1.Decision-making under Stress
A new review based on a research shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative (负面的) consequences of a decision.
The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways.
"Stress affects how people learn,"says Professor Mara Mather."People learn better about positive than negative outcomes under stress."
For example,two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像) with either rewards or punishments.In one experiment,some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in front of an audience; in the other,some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water.In both cases,the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accurately than those who hadn't gone through the stress.
This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress-at those moments,only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind.But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect.Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better,but negative consequences are also easily recalled.
The research also found that stress appears to affect decision-making differently in men and women.While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress,their responses to risk turn out to be different.
Men who had been stressed by the cold-water task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way.In stressful situations in which risk-taking can pay off big,men may tend to do better,when caution weighs more,however,women will win.
This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men:they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction.

68.We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend toB.

70.The research has proved that in a stressful situation,C.
A.women find it easier to fall into certain habits
B.men have a greater tendency to slow down
C.men are more likely to take risks

12.When young people in the United States gather for fun, there is a good chance that they will soon be dancing. If there are no musicians, they will play records. If there are no records, someone is certain to have a radio. One way or another there will be dancing.
The ways that boys and girls dance will often change every year or two.You may hear them say that the very latest steps are‘in',while last year's steps are‘out'.Each boy and girl takes pride in learning newest things. They feel that this is important to remain popular with their friends.
Years ago the dances of young people were not very different from those of their parents, but high school and college students of today have created their own music and have invented their own dances, thanks to people like Chubby Checker, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley. These musicians helped to make popular an exciting new kind of music that people began to dance to in a different way.
In the late 1950s Chubby Checker started a dance that he called the"twist."The twist, like so many new dances, was lively, and people who performed it used a lot of energy. The word chubby means"a little bit fat,"which is why this singer and dancer called himself Chubby.
After demonstrating his new dance hundreds of times, however,Chubby was no longer chubby. This is one of the advantages.Even if older people do not like the new dances, they must agree that people, get much more exercise from modern dances than they ever got from a waltz.

9.Complaints(投诉) should be made to a responsible person.Go back to the shop where you bought the goods, taking with you any receipt(收据) you may have.Ask to see the seller in a large store. In a small store the assistant may also be the owner so you can complain directly. In a chain store, ask to see the manager. If you telephone, ask the name of the pers on who handles your enquiry, otherwise you may never find out who deals with the complaint later.
Even the bravest person finds it difficult to stand up in a group of people to complain,so if you do not want to do it in person, write a letter.Stick to the facts and keep a copy of what you write. At this stage, you should give any receipt number, but you should not need to give receipts or other papers to prove you bought the article. If you are not satisfied with the answer you get,or if you do not get a reply, write to the managing director of the firm, store,or organization.Be sure to keep copies of your own letter and any you receive.
If your complaint is a just one,the shopkeeper may offer to replace or repair the faulty article. You may find it an attractive solution. In certain cases you may have the right to refuse the goods and ask for the money back, but this is when you have hardly used the goods and have acted at once.Even when you cannot refuse the goods you may be able to get some money back as well. And you have suffered some special loss,if,for example,a new washing machine tears your clothes, you might receive money to repair them.

16.If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and,as a result,we are growing old unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why quite healthy in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age,and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down.
With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University,he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages with different jobs.Computer technology helped the researchers to get most exact measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with intellect and feelings, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls task like eating and breathing, does not contract with age.
Contraction of front and side parts-as cells die off-was seen in some people in their thirties, but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-olds.
Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction-using the head.
The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns."Those with least possibility,"says Matsuzawa,"are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors.White collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however,as possible to have contracting brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant."

13.How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things,so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, they called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken,or written in letters,we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the things they bring up before our minds.Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increase.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style.Above all,the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately,or they make our speech silly and rude.

10.Science flying in the face of gravity
It looked just like another aircraft from the outside. The pilot told his young passengers that it was built in 1964,based on the 707.But appearances were deceptive, and the 13 students from Europe and the USA who boarded the aircraft were in for the flight of their lives.
Inside, the area that normally had seats had become a long white tunnel.Heavily padded from floor to ceiling, there were almost no windows, but lights along the padded walls eerily illuminated(照明)it.Most of the seats had been taken out, apart from a few at the back, where the young scientists quickly took their places with a look of apprehension.
For 12 months, science students from across the continents had competed to win a place on the flight at the invitation of the European Space Agency. The challenge had been to suggest imaginative experiments to be conducted in weightless conditions.
For the next two hours the Boeing's flight resembled that of an enormous bird which had lost its reason, shooting upwards towards the heavens before hurtling towards Earth. The intention was to achieve weightlessness for a few second.
The aircraft took off smoothly enough, but any feelings that I and the young scientists had that we were on anything like a scheduled passenger service were quickly dismissed when the pilot put the plane into a 45-degree climb which lasted around 20 seconds. Then the engines cut out and we became weightless.Everything became confused and left or right,up or down no longer had any meaning. After 10 seconds of free-fall descent the pilot pulled the aircraft out of its nosedive. The return of gravity was less immediate than its loss, but was still sudden enough to ensure that some students came down with a bump.
Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless,a new team conducted its experiment.First it was the Dutch who wanted to discover how it is that cats always land on their feet. Then the German team who conducted a successful experiment on a traditional building method to see if it could be used for building a future space station.
After two hours of going up and down in the plane doing their experiments, most of the students thought it was an unforgettable experience and one they would be keen to repeat.
