It is just 50 years since the first climbers got to the top of Mount Qomolangma. In 2003, nearly 600 people from all over the world will try to reach the highest mountain in the world.
As we know, Mount Qomolangma is famous for its height--8,848 metres --in the world, so it has attracted thousands of people to climb. On May 25th, 1953, Edmund Hillary from New Zealand, and Tenzing Noegay from Nepal finally reached the top of Mount Qomolangma. The higher they climb, the more difficulties they will meet. On the way to the top they may lose their lives at any time. It is reported that 175 climbers had to live there for ever. During the past 50 years, more than 10,000 men and women tried to get to the top, but only 1,200 have made their dreams come true. We Chinese climbers first showed our national flag to the world on the top of the mountain in 1960.
Once someone asked why the pioneers never stopped trying to reach the top. “I don't think climbing the highest mountain only means danger or death. It is really a chance to challenge. You can really understand the love of nature and the true meaning of life,” a reporter of CCTV answered.

We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning. This is our first trip to China. All the different smells attract our attention to the local food. We are going to try something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is not expensive but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north.
Sunday, April 27th
We visited the famous Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) which was crowded with visitors from all over the world, and bought a lot of toys for our friends outside the gate of the park. Everything is so colourful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will do the famous foot massage (按摩) and then leave for the Great Wall. We will take the night train north, stay in Beijing for two days, and then catch a bus to the Great Wall.
Wednesday, April 30th
Our trip to the Great Wall was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. People in the village love the quiet life. They are the kindest people I had ever met. High in the mountains, and deep in the forest, lives a lake with many plants and animals in and around her. The plants and animals have enough food and clean water to keep them healthy. The wind carries pure air, and the rain comes down clear and clean.
But recently, Lucy Lake and her friends haven’t been feeling very well. All the plants and animals get together to talk about the problem. “Why are we sick?” “What can we do?” ask all of them. No one has any answers.
Just then two hikers appear. The animals tell them about their problems. “Can you help us?” they ask. “Yes,” one hiker says. “I think it’s because of acid rain.”
“Acid rain comes from chemicals(化学物质) in the air. The pollution comes from factories, cars and trucks.”
“So, although I don’t want to, I help the pollution travel through the air!” says the wind. “And I carry it to the land!” cries the rain.
“If you can help us think of some solutions(解决方法), we will send a message to tell people how to clean up our environment,” one hiker says.
With the help of the plants and animals, the two hikers make a list of ideas for saving Lucy Lake and her friends.
Time passes, and the forest and lake begin to feel a little better.
The next time the hikers climb up the mountains to Lucy Lake, they smile at what they find. “We’re glad things have started to change,” one hiker says. “And we’re glad you helped us make a difference,” says the other.
