9.Today,paper-making is a big business. But it is still possible to make paper by hand, since the steps are the same as using big machines.
You should use paper with small amounts of printing.Old envelopes are good for this reason.Colored paper also can be used,as well as small amounts of newspaper.Small pieces of rags or cloth can be added. These should be cut into pieces about five centimeters by five centimeters.
Everything is placed in a container, covered with water and brought to a boil.It is mixed for about two hours with some common chemicals and then allowed to cool. Then it is left until most of the water dries up.The substance left, called pulp(纸浆),can be stored until you are ready to make paper.
When you are ready, the pulp is mixed with water again. Then the pulp is poured into a mold. The mold is made of small squares of wire that hold the shape and thickness of the paper. To help dry the paper, the mold lets the water flow through the small wire squares.
After several more drying steps, the paper is carefully lifted back from the mold.It is now strong enough to be touched.
The paper is smoothed and pressed to remove trapped air.You can use a common electric iron used for pressing clothes.

24.It is suggested that we"should choose paper with small amounts of printing"toA

C.how much water remains                 D.what type of chemicals are used
26.When the paper is lifted from the mold,it is time toA.
A.make it smooth                       B.make it strong
C.decorate it                          D.use an iron
27.The passage is most probably intended toB.
A.introduce the history of paper-making
B.describe the process of paper-making
C.compare the ancient with the modern paper-making
D.argue about the possibility of paper-making by hand.

You should use paper with small amounts of printing.Old envelopes are good for this reason.Colored paper also can be used,as well as small amounts of newspaper.Small pieces of rags or cloth can be added. These should be cut into pieces about five centimeters by five centimeters.可知我们选择少量印刷纸,少量的报纸并将它们剪碎是为了自己手工造纸,故选A.
25.C  推理判断题,根据倒数第二段After several more drying steps, the paper is carefully lifted back from the mold.It is now strong enough to be touched.可知当纸被烘干之后已经足够结实了,由此推知我们造的纸是否足够结实是由水的多少决定的,故选C.
26.A  细节理解题,根据最后一段The paper is smoothed and pressed to remove trapped air.You can use a common electric iron used for pressing clothes.

10.Australian cities can keep their native wildlife-but only if they can kick their habit of urban sprawl (无计划的扩展).That's the finding of a new study by leading Australian environmental researchers Jessica Sushinsky,Professor Hugh Possingham and Dr Richard Fuller of The University of Queensland.
"While urban development usually reduces the number of birds in a city, building more compact (紧凑的) cities and avoiding urban sprawl can slow these reductions greatly,"says lead author Jessica Sushinsky."Compact housing development leaves birds'homes untouched, leading to fewer losses of birds."
The researchers surveyed native and wild birds in Brisbane's urban areas, including living and industrial areas, public parks and gardens, major roadways and airports. They then used statistical modeling to find out what will happen to the birds as the city grows. The first setting was compact growth-where multiple homes are built on land that previously had only one house. The second setting was sprawling growth-a familiar pattern where homes are built here and there beyond the city's current boundaries.
The team's forecasts showed that a much greater diversity of species was lost over 20 years in the sprawling setting compared to the more compact setting."Urban sprawl resulted in the disappearance of many urban-sensitive birds-birds that only live in areas where there is native vegetation (植被),such as parklands and woodlands,"Ms Sushinsky says.
"On the other hand,we found the city with the compact development attracted more birds because it kept more of its parks and green areas."
Now the Queensland Government has adopted the more compact urban growth strategy, which,Dr Richard Fuller says,is good news for Australia's native birds. These birds are environmental specialists-they need a particular environment to do well."While compact development means smaller backyards,it can also make our entire cities more biodiverse,"according to Dr Fuller."The study shows that we should hold on to our green spaces instead of clearing them for sprawling development."
This is the first time science has modeled the effects of different urban growth strategies on birds, the researchers say."Statistical models like these are important because they help us to understand the ecological consequences of a particular decision,"says Dr Fuller.

4.Located in northern Manitoba on the west side of Hudson Bay,Churchill is out in the middle of nowhere.But polar bears like it that way.They spend summers on the tundra (苔原) around Churchill.In the fall,they wait anxiously along the shore of Hudson Bay for the ice to form.Then they go out onto the frozen sea to hunt ringed seals--their favorite food.October and November are the best polar-bear viewing times.From tundra vehicles,visitors to Churchill observe the bears.Some enjoy day trips or stay overnight on large tundra vehicles that have private cabins and eating facilities.Others stay at a wilderness lodge on the bears'migration route to view the vigorous creatures.These lodges can be reached only by air and feature luxury food and living arrangements.
Despite the large number of polar bears that visit Churchill each year,there is growing concern about the animals'future.Because the earth is getting warmer,the ice forms later in the year now and disappears sooner in the spring.As a result,polar bears have less time to hunt for seals.Polar bears can also find smaller animals,bird eggs and berries on land,but this kind of food is not sufficient to support the animals.
Polar bears are also affected by plastic and chemicals that get into the ocean.A research project carried out in northern Europe has found high concentrations of both plastic and chemicals in the tissue of polar bears.These materials and substances can damage the animals'internal organs,especially when the animals are not yet mature.Many people are researching polar bear health.Their goal is to gather the information that is needed to help save these animals.

18.As the proverb goes,man struggles upwards; water flows downwards.Water runs downhill from mountaintops to streams,to rivers and to oceans.But downhill isn't the only way that water moves.A new study measures how water travels from country to country for human consumption.This flow isn't the type we usually think about.These scientists looked at the water used to grow and make the products which get shipped from nation to nation as imports or exports.They call this a flow of"virtual water".
We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap.However,92%of the water used by people goes into growing crops,according to a water researcher Arjen Hoekstra.He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats.These products are shipped around the world.
For example,consider a sugary soft drink.Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170and 310liters of water-about 95% is used to grow and process the ingredients(原料).Another 4% goes into the packaging and labeling.In Hoekstra's calculation,when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroad,it exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.
According to Hoekstra's new report,dry countries like Israel and Kuwait,both in the Middle East,get the majority of their virtual water from other countries,through imported products.More surprisingly,some wetter countries,like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom,also get the majority of their virtual water from other places.That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.
