I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish,
I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for
good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes-anything to enrich my thought and
make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that
a person could not have a "complicated idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the
words without recognizing either its irony(嘲讽)or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to
make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have
read several times.(How, after all, could one read a book more than once?)And I included only those
books over a hundred pages in length.(Could anything shorter be a book?)
There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an
English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books
of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life," the professor told the reporter with finality

(firmly), "these books have made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn't ignore. I kept
the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly
understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the
introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience
and superstition(迷信)of a schoolboy,      I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached
the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off
my list

A. explain why it was included in the list
B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list

4. The writer provides two book lists to _______.

A. show how he developed his point of view

I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so small as she muscled her way through
the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would
often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball.
I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just
over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice
her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation she said, "I want
to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I
want to be the best. My daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count. "Well, I had to
give it to her-She was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school.
Every week, she led her school team to victory.
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms.I walked across the street
and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came a soft
reply, "I am just too short." The coach told her that at 5'5" she would probably never get to play for a
top ranked team-much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college. She was
heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had
talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did
not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing
could stop her except one thing-her own attitude.
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was
offered a scholarship and on the college team. She was going to get the college education that she had
dreamed of.

I remember that when I was in my teens, I used to go against many of the Dos and Don'ts my
parents taught me.For example, when I kept playing jazz records on the player, my father would
think of such music as making noise and replace  them with disks of classical music that I always
considered extremely dull.
My mom and dad were also very particular about the friends I went out with, always saying that
"One rotten (腐烂) apple could ruin a whole barrel of apples". When I insisted on sleeping with my
pet dog, they immediately said NO because they thought that I would be bitten by fleas (跳蚤).
These are just a few examples of many of the things that I thought my parents were unreasonable
about.Today, however, I am a father of a boy of sixteen, and I find that I, too, am pressuring my son
with a lot of rules that he seems to find hard to accept. The other day, I noticed that my son's hair was
too long, so I told him to go to the barber's and get it cut short.Usually, he is fairly obedient, but this
time he put_his_foot_down."What's wrong with my long hair?I don't think you have the right to order
me to cut it short, even if you're my father!"
When I was a boy, if I had spoken in such a way to my father, he would have taught me a good
lesson. But now we are living in a world with more freedom. My son's insistence on wearing his long
hair was only an example of the generation gap that existed between us.So I tried to be more
understanding and now he still wears his long hair.

3. The underlined phrase "put his foot down" in the third paragraph means ________.
A. obeyed
B. insisted
C. accepted
D. left
4. The writer thinks that________.
A. parents should be more strict with their children

I am a good mother to three children.I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being
a good parent.
I no longer consider myself the center of the universe.I show up.I listen.I try to laugh.I am a good
friend to my husband.I have tried to make marriage vows(誓约) mean what they say.I am a good friend
to my friends, and they to me.Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.
So here's what I want to tell you today:get a life.A real life, not a desire of the next promotion(提升),
the bigger paycheck and the larger house.
Get a life in which you are not alone.Find people you love, and who love you.And remember that love
is not leisure(休闲) but work.Pick up the phone.Send an email.Write a letter. And realize that life is the
best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.
It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of
living.
I learned to live many years ago.Something really, really bad happened to me, something that
changed my life.If I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all.And what I learned from it is
what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.
I learned to love the journey, not the destination.I learned to look at all the good in the world and tried
to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by
telling others what I had learned.
By telling them this:read in the backyard with the sun on your face.Learn to be happy. And think of life
as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live with joy and passion(激情) as it ought to be lived.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I
thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admit, it
was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remember thinking "What do I know about
being a grandmother? -I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!" I don't like to be unprepared, so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn't. But I couldn't quite
figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny,
as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of
grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny:
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of
cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar
down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller, if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to
Granny 's house was check the cookie jar and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing Pd do is get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar and on my granddaughte' s first Christmas, my daughter
bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me, her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.
