Flu is a common infection of the nose and throat, and sometimes the lungs. The cause is a virus that passes from one person to another. The virus spreads through the air when an infected person expels air suddenly.

Flu develops after the virus enters a person's nose or mouth. The flu causes muscle pain, sudden high body temperature, breathing problems and weakness. Generally, most people feel better after a week or two. But the flu can kill. It is especially dangerous to the very young, the very old and those with weakened defenses against disease.

Medical experts have recognized for some time that people become infected with flu during the winter months. But they did not really know why until recently.

American researchers say they now know why the flu virus spreads in the winter and not in the summer. They say it is because the virus remains in the air longer when the air is cold and dry.

Researchers in New York carried out twenty experiments with guinea pigs to investigate how the virus spreads. The researchers found the virus spread the most when the temperature was about five degrees Celsius and the humidity was twenty percent. Few of the guinea pigs developed flu as the temperature increased.

The virus stopped spreading completely at thirty degrees Celsius and eighty percent humidity. The researchers also found that the animals spread the virus among themselves nearly two days longer when the temperature was low.

One of the researchers said the study shows that flu virus is more likely to infect people during an outdoor walk on a cold day than in a warm room. He said cold air helps the virus survive in the air and low humidity helps it stay there longer. That is because particles of the virus ride on the extremely small drops of water floating in the air. When the air is very humid, water droplets fall to the ground more quickly.

The researchers say, however, that people should not stay in warm places all the time in cold weather to avoid the flu. They say the best way to prevent the sickness is to get yearly injections of a vaccine that prevents flu.

Life has changed in Mexico City.Streets normally filled with people are empty. One of the most popular professional soccer teams recently played a game in an empty stadium that can seat more than100,000 people. It's swine (猪)flu that has made life in Mexico City grind to a halt (慢慢停了下来).

Seemingly out of nowhere, swine flu has caused confirmed deaths in 12 countries as of April 30.It has sent a wave of alarm around the world.Governments are trying to find ways to prevent further out-breaks.The World Health Organization has raised its swine flu global threat level to five out of six.

People may be familiar with bird flu, but they know little about swine flu.Swine flu is a contagious(传染性) respiratory(呼吸的)disease in pigs.It is caused by a type-A influenza virus.

Humans can also catch swine flu.The virus causes regular outbreaks in pigs, but people usually do not catch it.However, there have been cases of the virus spreading to people, and then from one person to another.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the common flu. They include fever, lethargy (无精打采), lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea(恶心), and vomiting (呕吐).The high proportion of young adults among the deaths is one of several mysteries about this virus. Most of the dead had lung damage. What caused it is not yet known.

The virus spreads the same way the common flu does. When an infected person coughs or sneezes around another person, the latter is put at risk.People can get the disease by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes.

There are medicines to treat swine flu.Doctors suggest using anti - viral drugs. They keep the virus from reproducing inside the body.

And there are vaccines for it now, several everyday steps can also help prevent the spread of the virus: washing hands frequently; avoiding close contact with people who are sick; and avoiding touching surfaces that might have the virus on it.

People may worry that they will get swine flu from eating or preparing pork.In fact, you cannot catch the virus from pork products if they have been properly prepared and cooked.Cooking food at temperatures of 71℃ kills the virus.

Do you have a sore throat, a running nose and a headache? Do you keep coughing and sneezing? If you do, the chances are that you have a cold or perhaps flu---but which one? Although both colds and flu are caused by viruses, they are very different illnesses.

Colds, which usually last about a week, affect the nose most. They commonly cause a running nose and sneezing. Sometimes, they cause a headache, a cough and slightly aching muscles.

Flu is a much more serious illness and is caused by different groups of viruses. People with flu usually get all the symptoms(症状) described above. However, they also get a high fever, a dry cough and much worse aching. Fever is one of the characteristic symptoms of the flu for all ages. The symptoms also last much longer. Sometimes they don’t disappear for at least two weeks.

Flu can be a deadly disease. The elderly(年长的), who are weaker and less healthy than most younger people, can die from flu. This is one reason why old people are advised to have a flu injection(预防针) before the start of winter when flu is most common. This injection is inexpensive and definitely(明显地)worth it.

If you have a cold or flu, you must always deal with used tissues(手巾纸) carefully. Don’t leave dirty tissues on your desk or on the floor. Someone else has to pick these up and viruses could be passed on. And finally, remember to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze! You don’t want to see the small drops of liquids blown(喷) out of your nose and mouth when you sneeze, do you? Disgusting(令人作呕), eh? Now you can understand why it’s a good idea to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze!

In paragraph 4, we learn that ________.

    A. flu injection can cause death            B. most old people die from flu

    C. flu can kill old people easily           D. flu is most common in summer

The H1NI flu outbreak has resulted in the first death outside Mexico today -- a 23-month-old child in Texas.

Three more cases were confirmed in the UK, adding to the two previously disclosed in Scotland.

A 12-year-old girl is among five people in the UK to have contracted HIN1 flu after visiting Mexico, Gordon Brown told the Commons during prime minister's questions.

Two adults -- one from Birmingham and one from London -- are undergoing treatment.

More than 150 people are suspected to have died of the virus in Mexico and the illness has spread around the globe, but news of the first death outside the country where it originated will increase fears that a pandemic (流行病) could develop.

The infant's death from H1NI flu in the US was confirmed by Dr Richard Besser, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He gave no other details about the child.

America has confirmed 65 cases of HIN1 flu, most of them mild, but Besser said more deaths were likely.

"HIN1 Flu is a very serious infection and each virus is unique so it' s hard to know what we' re going to be seeing, but given what we've seen in Mexico we have expected that we would see more severe infections and we would see deaths," he said.

It was unclear if the girl had contracted the illness in Mexico, or been infected in the US.

Confirmation that infected people in two countries are spreading the new disease to their families or contacts n a sustained way would meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) criteria (标准) for declaring a phase five alert on its scale of one to six. It raised the level from three to four on Monday as the virus moved to Europe.

The WHO spokesman Gregory Hard told reporters yesterday, "If we have a confirmation from the United States or Canada, we could move to phase five."

64. How many cases of HINI flu are there in the UK?

A. One.              B. Two.                   C Three              D. Five.

65. According to Dr Richard Besser, why is it hard to predict what things will be like?

A. Because more than 150 people have died of the virus in Mexico.

B. Because H1 N1 flu is a very serious infection and each virus is unique.

C. Because the infections are severe and there will be more deaths.

D. Because the WHO has raised the alert level from three to four.

66. What's the main idea of the news?

A. More cases of H1NI flu were confirmed in the UK.

B. It's hard to deal with the HINI flu.

C. H1NI flu caused death outside Mexico.

D. "The WHO will raise the alert level.
