Winston's preparation begins soon after its birth when it is placed with a foster (代养的) family.The foster family spends a lot of time hugging Winston.This close human contact (接触) is important to help it develop a strong attachment to people.

After six months Winston can put a videotape into the VCR.It can go to the refrigerator,get its owner a drink,and pick up anything that is dropped.It is ready to work in the home of a quadriplegic.

17.Speed-reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age.We skim over articles,e-mails and We Chat to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of a certain text.Surrounded with information from our electronic devices,it would be impossible to cope if we read word by word,line by line.But a new trend calls on people to unplug and enjoy reading slowly,listing benefits beyond the intelligent stimulation.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington,New Zealand,where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smart phones.They sink into comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour.Unlike traditional book clubs,the point of the slow reading club isn't exchanging ideas about a certain book,but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet,relaxed environment.According to the Journal,the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the old-fashioned way of reading before the Internet and smart phones.
Slow readers,such as The Atlantic's Maura Kelly,say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind,improves concentration,reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to sympathize(共鸣,同感).Another study published last year in Science shwed that reading novels helps people understand other's mental states and beliefs,a fundamental skill in building relationships.Yet technology has made us less attentive readers.Screens have changed our reading patterns from the staight and information left-to-right sequence to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information.Reading text punctuated(加标点符号)with links leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text.The Internet may hve made us stupider,says Patrick Kingsley from The Guardian.Because of the Internet,he says,we have become very good at collecting a wide range of interesting news,but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back,reflect,and relate all these facts to each other.
Slow reading means a return to an uninterrupted,straight pattern,in a quiet environment free of distractions.Aim for 30minutes a day,advises Kelly from The Atlantic."You can squeeze in that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments,you pick up a meaningful work of literature,"Kelly said."Reach for your e-reader,if you like.Kindles make books like War and Peace less heavy,not less substantive,and also ensure you'll never lose your place."
24.The book club in Wellington mentioned in Paragraph 2showsA.

7.Evidence of violent storms that destroyed a lost town known as Britain's Atlantis has been uncovered.The finds were uncovered off the coast of Dunwich,Suffolk-a small village which in the 11th Century was one of the largest towns in England.
The town was hit by a series of storms in the 13th and 14th centuries and is now largely below the sea.
Researchers said sediment(沉积物) gathered from the cliffs independently proved the historical record.
"They were like the  south coast storms of 2013,at least once a year for decades,"Professor David Sear,of the University of Southampton said.
The three-year research off Dunwich has been funded by Touching the Tide,a£900,000Heritage Lottery Fund plan to explore the changing Suffolk coast.
A diver used ultrasound(超声波) to  "illuminate"findings on the seabed, and the marshes(沼泽) and eroding cliffs were surveyed.
"It offers a marvelous history of climate change and coastal erosion,"said Prof Sear with regards to the findings.
In the 11th Century,Dunwich was the 10th largest town in England,but now has about 120residents.
Two great storms in 1286and 1326resulted in the loss of its harbour and started its decline.Prof Sear said analysis showed how"people gave up on Dunwich"after 1338,when another great storm choked up the port for good,and food production declined.Sediment gathered from the cliffs,he said,"independently confirmed the sequences of storms recorded in the historical record".
The underwater research has been carried out using acoustic(声学的) imaging technology,and has unearthed a series of buildings.We found the ruins of about four churches and we've also found ruins of what we think was a toll house.We've also found shipwrecks(沉船),which no-one's known before.
A dig in  2015 discovered evidence of Dunwich's prehist origins,as well as evidence it was"a substantial Saxon port, prior to its rapid growth following the Norman invasion".
Bill Jenman,from Touching the Tide,said:"We found loads of pottery,a lot more than we've found before,so sort of High Medieval-the peak of the wealth of Dunwich.We know it was a fairly major town in the Anglo-Saxon period."

B.It still exists with about 120residents.
C.It is still hit by storms every year.

A.shipwrecks unknown before
B.ruins of churches and other buildings
C.the seabed that was like a busy harbour

B.no one believed those ships could have sink at Dunwich
C.Dunwich was a prosperous town before its decline

The next time you go grocery shopping, try speaking to other customers. One summer day, I took a smile and a warm heart into a small store in Oregon and got far more than groceries.

I love fresh produce(农产品) in the store, and not just for the amazing colors provided by summer's bounty (慷慨) or the chance to joy over new choices from other countries. It's also because I just love watching people pick their produce.

The day I was there I found a sale on amazing cherry tomatoes—along with a woman in her late 70s. Despite the fact that we were strangers, we began to discuss apples. She noted a problem with the Pink Ladies. "They tasted like I was eating an unripe green apple from the tree," she said, twisting her face as if still tasting the sour apple.

I wondered if this is something most of my generation can even remember doing. I surely do. I mentioned that I often could not resist the green yet tempting fruit swinging from an apple tree. This was the start for a series of discussions as we shopped-covering such topics as nutrition, new foods and the quality of produce.

By this time a third woman had joined in our conversation. The three of us continued along, unexpected friends, chatting about family size and the troubles a mom might have serving healthful foods that please the whole family.

Eventually we all went our separate ways, but in the dairy(奶制品) section I heard a small voice say, "I finally caught up with you." It was the first woman I'd talked to, extending a bag of apricots(杏) to me. "I don't know if your family will eat these," she added, "but they have a super deal on them."

Again I was brought back to my childhood, when I also ate apricots straight from the tree. My mouth watered at the remembered flavor.

The old lady didn't realize that she'd given me far more than produce. With that offering came a sense of community, a flashback to days when it was OK to talk to a stranger. She brought back memories of summer fruits right from the tree—and a feeling that somehow those apricots were a thank-you for sharing my time with her in a very unlikely place.
