from classic books such as Pride and Prejudice and works by Shakespeare,to modern comedy books.
Another thing I love about the Kindle is the  privacy. You can read absolutely anything on there and nobody will know! For example,if you want to read a book which might be advertised as a children's book, you can secretly read it and everyone will believe you are reading a deeply thoughtful novel!
Reading a Kindle gives you a chance to escape the real world.You can also do this with normal books,but the secrecy and excitement of downloading a new book onto your device adds to the magic.
This doesn't mean I have completely given up reading physical books.I still love them.I often go into old bookshops and find a well-known novel for£1,or borrow old books from my grandfather's library.There is a worry that with all this new technology there will no longer be a place for physical books,which would be a crying shame.So,I definitely recommend getting yourself a Kindle,but please,don't forget about physical books,either!
