       The 21st Century, a newspaper ,published a report on March 19th on the population of Beijing who can use a foreign language ,mainly English .A chart in the report shows in 2003, only 1/4 of the population of Beijing felt they had mastery of a foreign language .In the next two years, there was a growth of four percent . In 2006, with the 29th Olympic Games drawing near, this number reached close to 32%.

       Another chart in the report shows over 26.3% of Beijingers think a foreign language is a must in both their work and their daily life ,especially when finding a job. In addition , about 39% of the people are learning or are willing to learn a foreign language for the coming Olympic Games, because they’re eager to do their part for it. The two numbers above made up nearly 2/3 of the total population of Beijing.

       It is believed that a much larger number will be added to the list as the city of Beijing being more international.
