解答 51.C  细节推理题.根据横线下面的那段话:Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with different noises, such as people coming and going.(避免让你的孩子边看电视边做作业或者在一些人来人往的嘈杂的地方做作业)可知,作者建议家长们让孩子在一个安静的地方做作业,故选C.
52.D  细节推理题.根据大标题:Make sure your child has all the materials he needs(确保你的孩子有所有他需要的资料)和横线前的Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some subjects and get them in advance.可知横线上是在举例详细说明,故选D.
53.E 细节推理题.根据大标题:Help your child use t ime properly.(帮助你的孩子合理地运用时间)和横线前的Tell them not to watch TV unless they finish their homework in time.(告诉你的孩子不要看电视知道他及时完成作业)可知在作者在此旨在告诉家长每天要在孩子完成作业后给孩子看电视的时间,故选E.
54.G 细节推理题.根据大标题:When your child asks for help, provide guidance(提供指导),not answers.和大标下的第一句话:Giving answers means your child will not learn the material可知家长在孩子遇到问题的时候可给予适当的引导而不是答案,所以过多的帮助孩子的学习实际上是有坏处的,故选G.
55.A  细节推理题.根据横线下面的第一句话:If your child has been successful in homework and is working hard, celebrate that success with a special event to make him happy.可知当孩子在作业上取得成功和努力学习的时候,家长们要表扬孩子在作业上的进步,故选A.

2.Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings(81)instead of satisfying hunger.Believe it or not,we've all been there.Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downed cookie after cookie while preparing(82)for a big test?But when done a lot-especially (83)without/before realizing it-emotional eating can affect weight,health,and overall well-being.
Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people(84)take steps to change it.One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it's caused by (85)negative feelings.Yes,people often turn to food when they're stressed out,lonely,sad,anxious,or bored.But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too,like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.Sometimes emotional eating is tied (86)to major life events,like a death or a divorce.More often,though,it's the countless little daily stresses (87)thatcause someone(88)to seek(seek) comfort in food.
We're all emotional eaters to a degree.But for some people emotional eating can be a real problem,(89)causing (cause) serious weight gain or other problems.The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone,the feelings that cause it remain.And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.That's(90)why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.
Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it.

In 1789,New York became the first capital of the United States of America but it remained the capital for only one year.Now,as I'm sure you know,Washington,D.C.is the capital of the country.

2.The Lionfish Invasion!
Lionfish are popular saltwater aquarium(水族箱) fish all over the world,especially in the United States.Nowadays,they also live in Atlantic waters off the East Coast of the United States.These lionfish are what scientists call an invasive(侵入的) species(物种) or an"alien invader."
Local divers off the coast of North Carolina were not expecting to see what they found one day in August 2002-the beautiful lionfish,common to the warm waters of the western Pacific,but unknown of the Carolina coast.They provided the first solid evidence that lionfish were in the Atlantic.
A year later,scientists documented 19lionfish sightings at eight locations along the North Carolina continental shelf.Then,lionfish were observed off the coasts of Florida,Georgia,and South Carolina,and even as far north as Long Island,New York!Between 2000and 2003,lionfish sightings were reported at 16different shipwrecks and natural hard bottom locations.During a summer 2004research expedition,NOAA(The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) scientists collected 155lionfish at 19different locations off the North Carolina coast alone.The jump in numbers and distributions over such a short time strongly indicates that the lionfish is reproducing in the Atlantic Ocean.If this is true,it's the first time that a western Pacific fish has populated the U.S.Atlantic coast.
These lionfish were likely released on purpose when people no longer wanted them!The swift and warm Gulf Stream,which transported the floating lionfish eggs from Florida northward,helped the lionfish's Atlantic journey.In Florida waters and along the continental shelf near the Gulf Stream the temperatures are very similar to the lionfish's native waters.
However,from north Florida upward,the waters along the coastline are too cold in the winter for lionfish to survive.Scientists expect them to survive the winter only at water depths greater than 120ft because this is where the Gulf Stream has influence all year long.Very importantly,the types of predators(食肉动物) and competitors present in the Atlantic are very different from the native range of the lionfish.Generally,the lionfish have not been found to endanger marine ecosystems because they were not likely to survive long.

9.Many people rush into the commitment of bringing home a four-legged family member, only to find out that they are not ready for a pet. This often results in the dog being turned over to a shelter where it may not find another home. This can be avoided if potential pet owners take the time to figure out if they are truly ready for the responsibilities of pet ownership.
Being a responsible pet owner involves a financial commitment that goes beyond buying dog food. There are also parasite (寄生虫) prevention, boarding costs while traveling and the cost to care for the pet should it become ill or injured. That is not to say that one must be rich in order to have a dog,but it is important to be prepared for the expenses that come with being a pet owner.
Another consideration is the time commitment. An owner away from home for 14 hours every day is not an ideal situation for a dog.A potential dog owner must also consider the time it takes to care for his or her pet,the time it takes to feed, walk, play with, bathe and clean up.Also, dogs require attention.Be prepared to spend time each day petting and playing with it.
Dogs are dogs, and will act like dogs. This includes barking, digging, having accidents in the house and, possibly, destroying some of the owner's prized possessions, such as furniture, shoes and cell phones. If the above would cause an owner to want to get rid of the dog, then he or she is not yet ready to be a pet owner. Many wonderful pets end up in shelters simply because they acted like dogs!
