Old words are wise words

EDITOR’S note:The works of British essayist(散文家)Sir Francis Bacon(1561-1626)are well-known throughout Chinese high schools.

Nearly 400 years ago in April he breathed his last breath.Today, his essays on friendship, self-love and being young, for example, still remain relevant(相关的)to students throughout the world.

Here, the School Edition presents Sir Bacon’s essay on studying. Some of the words have been simplified.

Studies serve to delight, for ornament(装饰), and for ability.Their chief use for delight, is in private; for ornament, is in conversation; and for ability, is in the judgment of business...To spend too much time in studies is not healthy; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation(矫揉造作); to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the characteristic of a scholar(学究).

Studies perfect nature, and are perfected by experience:for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning(修剪); and studies themselves, give too many general directions in life, they need to be bound(约束)by experiences...

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention...

Reading makes a full man; discussion a ready man(明辨是非的人); and writing an exact man.

And therefore, if a man writes little, he has need for a great memory; if he discusses little, he has need for a ready wit(睿智); and if he reads little, he has need for much cunning(狡黠)to pretend he has more knowledge than he does...

Bowling(球类运动)is good for kidneys(肾); shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like.

So if a man’s wit lacks focus, let him study mathematics. For if his mind starts wandering(走神), even a little, he must go back to the beginning of his problem again. If his wit is not able to find differences, let him study the philosophers; for they are cymini sectores(Latin for “hair-splitters”- people who examine problems very closely). If he is not able to use one thing to prove another, let him study the lawyers’ cases.

So every defect(缺陷)of the mind may have a special remedy(治疗法).

Father Christmas is at risk of serious illness because of his bulging waistline and needs to cut down on the mince pies, doctors warned.

A survey of shopping centre Santas in Scotland revealed an average waist size of 47 inches - seven inches more than is considered safe.

Dr Miles Fisher, consultant physician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary said: "The image of Santa is of a round, jolly person but if you have obesity around your tummy, then it is very bad for you.

"Before, we thought it was just not good to be overweight but now we know that having fat around your middle is particularly bad.

"That fat produces hormones, which have been associated with heart disease and other conditions."

According to health guidelines, having a waist circumference of more than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women is a key indicator of abdominal obesity.

It is associated with a greater risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes. And people who have rounder stomachs, known as "central obesity", are more at risk than people who are merely overweight.

Perhaps Santa should consider cutting back on the sherry as well.

When it comes to friends, people always know this old saying——A friend in need is a friend indeed. The best friend a man has in the world may     him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has       with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good reputation, may         our faith. A man may        the money he has. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are ready to fall on their knees to do us         when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of hatred when         settles its cloud upon our heads. The one         unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never         him, the one that never proves          or distrusted, is his dog.

A man’s dog stands by him in richness and in        , in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the cold wind blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his         side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to         ; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He will guard the sleep of his master         he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he        . When wealth and reputation fall to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journeys through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, a deserted person in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of         him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his         . And when the last         of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is         in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends         their ways, there by the grave will the          dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.
