After the quake hit northeast Japan on March 11, many moving stories that I saw with my own eyes happened around me.

I had to walk home since all the  21  had stopped after the earthquake. On my way home I 22  an old lady at a bakery shop who was giving out free bread, which made my heart  23 . A man was holding a sign that said, “Please use our 24 .” He was 25  his house for people to go to the restroom.

My friend wanted to  26  others. He stood in the cold with a sign “If you’re okay with a motorcycle, I will  27  you to your house.” And then I saw him take one gentleman home, all the way to a faraway place!

The next day I drove to  28  my car with gas. There is a lack (缺乏) of 29  now and many gasoline stations are either closed or have very  30  lines. I got  31 , since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my 32 , the man smiled and said, “ 33  this situation, we are only giving $30 worth gas per person. Is that all right?” “ 34 . I’m just glad that we are all able to  35 ,” I said. His smile gave me so much comfort.

I saw a man at the evacuation (疏散) center 36  when people brought food to him. It was the first time in three days that food was brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next 37  surprised me. “I am very 38  that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t  39  any food at all. Please go to that center as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this  40 .

Not many foreigners can say that they have lived in China for as long as I have. Perhaps some can hack(应对) it for about two or three years and then they want to either go back home or move on to another country. As for me, I cannot get 36 of this place. I love it here so much and I honestly believe that I am very comfortable here. It feels just like 37. And, here 38 the story.

It was August 2001 and I had just said 39 to my family and friends as I 40 to Los Angeles International Airport to catch my 41 to Incheon, South Korea which would then 42 me to Beijing. When I arrived in LA I was very excited and a little 43 because I didn't know what to 44 when I arrived in China. It 45 like receiving a wrapped gift and you had no idea what was in it 46 you opened it. As I 47 the Korean Airlines 48 desk I gave the attendant(空乘人员) my ticket. He looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, sir. This flight was yesterday." I was in 49 and lost for words. The attendant told me I had to wait several hours until they could 50 whether I could get onto another flight.

I was so afraid at this time that I called my mother and frantically(狂乱地) told her," I missed my flight! I don't think I can go to 51! I'm better off going back to Washington, DC!" That's when she 52 I call my leader in China and ask whether I could still go there. Looking 53 all of the papers I found a phone number and called the Beijing office. 54, my leader was there and assured me I could still join the group. Also, KAL had a seat for me on the next flight. So, after 24 hours and a 55 in Korea, I arrived in Beijing. I don't know what my feeling was, but I wasn't tired because I had finally arrived and I just wanted to look around the city. As I traveled to the hotel in the car I saw all the wonderful buildings, friendly people and interesting sites. I was so happy to be here.

There is one language that is used in every country in the world. The people who use it are young and old, short and tall, thin and fat. It is everybody’s second language. It is easy to understand, although you can’t hear it. It is sign language.

When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly”, but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.”

Babies who can’t talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hands. He is using sign language.

Many years ago, a French priest(神父), Charles Michel de Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet (字母表). It is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. The only university for the deaf is Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.

Today, in the United States, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. The newsreader tells the news in sign language. At the same time, the words appear on the TV screen.

The actors in the Theatre of Deaf don’t spell every word. Sometimes they use hand signs. When they put two hands together, it means sandwich. They can make a roof with their hands when they want to show a house. One finger in front of an actor’s mouth can mean quiet. You can talk to people who are behind windows that are closed. And when you go swimming with your friends, you can have conversations under water.
