The night of graduation, I was afraid. Two hundred people were sitting out there. I felt tense and I wanted to run away,   1  I couldn’t! After all, my own children were sitting in front of me with many other persons. I couldn’t be a coward(懦夫) before   2 .
When I ended the speech, I was   3  at the cheering. And I never forget the first time I received the cheering in my life.
Flowers arrived   4  my brothers and sister. My husband gave me silk roses. The reporters came with   5  and recorders and lots of questions. There were tears and hugs and congratulations.
Sometimes, I sit down and   6  the tape of my graduation speech. I hear myself say to the audience, “Don’t’ give up your   7  in life. Anything can happen if you believe. It means hard work, but   8  sure that you can do it, with God’s help.”
And then, I remember mother’s   9  to me , a young girl: “Hurry, Gin, you’ll be late for school.”
Yes, Mom, I was late   10  school, but it was sweeter for waiting. I only wish you and Dad could have been there to see your daughter and granddaughter in all their show and speech.

It was just three degrees above zero. “That’s cold,” thought Jane as she got ready to deliver her morning papers. Jane had 50 customers, and on cold mornings when she couldn’t ride her bicycle, it took her more than an hour to make her rounds.
As she collected her papers and put them into a big canvas bag, Jane regretted that she hadn’t finished her math homework the night before. There was still time. She’d hurry with the papers and finish the math before breakfast.
Less than an hour later, Jane was nearly finished. She had only five customers to go. She could then head for home to complete her math while her room fixed breakfast. As she rounded the corner, she saw a car in the middle of the street. It was Mr. Zimmerman, the elder man, who walked with a walking stick. His car was out of gas.
“I’d like to help Mr. Zimmerman,” thought Jane, “but if I do, I won’t have time to do my homework.” She hated to think what Mr. Roberts would say if she hadn’t completed her papers.
“It’s his own fault for running out of gas,” Jane talked to herself. “The station is only a half mile down the street. Surely Mr. Zimmerman can walk that far, even on a cold morning like this --- can’t he? ” As she walked down the street, Jane wondered what to do.

Yesterday I was shopping for a few items(物品).With nothing to do at home, my son, who just left university, was ready to go together with me.

As I pushed the basket towards the register(收银机),I checked my items to see how many I had, thinking I might go to the Express Line(快速通道)where the sign said“Ten items or less”.

I started to go to that line and my son said,“Mon, you have twelve items!”I said,“You know, but they’re close.” He said,“Why are you in such a hurry to get home? You should go to the Regular Line because you have over ten items.”

Knowing he was right. I agreed and then pushed the basket to the next line. So I was waiting for my turn there and I was just removing my items from the basket to pay for them when a young man came up behind me in line with two items.

I just left the Express Line because I had too many and now I really wanted to get finished. Again, my son came up.“Mom, he has only two items and the Express Line is very long now. Won’t you just let him go first?”I agreed, and the young man smiled widely and thanked me several times.

It felt good to be with my son and have him remind me not to live a hurried life. Do what’s right and also be kind. I really take pride in him.
