What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red? ___1___ . Do you prefer greys and
blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously
studying the meaning of colour preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings.
___2___ . If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
___3___ . A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green
one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. ___4___ . A black bridge over
the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area---until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it
would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.
___5___ . It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.

A. On the other hand, black is depressing.
B. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite colour as we grow up --- we are
     born with our preference.
C. The rooms are painted in different colours as you like.
D. If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement.
E. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active.
F. Life is like a picture or a poem, full of different colours.
G. Colours do influence our moods---there is no doubt about it

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do
not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, " Happiness depends upon ourselves." In
other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time
thinking about future - for example, getting into college or getting a good job - that we fail to enjoy the
present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite
music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and
healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget
about your problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping
others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel
happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy
food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

1. The best title of the passage is ___________.

A. Money Make You Happy
B. The Secrets of Happiness
C. Ideas for Helping Other People to Be Happy
D. Good Friends Make You Happy

2. The writer thinks that _____________

A. everyone knows how to live a happier life
B. it's wrong to spend time on work
C. hobbies take up too much time
D. doing good things for someone can make you happier.

A. Reading a good book
B. Traveling to a foreign country
C. Playing a sport
D. Spending time with close friends

A.The secret of the writer's success
B. A write with enduring popularity
C. Well-received creation toencourage Brits
D. The insight into human nature
E. Writing styles in different stages
F. The story appreciate for school students
1. _____
Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of  England's great writers. Yet for many his language is
old-fashioned and his story plots often improbable. Why, Dickens, out of so many other great English
writers, has made the list? How then to explain Dickens's enduring popularity?
2. _____
One reason undoubtly is the British government's insistence that every child studies a Dickens novel at
school. Alongside Willian Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a compulsory (必读的) writer on every
English literature school reading list. His stories, though often over-long by today's standard, are superbly
written moral tales. They are filled with colorful characters.
3. _____
But what makes his books stand out from other English writers is his insight into human nature.
Dickens, like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior that are as true to citizens of the 21st
century as they were to his readers in the 19th century. Readers have returned to Dickens's books again
and again over the years to see what he has to say about readers'own time.
4.  _____
The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television drama that
introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and money, it was the
perfect story to illustrate the bad times. No surprise then that it was Dickens Britons turned to, during the
economic crisis last year, to make sense of world rapidly falling apart.
5. _____
Readers of the 19th and early 20th century usually prized Dickens's earlier novels for their humor
and pathos (悲痛). While recognizing the virtues of these books, critics today tend to rank more highly
the later works because of  their formal coherence and acute perception( 洞察力) of the human
condition. For as long as Dickens's novels have something to say to modern audiences, it seems likely
that he will remain one of Britain's best loved writers.

①Some people who find themselves facing a problem react by just giving up.But it is not good to
escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young
people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations, developing
new skills,and testing their abilities.
②If you are unhappy about something, face it.Try to state the problem in a few words,so  that you
will know exactly what you are_up_against.Then see if you can "put your finger" on the cause of your
unhappiness.
③In many eases,we only "think" there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can
overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.
④For example,a boy wanted to be a debater (辩论家). When he tried out for the debating team as
a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless. He was shy; he had a highpitched voice; and his posture
(体态) was poor.Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity
to debate. He studied successful speakers and evaluated his own weaknesses and advantages. Then he
spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture
and at speaking clearly.By his junior year,he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he
was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his
problem.
⑤Although direct attack is often the bestway to meet problems,we have to be realistic (现实的) in
judging situations.Sometimes it is necessary to change either the method or the goal.
⑥A boy who wants to be a great football player may not be too strong and not quite fast enough for
football. In this situation, becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him. However,
he may become outstanding in tennis or golf, and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.
⑦A girl who is not goodlooking may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she
may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation,
she must change her method of achieving her goal.
⑧So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the
situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

1. From the first paragraph,we can learn that________.

A. it is really hard to escape from problems
B. people can solve all the problems that they meet
C. it is important for people to face the problems
D. few people like making excuses for failures

2. The underlined phrase "are up against" in the second paragraph could be best replaced by______.

A. are interested in
B. are faced with
C. come over
D. look after

3. Which decision was made by the boy who wanted to be a debater?

A. Adjusting the goal.
B. Judging situations.
C. Changing his styles.
D. Making a direct attack.

4. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

(①~⑧stand for "Paragraph 1~Paragraph 8")

5. The author showed the example of the girl in order to explain________.

A. how important the appearance is
B. how hard to develop a good personality
C. how to achieve the goal in a different way
D. how to win popularity in a short time

Getting paid for going to work may sound too good to be true, but it's part of an increasingly popular
scheme for commuters across Europe.
Employers in Belgium, the Netherlands and other European countries are rewarding staff if they come
to work on a bicycle, paying them for every kilometer they cycle, all in an effort to promote
environmentalism, not to mention a healthier lifestyle.
In Belgium, cycling commuters are being paid 20 euro cents (29 U. S. cents) per kilometer, whereas
those in the Netherlands can earn 15 cents and participants in Britain up to 20 pence (32 U. S. cents)
per mile-all of it taxfree.
In Belgium, a popular cycling nation and home to fivetime Tour de France and Giro D'Italia winner
Eddie Merckx, finance ministry figures show that more than 270,000 people took part in the scheme last
year, up from 140,000 in 2006.
Last year, that meant the Belgian taxman paid out 43 million euros to those who bill for cycling to
work.
"Higher oil prices and environmental awareness contribute to having more cyclists on the road," said
Dieter Snauwaert, coordinator of the biketowork scheme of the Flemish Cyclists' Union in Belgium.
One of the most successful corporate proponents has been Belgian discount supermarket chain
Colruyt, which launched the policy four years ago and now has 2,100 participants.
Colruyt provides employees who live up to 7 km away from work with a bicycle and takes care of
maintenance.
Company spokesman Victor De Meester said that apart from employees being healthier there were
also other advantages.
"The more people cycle to work the fewer parking spaces you have to offer. It's not so easy,
especially in urban areas, to expand parking spaces," he said.
Colruyt, which has more than 22,000 employees, is now looking to target those who live further away
than 7 km (4.4 miles) by offering electric bicycles to make it easier to negotiate larger distances.
"Our target is 400 participants by 2015 but given the response we have had so far this may be too
low a number," De Meester said.
Colruyt's belief that employees who cycle to work are healthier than their colleagues who don't is
backed up by research from Dutch organization TNO.
The researcher found that over the course of a year, cycling employees on average lose one working
day less due to illness than employees who commute by other means.
If the number of workers who cycle to work increased by one percent, Dutch employers would save
a total of 27 million euros per year, TNO said.

1. Which of the following can be the title of the passage?
A. The Most Successful Supermarket Chain
B. Getting Paid for Cycling to Work
C. Europeans: Enjoying a Healthier Lifestyle
D. Why Cycling Employees Have a Better Body

2. What's the purpose of the scheme?
A. To promote environmentalism.
B. To give money to the staff.
C. To increase the sale of bicycles.
D. To reduce the sale of electric bicycles.

3. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of the scheme?
A. It makes people have healthier bodies.
B. The employers make more profits.
C. It is friendly to our environment.
D. It needs more parking spaces.

4. The money the bicyclers obtain according to ________.
A. the kilometers they cycle
B. the brand of their bicycles
C. the tax they pay
D. the cost of their bicycles

5. What do we know about Belgian discount supermarket chain Colruyt?
A. All its workers are offered bicycles.
B. The charge of the bicycle maintenance is paid by the users.
C. It attaches great importance to the scheme.
D. It has the most participants.
