Taste is suc.h a subjective matter that we dori't usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone's preference is that it's one person's opinion.But because the two bigcola companies-Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola-are marketed so aggressively, we've wondered how big arole taste-preference actually plays in brand loyalty.We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting.
we inwited staff wolunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi, Diet Coke.or Diet Pepsi.These were people who thought they'd have no trouble telling their brand from the oLher brancl.
We eventuallv located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers.Then we fed them with four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other.rOVe asked them to tell us whether each sample wa.s Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants' choices \~-ith what mere guesswork could have accom-plished.
Getting all four samples right was a tough test, biit not too tough, we thought, for people whobelieved they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 0ut of 19 regular cola drinkers correct-ly identified their brand of choice in all four trial.s. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7 out of 27 identified all four samples correctly.
Both groups did better than chance would predict, but nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times.Two people got all'four samples vrrong. Overall, hal.f theparticipants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so tiredness, or taste burn-out, was not a factor. Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.

Although man has known asbestos (石棉) for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160 years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H.W.Johns, owner of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers, was responsible for the opening of that first mine.
Mr.Johns was given a piece of asbestos which had been found in Italy. He experimented with the material and then showed its surprising powers to his customers. Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen.When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as you would expect a mineral to be.When it is separated, a strange thing happens: the rock breaks down into fine, soft, soapy fibres.
Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads, but they have found thousands of uses of this fireproof material, of the so-called “cloth of stone”.

John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching the high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.

Luckily he had a strong-willed caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son,you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.” She told him not to depend on others,including his mother. “You have to earn success,” she said. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”

These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15,to Chicago.

Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of words — as an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.

While others discouraged (使气馁) him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” She also let him pawn(典当)her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.

It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind: “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary!”

Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America — worth $150 million.
